21:9 Gaming Thread | That cinematic feel

Surprised there's not been discussion of the scan line issue with the X34 (unless I missed it somehow). Seems to affect everyone model and Acer haven't commented on it at all.

Gah, from what I'm hearing, I'm glad my X34 is running great. I'm wondering if it really is isolated in percentage of issues. Who knows.

Sick thread. I wonder why I never came across this.
I actually have the LG curved 34" 21:9 display. Best decision I ever made. Its amazing when it comes to my workflow and immersive when it comes to gaming. Never going back to a normal display every again.

I actually chronicled my PC build which features the monitor towards the end.

Sick build and nice music too :thumbsup

Replace it! You payed for 100hz. I returned mine because I didn't like the BLB on the first and got a second, everything so far is good.

Yeah seems Amazon takes returns till the 31st of January for holiday purchases so I'll wait a bit to see if the ROG pops up

Hi, do you think gaming at 21:9 34"/1440p will get better in the coming 9 or 12 months ? Like cheaper or way better monitors for the same price ? Same with graphic cards ? I don't know when I should jump to it yet (renewing graphic card and getting another monitor) and 29" or 1080p seem already outdated (even if they are a cheaper option).

So guys. I got this job at a bank and now I have enough money for a new display.

Acer Predator X34, worth it? Or should I wait for something new?

I am hearing a few horror stories/edge cases about how even though the monitor can be overclocked to 100hz for most monitors, but not all. also most do have some imperfection, at almost 13000, that seems really weird.

Very happy with mine so far. G-Sync + 100 Hz is amazing, I already had a 34" ultrawide before moving to this and the upgrade still felt massive due to that alone. I don't know of anything on the immediate horizon that will be better, there is the Asus PG34Q due out early next year but it will use the same panel - should be the same outside of design. I actually prefer the design of the Acer though.

Tried 2 x34 today

1st panel would only 95, at 100 would black screen and not work
2nd panel did 100, but very blurry and bad rainbow effect when at 100

Tomorrow I'll try a third I guess... Pretty crappy quality control for the price

That sucks :( Guess I've been fortunate to not have any major issues with mine. It has a little BLB, but no worse than my LG was in that regard.

Sounds like a 2nd GTX970 to me. Not again please.

Sounds great! Please post your impressions, and if you see the pixels due to the resolution being too small for the screen size.

Sorry, I have not been able to evaluate the Z35 closely due to deadlines at work and Star Wars taking up all my time.

Anyway, a few impressions: The display is massive. Don't assume that it will fit on your desk, because it is quite likely that it won't, especially if you are using a dual display setup. I put my second display away for the time being, but I have ordered appropriate VESA mounts to free up desk space in the future.

"Seeing the pixels" due to low PPI has not been a problem for me, but I don't think I am especially sensitive to that kind of thing. I can see past it even when I am staring at the huge relative size of the pixels on the Oculus Rift DK1 display, so I am not very objective here. That being said, while the size of pixels doesn't bother me, aliasing is very noticeable if you are running the native resolution without anti-aliasing.

You don't need to use expensive MSAA or downsampling, but some form of anti-aliasing seems pretty much obligatory with this display. It is much harder to ignore aliasing artifacts when they are presented in a huge format like this.

My backlight is a bit uneven on a completely dark screen, but this is not noticeable in practice when using the display.

I haven't tried the 200Hz overclock mode or ULMB yet.

That is pretty much it. G-sync works as advertised. It is really immersive to play games on such a huge wide screen, but be aware that you will have to tweak games individually to get good results with 21:9 resolutions more often than not.

Wow had no idea there were 34"s with G-Sync. I'm using my 34UM95 already though, can't be replacing it this quickly. But definitely interested to see where this is going.

The Z35 at 1080 makes me sad.

Hopefully CES will have some excellent stuff to show for 21:9 + GSync.

I am ogling the X34. But I, like many others here, already have the LG34 and I can't see it being worth the upgrade for that price right now. :x

Thanks for taking the time to write your impressions. Do you think that it would take up too much space if I were to replace the 16:9 monitor?

