The Xbox as a piece of hardware isn't going to be as important in the future. Are you buying those games on your Windows 10 PC from the Xbox/Windows store (or whatever they call it)? Good, you're the customer Microsoft wants. They will want you as much as they want consumers buying stuff from the XBO.
It's not going to happen overnight, but with (potential) announcements like this and Recore every so often, it's eventually going to be the future of the Xbox brand. Xbox hardware is not valuable to Microsoft anymore.
I think it is, and I also think expanding the platform will help them drive console sales.
Because a strong digital store will mean stronger sales, which means more games, which means more sales, specially in regions where xbone isn't selling so well.
Imagine if all those Japanese Pc games coming to steam would also be released on the windows store and xbox? Of course, it would still not set the world on fire, but then Ms could get sales from either the Pc folk, or people who still want to get a console to play those games (And coming with a deal buy one get two might offset the advantages of getting the Ps4 version instead).
Of course, all that is assuming:
- Ms will try very hard to make all windows store game cross buy and cross play with xbone
- They will see the unified platform as a mean to invest even more in games, they have to become an huge publishing force getting tons of games that you can only play on their platform
- They will allow games and apps to use keyboard and mouse on xbone, so it immediately becomes 100% compatible with any game or app in the windows store, so both windows and console benefits from the union.
