iPhone 6C/7 Mini (4inch screen) to lack 3D touch, include 8MP rear camera & 1.2 front

Has there actually been a really worthwhile application of 3D Touch on the 6S or is it still in the stages of "well this is a new thing you can do".

It seems like it basically occupies the functional space as a long press.
It is useful on the home screen I'd assume where a long press enters edit mode and force touch brings up a menu.

I'd be tempted by this but I've already seen a Plus in person and really don't want to stick with 4" anymore.

Hopefully by the time this comes along, Virgin will have gotten the 64GB Plus back in stock.

Well when pressing harder on the screen more pixels will be touched (by the same finger) and that could probably simulate the 3d touch quite well, it just need support from the software side.

Given how easy tethering is, I personally like having an ultra-portable 4" phone to carry in my pocket. And in situations when I want something bigger to work with, I can bring a tablet or computer with me. But I still like keeping my phone itself small.

Having said that, my interest in this depends on how crippled - by necessity or deliberately - the "5se" ends up being. I like the size of my 5S, but I don't want to choose a phone intentionally stripped of features to market as a low-end budget device.

Ideally, I'd love it if Apple strove create a 4" model as close to their flagship line as possible.

Seriously. I just want them to keep spec-bumping smaller phones. Hell, I wish it were just in the iPod Touch shell.

That might be a bit too thin. The iPod Touch 6G doesn't even have a battery percentage sensor or ambient light sensor. But I'd love a flagship iPhone in the 5S shell. I still find that to be the best looking iPhone.

I'm currently using my 4S (still the best physical design of any phone ever, imo) cause i trashed my 5S a few weeks ago. I refuse to use any phone larger than the 5S, so this is gonna be awesome if they're gonna roll out new 4" models.

But they can leave the colorful design BS behind. I want my sleek black or white casing. And they need to drop that 6/6S design. It's atrocious

I have no idea why anyone would go smaller than 4.7".

I have a 6S. It's far too large for me to use comfortably (I have "medium"-sized hands and pants). My wife has a 5S. It's so much more convenient and comfortable.

If I want a large screen, I'll use an iPad, laptop, or desktop/HTPC.

Why do people keep saying the 7 mini?

Also, why are people surprised by this? Only surprising thing is the 4 inches.

Outside of that, the 5C was basically the iPhone 5 repackaged.

This is the iPhone 6 repackaged.

The 5C was released one year after the 5 and had the same form factor. The "5se" is being released two years after the 6 and has the form factor of a three-year old device. Moreover, the 5/5C was a reasonable processor/memory jump over the 4S. The 6/5se is a marginal processor/internal improvement and has only 1 GB of RAM, despite the other 2015/2016 iPhones having 2 GB or more. That 2 GB of RAM is critical for long-term device support, and the speed differential between the A9 and A7 is easily observable.

The predicted price of $450 is also absurd when the iPhone 5S is going for under $150 and offers comparable performance and features (minus NFC).

A 6S (A9) in a 5c-style (or curved 5S) body would be great, even without 3D Touch, and still reasonable at the rumored price.

Any 4" phone is going to be plastic and colorful. Who knows, they may even get a cobranding deal with Fisher Price.

"but the launch name will likely be the “iPhone 5se"

that

that right there

that right there is where i called bullshit

Dell would call something the 5SE, not Apple

That's cool that Apple is still offering more options for people that are looking for a smaller device. Considering this device will have the same resolution of the iPhone 5S, the A8 is gonna handle it like a breeze.

Yeah. Sixth gen iPod Touch has it and it's great.

Even though the processor will be somewhat left in the dust with all the recent stuff, 14nm finfet, etc, etc. They can still make this slightly future proof by giving it 2 gigs of RAM as opposed to 1. Doubt Apple will do it but we shall see; it'd be a good move.

It would be a mistake for them to repeat decisions like that from the underperforming 5C. Cheap plastic phones doesn't really fit in with their brand. If they can make iPod Touches, Nanos, and Shuffles out of aluminum, they should do the same for the lower-end entry of their still-premium product.

i don't really care for Apple but i liked the iphone 5's design.
Did that headphone-jack-removal thing ever become something? I might consider the 4" phone.

No..because then how could you differentiate between a 3D touch and a fat finger?

I'm sure peek and pop is a neat feature, but probably could have been achieved all the same by, say, a two-finger long press. Most applications of 3D Touch on the iPhone seemingly aren't derived from the technology itself.

That trackpad input was in the iOS9 beta for iPhones. It was removed sometime before the final release. It worked largely the same as it currently does for the iPads. I guess it was another feature they could reserve as 3D Touch exclusive.

both of those are considerably better implemented with 3D Touch. As is cut and paste.