Edit: Got a measuring tape, and it turns out that it would be too much to have two 21:9 monitors :|. I think I am going to wait a bit more to see if someone else comes out with a similar monitor to compete with Acer, and then replace one of the monitors.

So, I grabbed an X34 recently when they came back up hoping it was a new batch with improved QC. However, it arrived with a build date of September. So this is probably one of the first batch right?

Has there even been a second batch? Or am I just being hopeful?
If so, has anyone been lucky enough to get one?
I also noticed that some of the X34s have different box designs (both G-Sync versions, mind you...). Did the new batch come with a new design or something?

The one I ordered from Amazon has an October build date, this is what the box looked like: http://i.imgur.com/1pa6LYy.png?1

Anyway, September isn't from the first batch AFAIK, those would be the August units. Someone from another forum got a September unit with the wake on sleep issue fixed

That is how the boxes looked that I tried... the computer store phoned me they finally got a good one that'll hit 100hz, i'll pick it up tonight

Just get some VESA mounts and place your web/surf display to the side when you are playing (or vice versa). My new setup when all components arrive will be a 40" 16:9 VA (no gsync) and the 35" Z35, both attached to VESA mounts.

Thanks.
So okay, same box I got. I wonder about that other box design though.
How's your October build monitor?

It's great, no major issues really, hits 100 Hz fine and there is only a little bit of BLB near the top left corner. Color and uniformity is as good as the LG it replaced.

I have seen some complaints about coil whine, mine has a slight buzz on a completely white screen but it's not high pitched at all, I have to put my ear up to the monitor to hear it over my case fans.

I have a september build date that I got from Microcenter last week who got their new shipment.

SO far so good, just minimal BLB.

I ended up purchasing a VESA mount for the Benq XL2420G. I have never used one before so, it's more for experimentation. Thanks for the recommendation. I think I am going to wait for a review of the Acer Z35. And speaking of which, I had a few more questions regarding it.

How are the colors when you compare it to an IPS panel? Do you see the screens brightness? Sorry, I don't know how to explain it. When you're in a dark scene, and the dark areas are supposed to be shown as black, but you still see a bit of whiteness in the black color. I think they call it back-light, but I am not sure. How does it compare to the colors produced by an IPS panel?

Have you tried the 200hz feature that the monitor advertises? If so, how is it? Do you notice a degradation in the colors of the monitor while in 200hz? Does the monitor require you to switch from different modes? Such as switching from GSync mode to 200hz mode? Or is there no mode selection at all?

I realize that most of these questions will be answered once TFT Central publishes their review of the monitor, but since you already have it. I figured that I might as well ask you.

Sorry, I lost myself in epic Rust adventures with my new display.

Regarding the first question, the darks are a lot darker than on IPS screens. It is a very noticeable difference, especially in games that use completely dark areas. Actually, Rust has a lot of that (day/night cycle that goes close to pitch black, and dungeons that are completely dark), so I am immediately reaping the benefits of my purchase! Staring at IPS glow like I did with my XB270HU (that I will probably sell soon if I can not find a use for it) is horrible, but it is only really unbearable in games that use completely dark areas.

Regarding the paragraph that I bolded, I haven't really tried that mode yet. It is definitely something you have to activate in the display UI, though. 200Hz refresh rates are not selectable in NVIDIA control panel until you check the overclock option in the display UI. I also think you have to restart your computer (read it somewhere, but not sure if it is true) to see the change in NVIDIA control panel.

It seems 34" is the current max size correct?
At least I couldnt find anything bigger other than that godaweful 50" Philips tv from a few years back.

Currently i have my gaming pc hoocked up to a 40" HDTV because I'm gaming from a couch, and i wouldn't want to sacrifice that for a smaller monitor.

Thanks for answering my questions. It appears that the Gsync function appears to operate in the same manner as my Benq XL2420G. You activate it to switch to Gsync mode, or deactivate it to lower input lag. I will most likely end up purchasing this monitor. Thanks again for the additional information.

