Is there not a term more annoying than Social Justice Warrior?

Anything with stan on the end of it, a.k.a Hillarystans and Berniestans... I'm probably just behind the times, but I hate it.

Never heard of this term but I don't follow any politics hardly. Let alone listen to other people's opinions on the matter. Are these people self proclaimed and just talk about how everyone else should see issues? A title for the people that mean to persuade others? Or what?

I remember being told that the term was originally coined by the tumblr community for people that took their advocacy of a particular issue to an irrational and sometimes abusive extreme, and then the MRA/Gator types adopted the term and started throwing it at anybody that openly supported whatever cause they didn't care for (Feminism, usually). It's just another dumb form of tone policing.

I like it. It's like a reverse dog whistle. You can draw some firm conclusions about anyone who uses that term.

Not really... It's frowned upon on GAF due to being associated with GG, but elsewhere on the internet it's pretty widely used by people not just from the far-right. It's pretty much a par of mainstream internet culture nowadays. Even people like Joe Rogan have used it.

The problem with most terms is that some groups have associated negative stigmas to them that somewhat got accepted by the larger (internet) population.

It rose fast in the ranks to join the likes of "hipster" and "entitled" as words to throw in an argument with somebody you disagree with but can't or won't quite say why.

Yeah, I instantly ignore people who use that term seriously.

Other than that, "cringeworthy" kinda annoys me. Not a big deal, but it's a bit overused IMO.

Joe Rogan, the same person that said "If you're a man and you call yourself a feminist I hope you choke to death on vegan pizza while crying over a lady gaga song" and "Sad white knight men automatically supporting women on all issues are nothing but gender traitors. Know this: The zombies will eat you first"

Yeah. You can.

I don't have any criticism. I'm suggesting that it may not be sensible to dismiss everyone using a term that isn't necessarily sexist, racist or hateful.

Don't you understand? Everyone that isn't educated enough to talk the same way as I do is guilty. And if they're guilty, then I'm right.

Nuance, and legitimately considering other people's opinions and giving them a chance in a conversation, flies directly in the face of that. It is much better to disregard these opinions out of the gate because, odds are, I'm right anyway. It's a win-win! (Unless the person I'm talking to does not have opinions that neatly fit in the categories that I have drawn for them)

The tragedy and the irony is that "social justice warrior" was a term created by feminists and other online activists to criticize members of their movement who hampered the cause through aggressive rhetoric.

Now it's being used by reactionaries to harm the movement.

It describes people who engage in progressive conversations for purposes of moral masturbation and high horse mockery rather than any actual education or real engagement with opposing positions, of which there are very, very many.

Naturally, this is eroded by people who don't have a retort and are looking for cheap character attacks. If you throw it at every progressive, then you don't have to think about anything for yourself or legitimately consider anybody else's opinion. Ironically, this bubble mentality being the thing the term was originally meant to condemn.

This is pretty spot-on.

Yeah. You can.

Jokes, dude.

"Where is this person going with this line of reasoning?... oh wait there it is 'SJW'... Okay yeah, I'm going to back away from this one..."

This is basically the way I have seen it develop.

Pretty sure wherever the term shows up, discussions quickly slide into awfulness. This thread will probably be no different.

Why aren't Men's Rights Activists considered Social Justice Warriors, too?

It's a term that's been co-opted by shitty people but that doesn't really let armchair slacktivists in desperate search of "gotcha" moments or tumblr likes off the hook, either.

I think it's so funny that people use this as an insult. If you're going to make an insult, don't make it something that sounds good to the people you're insulting.

Pretty much. It's basically a honeytrap at this point.

Whoever gets tricked into believing it's an acceptable argument to bring up in an earnest discussion has already lost said discussion. It's like an immediate disqualification from honest debate.

Then again, most of the trolls using the term unironically for its negative connotation aren't interested in fruitful discussion the first place.

Yes i think so, but i never heard of this "social justice warrior" before, is he cool?

(Game's not that great.)

It's also an odd term just because at face value it's the weakest insult imaginable.

Like, shit, a Social Justice Warrior? Damn, I want people to think of me like that.

I'll stick to "unmarried men who masturbate to anime".

Social Injustice Warriors?
Certainly the most accurate descriptors, but, like, from their perspective, aren't they fighting for social justice (for men)?

Hell, it even has he word warrior in it which sounds like some stupid chauvinist thing they'd call themselves like Freeman on the land.

To me, the term describes people who are socially progressive in the understood sense, but push their arguments and point of view in an aggressive and reductive way. I've been hounded and labelled "transphobic" because I wrote on Facebook that the movie Speed Racer was directed by "The Wachowski Brothers", in the context of me literally transcribing the director credits of a few films.

I was told I was denying a trans woman her work, I was told I was transphobic, and I was told that when a trans person tells you that you're transphobic, you just have to be quiet and agree with them, and ask how to be better. In principle I agreed, but in practice I wasn't being transphobic and I was furious at the semi-public flogging I was getting over it.

That, to me, was the work of what could be called "Social Justice Warriors". Verbally bludgeoning someone into deference doesn't teach them a thing.

Despite that incident - shockingly! - I don't now dislike trans people or hate any minorities, and I still consider myself a progressive. I don't support GamerGate, I'm not an MRA, but I have had a bad experience with some "SJW"s. Me saying that doesn't invalidate my position, it doesn't negate all my opinions, we're all just people.

I'm out here on the front lines, fighting for social justice. Shit owns, I've taken out 3 backwards thinking dudes this week alone.

Social Justice Twitter-bullies? Social Justice Tying-the human-rights-courts-up-with-hurt-feelings-losers?

I don't know - I think SJW is the perfect, sarcastic label for someone like steph gurthrie:

http://news.nationalpost.com/news/t...s-twitter-insults-couldve-swayed-court-ruling

This SJW accused a person she didn't agree with with pedophilia.

But, whatever, yeah, it's become an easy insult for people to use.
Are you seriously caping for that piece of shit?
