The Witness - Spoiler Thread (plot related/large secrets/no-puzzle solutions)

Huh?

That was just about most favored nation clauses in contract law related to licensing material. Simple as that. They couldn't afford to get a desired Sagan piece because it was both expensive and would have contractually obligated them to pay out more for the other licensed works.

I don't think that's some veiled information about the nature of the in-game project.

Yes, I get that. It just sticks out as I think the only reference in the game to any-kind of funding or contracts, and kind of suggests that it isn't some isolated project or endeavor.

I guess this is what the game is about?

this is the spoiler thread but we cannot talk puzzles?

I heard a loud bolt lock sound after doing a different path for the floor puzzle at the begin area right after 2nd door from start area

it could lead to something?

it is a fairly easy puzzle but the sound is interesting to me in a game that sound is a clue
PLEASE IGNORE THIS IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE A PUZZLE SOLUTION

This is one of the loose ends that was flagged by GDJustin on page 1. Nobody has figured out if it does anything.

Same goes for that set of four floor puzzles in the secret cave... Do floor puzzles just all make loud noises when you solve them for some reason?

oh okay

hope it leads somewhere it is strange to just be there for the
Obelisk piece

Also, can someone detail who each of the theater videos is about?

I went and made the list. But I can't figure out #5 by searching for the text online.

1. Connections, Season 1, Episode 10, narrated by James Burke: "Yesterday, Tomorrow and You" (1978)
2. Richard Feynman Messenger Lectures, Lecture 5: "The Distinction of Past and Future" (1964) / "The Pleasure of Finding Things Out", BBC Horizon interview with Richard Feynman (1981)
3. "Nostalghia", directed by Andrei Tarkovsky (1983)
4. "The Secret of Psalm 46", by Brian Moriarty (2002)
5. ????
6. "Simply Stop Looking", by Gangaji (????)

Just had to say that the giant harpy/bird woman with claw feet sitting near Symmetry scared the crap out of me on my calm boat ride a little bit ago. I'm sure others have found it, but I've never seen it mentioned!

Finally feel comfortable coming in here, at 522 puzzles. Didn't realize I had spent like an entire hour watching/listening to the final video you get from the challenge. I really liked it though.

So on to discussion; aren't the yellow flowers in the lake audio logs from the underground area? If so I think I may be missing some, I'll have to look again, I think I got 4 or 5. Would like to definitely get all of those considering the story they provide.

I don't think I'm gonna go out and get all the +puzzles I'm missing, at least not without a guide. It's just a tedious collectable at this point and not a puzzle or mind-blowing novelty like it first was. But I can't help feeling like getting all of them should do something (despite the game philosophizing to you that this isn't always the case), considering some of the lengths required to get some, like that puzzle mentioned in the opening court yard. Or the one I just embarrassingly missed and will probably never attempt again.

The Witness is a nearly random collection of quotes and clips that he theoretically thought was interesting, except for the final few audio logs in the cave. It's all nonsense.

Wat. I hate quotes but even I could see most of them were trying to help you understand the concept of the island while trying to make you see what process of thinking you should use while solving puzzles.
There is both narrative and help for gameplay in there.

How Stoze said, im not that bother to find the + right now... Im not really good either, but its a little bit tedious... It helos that more or less you know which direcction they are and the shape that you are looking, but I probably do it a lot later.

Maybe the yellow flowers that you are missing are the audios from the credits? You can access to it from your same game, so maybe that count? What happend if you access to the credit from your game? can you remove the house that appear by removing the code? or that it save the file and there is not way back or something?

About the panels on the music challange: is for sure the timer, but it goes with the music, so its not really seconds or anything. Lets say:

TETRIS:SQUARES:DOTS

The right, with the dots, change with the rhythm of the music. every time there is a extra for, until 9 dots on the panel (im not sure until when.. I forgot, but im guessing are 9 spaces for dots)

The middle, the squares, it changes when the dots arrive to the maximum, and then it start again the dots. The squares put a yellow square, and when are all yellow, it change all to blue.

The left, with the tetris pieces, it add one more "block" on a tetris pieces, for every complete... I think blue screen of the middle panel. So if you have two square tetris block, it will be 10 in total (4 for each tetris square).

I havent finish the challenge yet... I almost did it, but I fail on the last column :( :(... I think Im gonna have a rest of it... its getting really frustrating how the random and the lucky depend a lot on how easy is to finish it...

Question: does the puzzles from the challenge count as solved, once you solve it once, or only when you finish the whole challenge and then it incriese your total of puzzles? I cant check it anymore... because Im only missing 1 to solve (i know is random, but probably that column is count as 1) and that mean I have to finish hehehe.

Im asking, becuase I dont know I have 495, so I dont know if I finish I will have 509 or 496... I know where another 11 panels are so Im not sure if Im missing 2 or 16... :S

Turn your head left, the bottom rocks and the water reflection make it look like someone is praying.

damn... I only looked at the lasers and the reflection of them.. damn this game.. my brain can't handle more of these mindtwists, puzzles and hidden stuff..