Edit: I found a review in Vietnamese: https://youtu.be/vx-SXpZkjsg?t=52 The person goes over everything about the monitor, and tests the various settings in GTA V (But you can't see, or feel the difference).

I have been debating a new monitor in the next month or so. Is this a good time?

I play games on mine and I feel that the image quality is not NEAR what people get around here.

Monitor: Asus VG278H 27-Inch
GPU: GTX680 (x2)

I am ready to drop the money on a X34, but can't find any in stock :(

It is about time to retire this Korean 27" 1440p IPS I bought a while back.

Apologize for the Steam quality images , but I am in legitimate shock that Sonic Adventure 2 plays completely fine in ultrawide. Cutscenes included. No black bars here.

That's cool. Dolphin has some options for ultra wide screen ratio as well. It makes some games super good (Like Xenoblade Chronicles).

In other news, I ended up installing the VESA mount (Ordered the ML10B model). It works quite well, and frees up quite a lot of desk space for other things. I recommend looking into getting one. It's a pretty good upgrade.

I was surprised too however I wish there was a way to turn off the hud for screenshots..

Hi guys I'm in the market for a ultrawide monitor and I'm wondering what are some good 29'' ones. I think 34 might be a bit to big for my setup.

I'm running on only a 970 right now so I'm thinking 1440p is a no go. Although I do plan on upgrading my gpu eventually I'm thinking a new monitor would be more of a significant upgrade at this point. Also If it helps I also use my monitor for consoles too such as my ps4 and wii u so multiple hdmi ports would also be a plus. I'm currently on a 24'' 16:9.

Which monitor is that?

The X4071UHSU-B1 from iiyama. Note that vertical alignment will not be possible with a display of this size with most desktop VESA mounts. I am very happy with my new web/work setup overall, although I have to run in 30hz mode until I invest in some new apple hardware with better output options (my 2012 mac mini failed me ... :( ). I am thinking of buying a skylake intel nuc, using it temporarily, and transforming it into server when I finally get new apple stuff, but I have been over-zealous with mediacenter/server shopping the last couple of years, so it is probably better to just wait.

Did you never get used to more than 60hz? I was eyeing this monitor too for work, but I think I cannot stomach the 60hz. This monitor is also not flicker free and when you use the blue light reducer the backlight starts to flicker, although only noticable on camera. Still, this would cause easier eye fatigue than a monitor with more hz and flicker free. There is also a public display version to this monitor with a steel frame and no feet/stand at all.

Edit: Looking at the link it does say flicker free.. Then I was probably watching a review of the public display version.

Nah, not really necessary for desktop use imo. It depends on what you use your web/work computer for I guess. I mostly read gaf, use office software and some hobby programming. All of these activities work nicely in 60hz for me, and even 30hz is acceptable temporarily atm. I have brightness reduced to about 20% and the display does not seem flickery to me (at 30hz).

Well I went ahead and decided to go with the lg 29um57-p got a good deal, will post updates on my setup tomorrow.

And that was the last transmission we heard from Copper. Go to the Outer Heaven, and find out what happened to Copper, and retrieve the LG 29UM57-P monitor.

There have been reports of color banding issues with the Acer Z35. It turns out that some models are defective, and that could potentially be the reason why it is taking a long time for Acer to release the Z35 models in the US.

Edit: I think it is best to hold off on purchasing a monitor due to display port version 1.3 being right around the corner. We will be seeing 1080p monitors that have refresh rates up to 240hz (And most likely the same for 2560x1080 monitors as well). You can read more about it here: http://www.144hzmonitors.com/other/displayport-1-3-will-support-4k-at-120hz/

I want a Z35 just because I think the resolution will work better for a single 970 - though I want to use it mostly for racing sims which are already running great at 90hz, 2560x1440. I'm guessing it will still be $1k+ when it becomes available again?

The BenQ XR3501 seems even harder to track down, is it still being manufactured? Will keep an eye on the stock checker I guess.
