Rise of the Tomb Raider coming to PC Steam on January 28

The likelyhood of that happening, while not none, is fairly low.
But I'm all for native SSAA for those with the performance to spare.

It must not be terribly difficult to implement either, is it ? Wonder why it's not more common.
My guess is because of people who likes to enable all the stuff and then complain that a game runs like shit.

I would like to say you are wrong but......

I see that way too often on various boards, even enthusiast ones like Overclock.net or Guru3d. People who genuinely don't get that no high-end features comes for free.

Regarding ROTTR the marketing on the PC version is subtle to say the least. I would not mind some footage with some basic rundown of the various improvements they have made.
Too much to ask I know. Oh, and for those wondering the trailer on the Steam page is no PC footage, it's just xbone trailer with the release date changed. No wonder it looked identical.

I'm disappointed that Nvidia have not been allowed (this is what I'm assuming) to say much about it either.

I am more concerned about the fact that there's still no recommended specs at the store page.

We need to know before release of the game if our 780s/970/s980s and FXs/i5s/i7s can handle the game in 1080p/1440p/4K 60/30 at max settings and by looking at minimum specs we just can't tell if they can.

Sure, maybe the recommended specs haven't been finalised yet, but in that case why add minimum specs which tells us (high-end PC users) absolutely nothing? It's just... weird. Something is wrong here, I just know it. Do we know anything about the review embargo?

Recommended specs never tells You that ...

The Division, which is coming way later in March is doing better on Steam top seller than this game.
Kinda unfortunate to see.
Well, Ubi is heavily pushing the game with trailers, Humble Bundle, interviews etc while we heard basically nothing about ROTR PC except for the Nvidia collab lol

Not surprised by the outcome but it's still weird; considering the game did rather bad on Xbox, why not push it on the other platforms? Unless the "exclusivity" deal prohibits this :|

I've absolute ZERO interest to this "game". It's just another Ubi concept which will be released as a full "game" just like many times before, nothing more. And it boggles my mind that so many people willing to pay for that kind of "games".

Well, they can tell you more than minimum specs that's for sure.

Unless something goes horribly wrong with the port I'm sure those cards will be fine. Also "being able to run at max on X hardware" isn't a very good indicator of a port's quality, because some games add in very high end options for those with the absolute top end rigs but also scale perfectly fine on other hardware.

They don't make any money off of it though. The only things in general that are cross-buy have been some of Sony's games and those have only been on their consoles, not PC.

I'd pay extra $10-$20 to get the other version. It's too good to be true i guess.

I'd say those screenshots are okay but nothing is wowing me. It'll look better in other screenshots.
I think I heard the guy on an IGN stream saying the DLC is going to be on PC with the release on the 28th.

Ahem.

A 970 required for 60fps at high/1080p ?

Surely this must be with higher rendering settings than the xbone.

Those screenshots are gorgeous. Where did they come from?

My 970 should be singing according to that Nvidia guide. High seems to be the sweet spot but like usual, manually tweaking every setting is always better.

I hope by "High" they mean "Ultra with everything ON". Otherwise my 7950 is dead.

"Very high" is not mentioned anywhere so my guess would be that high settings are max settings in this case.

I can't believe a 970 would just about get the job done at 60fps/1080p at xbone settings. So this piece of PR implicitly confirms there will be visual enhancements on the PC side.

I can see a 7870 ghz edition to cut it for 1080p / xbone settings / 60fps.

I hope the game is as smooth as Nvidia claim with their frametimes graphs.

I'd be happy with that, or at least a low frametime to put Ultra @ 30fps.

I wish I had to money so I could play Rise of the Tomb Raider at...

- 4K Resolution
- 60 FPS
- OLED display

The Xbox One version I played last year was kind of shit. Input lag, inconsistent 1080p/900p resolution between gameplay/cut-scenes and a choppy performance.

Well the xbone GPU is significantly worse than your so at worst you will have the same experience (graphics, framerate).
Chances are you will hit 60fps if you stick to the settings used on the bone.

Of course we need to keep in mind that async compute is used on consoles but not on PC because only DX11 is targetted, so there will be some performance left on the table.

That said more horsepower should overcome this easily.

I would be surprised if the game does not scale higher than the xbone version, everything thus far points to a rather taxing game so there must be higher quality rendering settings.

I wonder why nvidia doesn't mention VXAO? I thought they would show it already...

I don't think it has VXAO, at least for the time being:

Yesterday, some press releases (including the one reported by Xbox Wire) mentioned that NVIDIA’s VXAO technology will be featured for the first time in Rise of the Tomb Raider for PC, due on January 28.

This made many wonder about VXAO itself, so we reached out to NVIDIA about getting more specifics. Here’s the reply we got:

VXAO is an unreleased technology which was mistakenly listed in select news releases. We will provide details as soon as they’re available.

As Jasec says, it looks like it's not shipping with the game, or possibly ever.

I don't know how easy it is to implement, I doubt the performance hit on Maxwell would be too great especially if the game makes use of DX11.3.

They do enjoy showing things off in videos or featurettes on their website.

Either that, or it is not there.

I don't think it has VXAO, at least for the time being:

Oh it might be that it's still not ready. Maybe they are still working on it and are planning to release it later with the patch?
I remember reading on some Windows site that it will have this AO technology but they also had 0 info about what it is exactly. I guess it really won't be in the game, one week before the release and nvidia didn't say a word about it, that's it.

Nvidia is still too busy implementing that GeometryWorks Advanced Tessellation to AC Unity, they don't have time for any VXAO implementations on any other games.

Easy, I know. :)

Regardless, it would not be the first time a tech ended up not making the cut. There is a limit as to what Nvidia and Nixxes can achieve.

Going by the 970 recommended for 60fps the PC version should shine already.

Lmao, i think there were some missing features in Arkham Knight too. They announced something and never mentioned it again.

The xb1 version looks pretty exceptional in person, so it is no surprise that this will be one of the best looking games on pc when it's out.

This is the first "AAA" game landing on the Windows Store...really curious to see how it fares haha.

Well Microsoft and Square Enix are doing everything they can to ensure no one knows about it.

I mean, it's not even available for pre-order on the Windows store....
Then there is the lingering question regarding the added value of buying it on MS's walled garden aside from hypothetical Live achievements.
Does not sound too enticing.

Hope my 970 can stay around 40fps @ 1440p. I have a Gsync monitor so I won't see any stuttering, but if it dips below that then I will notice the lower frame rate. If anything, I can just settle for 1080p, though upscaling looks a bit weird on a native 1440p monitor.