In one of the audio logs found in the cave, the woman is talking to another woman about her slowly forgetting her experience on the island. After a few exchanges she says something about going back there (to the island) for a "test". I wonder if it's a hint about the cave challenge or something about a NG+.

Also, in the credits ending, on a table in the beginning are 5 sheets of paper with drawings of triangle puzzles that don't exist in the game. It might just be an extra clue to understand how the triangles work tho.

Regarding the flickering lamp, it would be interesting to check if there's a pattern repeating, like some kind of morse message.

I am not sure if this the theme is pro-religion or not

I guess it is about what you believe

the whole thing about belief drives us to do awesome and scary things

anyone notice the erie creepy echo you get from the 4th video, I was awed by the moon eclipse puzzle so played the video again walking back there at a point the sound echoes really howls it scared the shit out of me at 3am lol

The monastery...

Has anyone figured out if there's a reason you can see through the gaps behind the small tree puzzle on to the white monument and see the illustration of the woman and the man?

I tried it this morning first thing when I woke up (dreamt about it...). You can't actually aim it that way, it doesn't hit the panel when you rotate it to this side.

ah that sucks but there is a second viewpoint shifting windows in the second area with the
suitcases and metal detector?

I was thinking from this side?

This viewpoint? http://images.akamai.steamuserconte...115/AB66E5678DE46B64398187014B9B8DB105364768/

Unfortunately that's facing the other way entirely, as you can see.

And I've tried looking at a laser from the mountaintop; they are treated as "solid" and you can't walk through them.

you image does no match the viewpoint in my image which is on the other side of yours

it may still not line up let me go try it before I get some sleep

edit: so close

I remember that place but I was definitely not seeing this room when I switched on the lights :o How did you do that again ?

edit: what different path did you use ?

it is a little different than the original solve but I guess it follows the rules

I was messing with the door trying to fit the path of those papers you see in the lobby of the
hotel

PSN is down did it again and took a video can't share it yet

I think something may work with messing with the paths and the laser will try again after I get some sleep hope more people poke around that place

also would like to turn on the record player but might be too far away

I'm a little confused. I noticed I only have 1 yellow flower open in the lake. I've done the entire cavern section and I'm pretty sure I've opened all the doors to it. I'm wondering if it's a bug, or maybe I'm just missing something.

The yellow flowers are voice recordings as far as I can tell.

I have opened
the secret room in the garden at the beginning of the game
but I haven't finished all the puzzles yet.

Can I
enter the room or
get past it (it blocks the exit to the area) without triggering an ending and resetting my game?

Also, for people asking about the lake, from what I can tell...

The lanterns are
lasers
The fountains are
obelisks
The white flowers are
tape recorders
The yellow flowers are
exits/gates
The leaves are
triangle puzzles
Clams are
video puzzle hexagon solutions

must be freaking out tell me you guys did this I "turned on the lights" with the last puzzle pannel O_o

I also solved the gate door puzzle with a different path

I broke the game

Commenting on this again, I just tried it and I actually saw the second photo everytime I went there, it was from the other window, that's why I didn't recognize it.

That said, I have no idea where this first photo is from. It looks like the final video but with an ingame doorway around it ? Did it happen at the end of the credits ?

it was a glitch I pulled back from the doorway as the video was loading in and the doorframe stayed over the whole video play

Say there is a hidden meta secret and you discover it, how would you convey that to the game given that there is only 1 mode of interaction? It can't be some line you have to draw in the environment because then you could accidentally stumble upon it, so it has to be connected to panel inputs. Maybe you need to start a new game and solve all the puzzles which have multiple solutions in a specific way, somehow the environment around you gives you clues for the correct solution. There are plenty of examples where the panels reflect the things around you, like the bridges in swamp.

You can align the rocks/mountain in the back to form her hair as well

I think you can stumble on stuff like unlock videos by playing with he design before you saw the paper layouts

so maybe other stuff works the same way

thanks and yeah that place is safe to enter after the video you get a Load Game option
chose your file the file saves the puzzles you already did so nothing is lost

Yeah, order of solution is my bet for any meta secrets, given that a bunch of things map to a physical position in the lake.

Nice! Thanks. Really glad I don't have to reload because I think my last save might have been before doing the eclipse video puzzle which, despite the interesting dialogue, is just a little too long.

Yeah but the ultimate secret has to be complex enough so that nobody accidentally finds it, the only way is if you figured it out.

God,the area under the mountain after you get 11 lasers is amazing

I wish they hadn't made it so difficult to find though - I'm sure lots will miss it.

Done a few in that area, and opened a couple of doors back to the outside (one I don't even remember seeing from outside).

Probably going to try to do some more outside puzzles and then come back into the mountain.

Curious how to open the tomb room - unless it just activates by doing all the puzzles outside.

That's what I thought since it seems more consistent. Maybe it's recordings that are underground? I'll look into it a little more.

I'm sure that the yellow flowers correspond to the voice recorders that are actually colored yellow.

...But why are they colored yellow? ARG?

Hmm I could definitely be wrong about the yellow flowers in my first post. I don't remember seeing any yellow tape recorders though, I think I may have seen an orange one once. Wasn't paying attention to that sort of thing at the start of the game :/
