Awesome Games Done Quick 2016: January 3rd - 10th.

Oh good, I'm not the only one who thinks the blue shirt guy is being a little too much. Other than that, I've been enjoying the run so far. 200cc is always a good time.
I'd like to know this, too.

She mentioned earlier that at 200cc holding the item behind her can result, when stunned (or whatever you'd call it), in you hitting that item as you speed back up.

I don't think I'm explaining it that well. I've not played the game. I hope that makes sense?

I really hope I'm not too late with my first ever donation. *edit* Looks like they read a newer donation, so mine probably got ignored.

Donated twice and even had a gaf shoutout, didn't get read. If you see how many come in, you have to be lucky to get read

The blue shirt commentator is knowledgeable, but he really needs to let the others talk. He's interrupted the runner more than a few times.

GDQ organizers need to step in in situations like this. Jesus christ
I tried with a $500 donation comment, but they're not even reading many donations because they're talking so much.

My comment was marked as rejected on the site, something like:

"Hoping $500 gets this read on stream. First time donating. Cancer sucks and has affected my family. I think blue shirt commentator means well, but for $500 would he PLEASE stop talking for the rest of the run?"

Meanwhile, "UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH UHHH" got approved?

Thank you for trying bro. They should have read your one.

I'd really prefer if he'd be quiet

not to say the old days when they were happy to break a 10k total were better, but it was always fun when an overexcited go1den would read everything that came in to various 'thons :'(

Stuff I watched:

Super Mario 64 - some brutal fails here but overall very tight run
Super Star Wars - Frankly this was a very boring run to watch. Games with slow horizontal movement really aren't that interesting.
Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse - Great game, very tough, but not a ton of speedrun tech.
Disney's Aladdin - Good playthrough but again didn't find the run very interesting.
The Lion King - TheMexicanRunner is great, one of the best personalities I've seen, super fun.
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HDR - Not bad, and the bonus Sephiroth fight was very tense, but mostly I find the number of tricks in RPGs don't make up for how long and repetitive the runs are.
Fez - Just not an interesting game to speedrun. The jumping tech is cool but most of what's going on is the guy inputting secret password button combinations to get items and then saying "well in the real game you'd solve that puzzle to get that" err okay?
Kero Blaster - Run just seemed OK but I really want to play the game now, and it was cute seeing an empty hall and the people on the couch wrapped in a blanket
Outlast - Excellent run, really really cool glitches involving the player's hitbox and door transitions, was really impressed by this.
Super Mario World 96 Exit - Only caught the tail end, but I liked that people weren't using the same route, and I was amazed to see that the guy who won managed to get 98 exits. It's amazing to see new and cool glitches in a game I've played a thousand times before.
Yoshi's Island - Totally unexpected, well worth the 5 minute watch time.
Lagoon - Fantastic run. Great explanations, great explanation of how stupid the plot is, wonderful glitches, great low level play. Really really impressive.
Lester the Unlikely - The run was good and I appreciate the runner dressing up like the main character but this is a pretty bad game.
Low G Man - For a game in the awful games block, this seemed pretty cool to me.
CV Bloodlines - Great run, great explanations, just a wonderful game. Only a few mistakes in the run, very solid.
CV Symphony of the Night - Solid run, it's interesting to me how thoroughly broken this game is.
Mirror's Edge - Spectacular, truly phenomenal run, loved this
Shadow Complex - I dunno, this was OK. The main sequence break that skips the entire game was cool but other than that not much going on.
Blast Corps - Amazing run, great tech, really made a difficult game look easy, and the cherry on top is the game's lead developer providing running commentary about developing the game. A real treat.
Secret of Mana - Excellent RPG run. Cool and varied tech for breaking the game, great commentary by Yagamoth as he played, also he was playing three characters with two controllers. Really really cool. Well worth the time investment.
SMB1 - Besides the winner, didn't seem like a notably good run.
SMB2 - Seemed like a notably bad run for everyone.
Shovel Knight: Plague Knight - Solid run, makes me want to play the DLC.

He really feels the need to take control of the conversation at every turn. Just about every time I un-mute he's going on about something. Some of it is actually cool to listen too but it's just so much and his ability to cut off others is just too annoying.

I recommend the Mario Maker race (surprisingly great) and the ending of Majora's Mask (fun because of the teamwork and enthusiasm).

Thanks. I was going to skip MM because the overall length just seemed too much, but I'll try to check out the end.

I think it'd be really cool if the organizers put together a best-of blu-ray with great runs from various years. I'm not a live watcher or a die-hard, but I'd love to have some good stuff to put on in the background.

Yeah, it does, haha. Thank you.

Oh, absolutely. I don't think anyone is denying that he understands the game, that's not the problem here.

Man this guy turned obnoxious in less than 5 minutes. Has he really been speaking non-stop for an hour?
Yes, the entire run, including talking over the runner and the other commentator. Multiple donation comments have referenced it but been deleted/ignored, so I guess they think he's fine or don't want to make a scene.

The latter, of course. You don't know if he's gonna have a reaction and make it worse and in this setting, better to not take that gamble.

Wasn't his commentating in Cosmo's WW run pretty terrible as well?

it was during wind Waker, but yeah same exact shit

ahh correct, correct

I understand, it's just frustrating when it's so bad AND a run lasts over an hour. For a 20-minute run whatever, it's over.

Imagine if this guy were sitting in on one of the 3-5 hour runs?

You should have donated 100$ said "If blue guy shuts up I will donate another 400$".

the silver lining is he'll never have that opportunity. they take stock of stuff like this and take it seriously when it's a real problem.

Haha...that amount is small in the grand scheme of things (someone donated $800+ right after me), but as the above poster points out, there's not really anything they can do without being afraid of the person flipping out.

The cool thing about the race is that since they're playing on courses they haven't seen, you get to see them figuring out the courses as they go. The on the fly adaptation really highlights how skilled these players are.

The whole first race was about an hour I think. You probably want to check out the front instead of the back, if you're set on not watching all of it.

Agreed. One team was way ahead towards the back, but the front was pretty awesome.
