I don't think you're understanding what he's saying.

21:9 isn't magic. The reason it renders extra on the sides is because of how FOV works. He's saying if you see more horizontally in 21:9, you could also get a game to render the same amount at 16:9 by increasing the FOV. Then you'd see exactly what the 21:9 shows but with added top and bottom.

My bigger question would be what panel you're on. If you are going to get uneven OLED wear I'm not sure it's a great long term choice.

I think 21:9 looks fantastic. I might force a 21:9 res on my 1440p and see how it looks.

Funny how when the Order 1886 come out in 2.40:1 aspect ratio everybody was pissing on it.. 10 years later finally the the world caught up about how amazing it is to play with wider viewing angles..
I think a sequel to The Order 1886 could have been very cool. With them having the opportunity to address all the issues of the first one.

The problem with console game having black bars constantly means I can’t play for too long a session, because OLED is prone to burn in.

it wasn't 2.40:1 it was 16:9 with black bars... at a time where most people had LCD display where black bars meant a grey glow above and below the game's image.

everything that game did was shit, including that. and they only did it to save GPU resources btw... and I bet partially to complete the sheer pretentiousness of the whole shitshow they released

all the issues? so the entire game then. game design, gameplay, story, characters, level design, enemy ai... nothing about it was good

No doubt, the game had a lot going for it.. the lore and the characters had so much potential.. the graphics and attention to detail was surreal… sure the game had some issues but the amount of hate it received was completely not deserved..

Wtf are you talking about? It was absolutely 2.40:1.. or you also say the movies you see on your tv are 16:9 with black bars?

It’s clear you don’t like the game but so much hipérbole in your post make it void of any credibility…

It would be a lot easier to swallow the Order of ultrawide screens was being advertised. An owner myself, I just can't go back to 16:9.

Do you know how FoV works?

If you set your FoV to say 100 degrees, then your horizontal FoV is 100 degrees regardless whether you’re playing in 16:9 or 21:9. All setting it to 21:9 does is chop off the top and bottom.

100% getting one of these to replace my 45” OLED UW 1440p monitor

60 FPS unplayable? Man, your brain must be rendering at 15 FPS
same thing for "30fps is unplayable now".
People get used to new stuff.
I had 120hz eizo crt in 2000. 240hz tn gsync monitor in like 2017.... 144hz ips monitors. now 120hz oled for a few years.
And I don't care. 30, 60, 120 it's all fine. Obviously if you play at 120 for some time, then 60 looks like crap. for 1 evening. if you don't switch back and forth, 60 gets super smooth again no problem.
Honestly the same for 30. after the inital shock, you get used to it

I used to do this all the time on my TV but then I discovered DLDSR, and of course Nvidia doesn't let you use custom resolutions with that selected 🤷‍♂️

It's not about seeing exactly the same pov
It's about cinematic experience

Fluid 21:9 feels like you are playing a cutscene

Using Bravia 9 TV

I do this on my monitor for competitive games. My monitor even has a setting/toggle for 21:9. Works great, having a larger FOV for MP is a game changer. Also less demanding than 4K, which works hand in hand to what I want.

OLED's are amazing in this regard. Its like playing natively on an UW without the downsides of losing vertical screen estate for everything else.

I went from a 4k 34 inch 16:9 165hz monitor to a 5120x1440p 32:9 (penis size small, apparently.) OLED 49 inch 240hz, and it's the greatest screen I've ever used or had.

Playing games that only support 16:9 is no issue for me. I easily get used to the sides being black bars. Plus, there are apps and random people making ultrawide support for a lot of games, and they work perfect for the most part (flawless widescreen being 1).

I actually got sucked into the ultrawide side of things due to the PC port of God of War (1), which let all monitors use ultrawide aspect ratio, but with letterboxing. I thought it looked stunning. (Obviously, on an actual ultrawide, there is no letterboxing)

Those saying "just zoom out" or increase FOV for the same effect in 16:9 must like the most warped fish eye visuals known to man, because it's not the same by any stretch of the imagination.

And to the couple of weirdly insecure people in this thread, relax, enjoy what you use, it's not a competition.

I did quite a bit of RE8 Mercenaries at 2560x1080@180hz on a 27" display. Good fun, but the UI is noticeably smaller thanks to scaling. Does help with framerates on my aged machine, though.

It's definitely an experience that is better experienced on larger displays if you're going to go for it.

Ive been doing this on my CX for years - it really is awesome!

At least with a 16:9 TV - you have the option of forcing 21:9 resolutions and choosing when to use it. With a 21:9 screen, you're always locked in. The 21:9 experience is also much better on a TV compared to a regular monitor, imo.

For consoles and set hardware(Steam deck/portables), for now at least, 60 is the standard that's being fought for.

However, I do see 120fps being a standard in the future thanks to it being a standard in VR.
