Kotick: "Our Spider-Man Games Have Sucked For The Last Five Years"

2010 minus five years = 2005. Spiderman 2 was released in 2004.

Phew, I thought I had to somehow bob Kotick on his nose for this. Carry on, good sir.

Game was awesome.
Fixed that one for ya :) Spiderman 2 was pretty good too. 3 could've been just as good but it was as if they spent no time on polishing it because there were tons of bugs.

I dislike Kotick to a considerable degree though. It's cool that he's blunt and honest about his games (admitting the spiderman games suck and that he'd like to charge more for peripherals) but he's far too business minded to make a lot of great games. The few times he does make a great game, he milks it until it is ruined.

They have to use all those boxes for something.

Arkane, I can't thank you enough. Not only did you give me my second favourite game of 2009, but you made lazy developers and publishers realise what superhero games are about.

I agree with most of them but Spider-Man 2 was good
Spiderman 2 was fucking awesome. One of my favourite games of last gen.

I liked USM and Spider-Man 2, but Batman AA has really raised the bar. I'm hoping we start seeing more high quality super-hero/comic book games.

Arkham Asylum aside, it's pretty much the best super-hero game, let alone Spidey game. (Imo anyway)
I preferred Web of Shadows, even though the storytelling was trash, i really dug web slinging based combat they put in there.

EIDOS set the bar very high with Arkham Asylum and the sales reflected its quality. I'm sure Activision recognized this.

This has made me realise, I wish Arkane decided to take a 2 year break from the Batman franchise and make an equally awesome Spiderman game instead. As much as I loved Arkham Asylum, I think they should let our anticipation for a sequel fester until it hits fever pitch come the release of the sequel to Dark Knight, paving the way for Arkane's take on our favourite human spider.

Anyone else remember the list of rumored Spider-Man games in development at Activision that came out last year?

Seems to me that, if Activision is really trying to break Spidey out of the bad games rut, the listed titles might not be that off-base. It's probably wishful thinking....but I would love a well-designed 'Spider-Man Tactics' game.

They weren't all trash, but they weren't brilliant by any means.

Ultimate Spidey was a cool kick-back to the comics and I loved playing as Venom. Web of Shadows had nice combat and Spidey 2 had really good web slinging around town. Mash them all up = win.

If Activision was serious about making a good spider-man game they should take some good elements from their series of spider-man games.

Unlockables from Spiderman on the PS1, even the what if stuff

Web swinging from Spider-man 2

Cell shaded graphics from Ultimate Spider-man

Open world from Spider-man 3.

Now they would just need to work on story, villains and gameplay. I suggest hiring a marvel comics writer who has experience with spider-man.

Well, I enjoyed Ultimate Spidey quite a bit.
Umm....
I beat Web of Shadows. It wasn't terrible I suppose.

They do need to get Spider-Man right though. I thought the web slinging in SM3 was quite good, but it felt a lot worse in WoS. I never even really cared for SM 1 or 2 (PS2 movie games). The PSone games were mint though.

I'd like to see them pull off a great game with Spider-Man.

Edit: Oh and this:
Spider-Man: Gangs of New York (360, PS3, Wii) - Gangs take over the city and Spidey must pit them against each other
has the potential to be AMAZING.
Imagine Spider-Man fighting alongside the Dead Rabbits in Five Points. Brilliant!!!!

Spiderman 2 and Web of shadows are alright by me. The web slinging and combat were alright, it was the horrible missions tag of saving random citizens and doing stupid stuff like that.

But you can't take the city away from a Spiderman game, he needs it for the web slinging to be fun and active, yet because of it's scope and area it brings the game down a tad. It'll be interesting to see what they do

What's disappointing is how much potential the Spider-man property has as a game.

Yet no one has realistically come close to reaching that potential.

Try using the warp tool next time. I'm not saying that dismissively. Try it. It's awesome.

edit: Nevermind that. It's called distort tool.

Bobby Kotick really isn't afraid of stepping toes is he? I quite like his straight talking nature though I can't imagine it helps his public image much.
To be honest I agree with him I have not enjoyed Spiderman in a loooong time had to be said.

Spider-Man 2 was so fun. And Ultimate Spider-Man was pretty good too. Less Tobey Maguire and more silly high school Spider-Man is fine with me. "Crazy silver hottie, threaten my family. I should LET Eddie eat her."

Spider-Man 3, though. Yeah, I don't know what happened there. I'd like to give Web of Shadows a try.

Best thing about Spider-Man 2 is web swinging around Manhattan. He's right about that.

Spider-Man vs. Marvel Zombies (360, PS3, Wii) - Spidey takes on the undead of the Marvel Universe in the future

I'd actually buy that. I mean, the last few Marvel Zombie comics were pretty meh, but I loved the Marvel Zombies Return issue with Spider-Man. :lol

Let's not kid ourselves. If these games had been making big money, as crappy as they are, he wouldn't be saying this. Take a look at the guitar hero games and tell me he cares about quality.

I really enjoyed Friend or Foe :lol

Also Spider-Man 2 was fucking awesome. Why you gotta trash talk it, Kotick? Or are you substituting quality for sales? Hmn?

It's okay, man, you can admit it. We won't be mad. Especially if you put Neversoft back on that train, baby, it can all be okay again, you just have to want it to be okay. Okay?

must be real nice to be the developers of those games, working under some bullshit deadline imposed by activision, doing the best you can, working late hours away from your family, and then having the president of the company say your hard work and effort over the last 5 years has sucked.

Web of Shadows was a pretty competent game. It had fun combat, an original story and some great design.

Too bad the swinging sucked and the VA sucked.

See, there's the thing. Spider-Man 2 was awesome because of the web swinging. :P
