No story mode at launch? Are they still charging full price at launch? Maybe they should have just gone with a seasons release like Killer Instinct.

I don't mind story mode coming out later down the line. It actually interests me this way. I'm wondering if we will get mini story updates down the line every "season update" or something.

Well, it already looks like there's a hell of a lot more to it than what was in SFIV. Shame it won't be available for release, but maybe the first DLC character or two can play a part.

Yes, there will be a story mode at launch.

We knew there would be a lot of new players who are jumping into the franchise for the very first time, so we wanted to provide a way for everyone to become familiar with the eclectic personalities of each fighter. Each character has his or her own storyline that provides background information on what drives him or her to fight, and what that fighter’s relationships are to the other characters.

Each story has been illustrated by renowned Japanese illustrator Bengus who worked on a variety of Capcom titles in the past. I think you’ll find his colorful, throwback style fits perfectly with the background tales we want to tell about each character. What answers does Ryu seek in his never-ending journey? What happened to Charlie Nash after his apparent demise in Street Fighter Alpha? Who is Necalli and what does he want? Play the Character Stories to find out all these answers and more! Once you complete all of them you’ll be ready for the next part of the story experience, which is…

The FGC would still get it, I'm getting it because I like the game and for the most part couldn't care less about the story mode. The gameplay is THERE, a story mode does not hinder it.
Heck look at GG Xrd, that game's story mode is practically an animated movie.

There are two story modes, actually. I did a write-up about them that just went up in case anybody is curious.

After that, Capcom reiterated that all post-launch content must either be free for players or earn-able with Fight Money. So, with both skill and patience, you’ll be able to unlock everything that comes for the game without paying any extra money.

Did they really say that? All post-launch content? So no only-zenny content?

I'm glad they're putting so much effort into it. This will be a great way to learn each character.

Yessir, even the DLC characters. Every single thing is earnable.

Pretty cool but I would much rather wait until June and pick the game up then since I'm not much of an online multiplayer guy when it comes to fighting games. This is kind of a feature I need in order to justify me purchasing the game.

Ehhhhh, this sort of thing really ought to be included at release for a fully priced game.

Imagine if they did this sort of thing for a game like Halo or Starcraft.

what a ignorant statement. this shit take time and effort. that won't go into the game just because is a full priced game.

"don't believe his lies..."

thats what i thought too lol

this is so dumb, why we have to pay the full game if it is not even completed ?

we dont have to. nobody is holding a gun to your head. dont buy it. simple

SF4 didn't have one. SFV has always been about the competitive side first and it's still a great value for money without the story mode in at launch. But it's up to each individual to decide that for themselves.

The 4 months thing is perfect. Spend most of the pre release dev time to make sure the game is legit, then basically make the first DLC character release with the story mode stuff.

Also, Guile first dlc character?!
Maybe this means more "story events" that will happen through the game's life kinda like League of Legends...

So the main story is coming in June, while the Bengus-drawn stills are for the character-specific stories at launch. I can dig it.

I couldn't care less for the story mode of a fighting game but this late release makes pretty clear that the game was rushed to meet the February deadline and it worries me a little about the game modes that really matter.

EDIT: it looks like the base game already has an story mode. So this is a extra. No problems then, phew.

Upon completing the character stories and other single-player content at launch, Street Fighter V players can earn enough Fight Money to purchase a new character, and possibly more depending on skill level. Capcom is timing the release of the in-game store to coincide with the first post launch content drop in March, giving players plenty of time to accumulate Fight Money through the various single-player modes prior to the store opening. When the game first releases, there will be no downloadable content to purchase using earnable Fight Money or real currency (known as Zenny). The first post launch content for Street Fighter V will be released in March.
