Fire Emblem Fates' localization doesn't have the petting minigame

It's hilarious and really showed the weird anime trope slope Fire Emblem went down in recent years.

All it does is raise affection stats so it isn't too useful but damn me if my girlfriend and I didn't laugh our asses off rubbing peoples faces while they looked absolutely puzzled.

You guys are no fun.

i wouldn't call that anime slope..fire emblem was pretty anime before awakening too..but still it wasn't..that

For the record you can put me into the "found it more weird/hilariously dumb then creepy" camp, not losing sleep over it being cut since I probably would have never used it anyways, but I can understand why some wanted it in even if they wanted it for creepy reasons. Considering the proportion of "now I'm more interested" comments to "cancel preorder fuck censorship" ones NoA made the right choice for this localization.

Wait apparently this mode had most of the voiced dialogue in the game. Maybe Nintendo didn't cut it for creepy reasons but more so for money reasons?

That goes for literally any perceived "minor" content in a game. What, do you suggest that small, rather meaningless mini-games in Japanese developed games should just get erased during the localization process because it's "too much effort for minimal payoff"? There's absolutely an argument for removing this, but that one is weak as hell.

It's cutting corners, but add that this is culturally unacceptable in the west, makes it a no brainer to cut it.

Didn't it just help with raising support levels?

There is one accessory that you can only get though this minigame iirc.

If they cut all these side things out of the game, the only thing people will be left with is the crappy story.

Thank god. I mean I'm glad Fire Emblem is a bit bigger now, which I assume is due to waifu things like this and modernization. But I'm glad its out for the localization.

Is this truly the hill you want to die on

No no! I'm not advocating date rape or trying to say anything controversial! It's a good thing that scene was cut and that this was!

Shouldn't battle mechanics be the way you grow characters? Instead of petting them?

It was a social mechanic. Other games have non-battle mechanics that can influence character growth. They're just less creepy

Weirder than the minigame is people still claiming this is not censorship but localization. This is the new "forced drama", as in localization meaning censorship I like.

As someone who played the JAP version good riddance.
The petting mini game is actually hell for people like me that cannot leave things unchecked.
After every mission you get to do it while hating yourself(rubbing your ds with the stilo just ain't a fun mechanic).
It's awful you guys ain't missing anything.

Considering

A) It was unisex
B) You couldn't touch any "sensitive" areas

I always had a hard time understanding why people cared about this at all. Like usually even if I don't care at all about a thing, I can understand why others might care one way or the other. Here I never understood it. Why does anyone care about this? Why is the default reaction to this being a thing that existed not just "shrug whatever"?

This is my earnest reply: it signals a further slide into relationship weirdness that I wasn't altogether a fan of in Awakenings. If people are legit bummed about this feature being removed, then I'm not here to pour salt into the wounds. But I'm being dead serious here when I say that the removal of this makes me more interested in the title, as the mere existence of this stuff was creepy and off-putting to me. If it stayed then I would have dealt with it. But I'm glad they're making the change here.

Uh, wasn't this kind of important for character stat growth and stuff?

Might have to cancel my SE preorder if they're seriously going to be removing content like that.
Please cancel it so I can buy it in stores next month :(

Joking aside, they'll likely just move those bonuses to a different game system.

Obligatory reminder that it's censoring but not censorship when a game, gasp, undergoes changes under development, and has regional differences. This practice is as old as the industry itself, but mysteriously never seemed to bother anyone until fairly recently.

Yea, well the internet wasn't a thing until recently so now more people know what they're missing. Not much in this case though.

I'm not a fan of them cutting features from the localized version in general but it sounds like it is pretty bad, so I don't know it's probably not a bad thing for it to be cut.

It's cutting corners, but add that this is culturally unacceptable in the west, makes it a no brainer to cut it.

Yeah, but I'm not the developer, I'm the consumer. Whatever makes it easier for them to bring the game over doesn't relate to my consumption of the end product. I don't really care in this situation because the mini-game itself is ridiculous/dumb, but I am inherently opposed to just slicing off content and knowing there is a more "complete" version of the game elsewhere.

What did this petting mechanic actually do for your units in the Japanese version?

Did it affect any stats? Affection level? Etc?

It increased support points between the avatar and the other unit, and doing it with an S support ranking partner could result in gaining access to two special accessories (a swimsuit and something else).

i wouldn't call that anime slope..fire emblem was pretty anime before awakening too..but still it wasn't..that

Once they added in the affinity and marriage they had to go down this road. What else could they do to out anime game trope themselves?

I have the Japanese version too, so I think I'll be fine. It's kinda weird, but didn't think it was THAT weird.

Oh come on, you didn't start laughing your ass of and say '... The hell is this?!'

as i sadi i'm ok with this..but i would have rpeferred them to actually add someone in replacement ..like..i don't know..a minigame where you have to praise your units and have to choose the right words based on their character

Didn't it just help with raising support levels?

That's still kind of important.

This wasn't just an extra silly thing like that stupid matchmaking thing in Awakening. This is an actual function of the game that affects the gameplay. If it was replaced with some other way to affect character growth in the same way, I'd have no problem, but right now, we're getting less content that is not purely cosmetic like the censorship in Xenoblade or even the different conversation for Soleil.

This is not a practice I want to support.