You might be right. I'm still a bit saddened the non-3D Touch version was removed from the iPhone version of iOS 9 once it left beta. It was pretty useful even in that form.

where is my skylake mbp

I'm honestly thinking about just waiting for Kaby Lake this fall instead at this point. Skylake not having full UHD support is a bit of a deal breaker. It (as well as another couple of features) seemed almost deliberatively held back for Kaby Lake, too.

It's weird. Skylake might be really short-lived for Macs.

Anyways, hopefully it's at least a smaller process A8 and/or higher frequency. An A8 could be way overpowered for a 5S screen.

The iPod Touch has the same screen as a 5S, and the 6th gen iPod Touch has an A8, although it's underclocked from the version running the iPhone 6/6+. But the iPod Touch is much thinner than an iPhone 5S, and has a considerably smaller battery too.

Still don't see why people want that tiny of a phone in 2016. Even the normal 6S is too small. No way I ever get anything other than a Plus. The battery life, display, and camera are just unmatched by the smaller phones.

Useless phone.

If this "iPhone 5se" name is legitimate, that's a terrible name, too.

I mean, it's about exactly as bad as "iPhone 3GS" was.

A8 is a dumb decision. Barely even an upgrade over the A7. Doubt it'll even be the 2GB variant from the iPad mini 4.

They could just map the press&hold action and have a 3D-touch-like function for 90% of the functions they are now accomplishing with a real 3D touch. Instead, press and hold is still relegated to icon moving which I use about once a month now that I've already moved everything where I want it to be.

No..because then how could you differentiate between a 3D touch and a fat finger?

The 3d touch would be relative. So first touch can be big or small, but the second one bigger than the first one. You'd lose some accuracy I guess. But that would be a general fat finger problem?

I really don't mind that they are going to roll with the iphone 5 design. We have the macbook and the macbook pro. Why not just ditch the naming schemes and just roll with the iphone pro name line up?

Fuck. I am totally up for going from a 6S Plus to a new mini sized iPhone, something pocketable would be fantastic to with my iPad Pro. But it being called "5SE" is a deal breaker, not even joking

Cant wait to get rid of my 6S for a 4" phone again.
My 5S gave up and i needed a phone fast, got a 6S, was OK at first. But then i just got so tired of continously having to double tap home to use the accessibility feature.

For example, copying a link from one app to safari needs this process
copy link
open safari
double tap home
hold url bar to bring up paste button
double tap home again...
press paste
go

Its just so frustrating to use one handed, my hands are starting to get tired and i have trouble typing when pressing keys on the lft hand side of the keyboard. Constantly hitting the emoji key when trying to swtich to the numebr keyboard. Had enough of it. Want my comfy 4" phone back.

I also notice no difference in speed over my 5S which was on iOS 8 comapred to me 6S on iOS 9.0.1.

I use my phone mainly for browsing the web - just reading mostly, and occasional youtube video, i see no use for bigger screens.

Constantly changing my grip and trying to stretch my thumb makes it so much more likely to drop the phone too. I hate using cases so a phone more prone to being dropped is not needed either.

If it's really a 5se (aka an iPhone 6 in a 4 inch body) then it's trash, while it's an upgrade for everyone wanting a 4 inch phone why would anyone buy a phone of 2 years ago?

I was thinking about getting the newer ipod, but I'll just wait for this instead. I like the size. Also, I prefer the rounded edges because you're less able to break the screen. My ipod 3G is rounded like that and is just fine, yet I drop my 4S once and the screen breaks.

The price could be a good deal lower than 6S as well, so with that and the specs I would certainly buy it

Everybody is forgetting about this:

iPod Touch 2015 model has: A8, M8, 8 megapixel rear and 1.2 megapixel front cameras.

If there is a new small iPhone, it will be the iPod Touch 2015 with phone capability and Touch ID. Nothing more.

This is peaking my interest, if they can get it like that I might jump from my iPhone 5, not a big fan of huge phones.

Frankly i want 6s spec in - 4s/5s form factor..
Only reason Why i have yet to buy a new phone is that i OFTEN use my phone One handed..
I often put it in One of my jeans pocket, or in the shorts pocket when i train..
6s? Like.. Doubt it..
I like apple product, and i'm not even a cheapstake that will cry a river over paying premium, but i like things to fit to my needs..
A mini so called device going for 500 with 5/5s spec, does not please me tbh...
I'd rather have a 6s spec. phone with 4 inch screen for 700-800...
