Is there not a term more annoying than Social Justice Warrior?

It's a term that's been co-opted by shitty people but that doesn't really let armchair slacktivists in desperate search of "gotcha" moments or tumblr likes off the hook, either.

This is true as well. This type of behavior is all over discussion boards.

There are definitely people who fit the bill for that term. I dislike it because far too often it's used to categorically dismiss anyone who speaks on social justice issues. Regardless of their actual argument. Similarly I dislike the sentiment some share in this thread that anyone who does use it should have their argument dismissed.

"Problematic" is a much douchier phrase. So often used to establish an undue sense of importance, and societal urgency, over what truly amounts to a matter of personal taste. Used to be a fine word. Now it's trash.

I don't understand why people dislike "cringe" it describes the feeling of vicarious embarrassment perfectly.

Joe Rogan, the same person that said "If you're a man and you call yourself a feminist I hope you choke to death on vegan pizza while crying over a lady gaga song" and "Sad white knight men automatically supporting women on all issues are nothing but gender traitors. Know this: The zombies will eat you first"

Yeah. You can.

Joe's a comedian and part of his livelihood and persona is channeling a faux-macho character. I think the vegan pizza thing was the clue that it wasn't serious.

I've listened to a number of his podcasts and he alternates between being far-left and being far-right. I think vilifying him based on one stance he never permanently sticks to is a little disingenuous, but to each their own. SJW is a cringey term, but there are some really cringey people out there who wear it like a badge of honor when the term exists for people who take it a little too far (and those people actually do exist). The problem with the term now is that it's been overused and now somehow encapsulates anyone who wants any degree of social justice, which is typically a good thing.

What the heck does "cuck" even mean anyway?

cuckold, or in the sense that "cuck" is usually used, any white male who appears to support social or economic justice or well-being for people who aren't white males. It's a nasty term that comes from a nasty place, kind of like the final form of "white knight."

I agree. It's the most annoying term for people who like... Care about stuff lol. When some people use it in context to add a negative spin on it I just laugh. Sorry that some people want to talk about Social issues in which rightful and true justice is not prevalent in. It's just weird.

Don't you understand? Everyone that isn't educated enough to talk the same way as I do is guilty. And if they're guilty, then I'm right.

Nuance, and legitimately considering other people's opinions and giving them a chance in a conversation, flies directly in the face of that. It is much better to disregard these opinions out of the gate because, odds are, I'm right anyway. It's a win-win! (Unless the person I'm talking to does not have opinions that neatly fit in the categories that I have drawn for them)
I hear what you'r saying. A lot of people don't realize how these terms become utilized by unsavory factions, and continue to use them in a genuine manner. It's always important to look at anything in a contextual, case by case basis.

Recently, however, it's developed into an insult that's used by those who think feminism and other progressive social movements are wrong.

Hard to infer tone, I'm sorry! I have seen people defend him on that before though.

Uh, no need to apologize... I'm sure there's a certain type of male feminist he dislikes, but he's a comedian. It's his job to say outrageous, hyperbolic stuff to make people laugh. And it's not like he's in any way opposed to women's rights, as far as I'm aware.

I get what you're saying, but one should always strive to read and understand everything before reacting. Reading three words and instantly jumping to a conclusion is something that should never, ever, be endorsed.

And no, I can think of many worse terms OP. Racist terms, etc.

The quote below does a good job at explaining why people should completely disregard everything a person who refers to others as SJW. If you cannot argue without referring to the other side as SJW then chances are your opinion isn't going to be significantly different from the others that constantly use the phrase as an insult.

maybe direct your criticism at something other than a nebulous boogeyman

I think it's the warrior part that carries the weight. It speaks of a kind of discourse that certain people opt to engage in. Which is why the term keyboard warrior came first. A sjw would just be someone that lacks serious tact and candor when arguing for a social justice position. Originally it wasn't used to scoff down people with progressive positions, and it still isn't necessarily used that way. Not that it hasn't been misused, but I also question the people that shut their brain off at the mere mention of the word. Best to use it sparingly and well contextualized if at all though.

It's a dumb term because it's so overused. If people used it more sparingly for extreme cases it wouldn't be as terrible. There's a difference between a video game developer making their female characters less sexualized and say someone writing a thinkpiece complaining about the lack of black people in a fictional representation of medieval Poland. Yet the average person that unironically is afraid of le spooky SJW boogeyman will use the word for both instances.

Skeleton Warriors aren't annoying at all! They are the most noble of all skeleton enemies! Why is this even in off-topic, should be on gaming side.

Yes, I know it says essjaydoubleu but quite a bit of people are going to be confused about this. The term itself is supposed to be good, but 4chan does what it is best at; making things perverse and adding negative connotation to it. While I do think the internet has an issue with people creating brigades to tear down people who make "offensive" jokes, the point remains that the internet has issues with women, different races, and other segregating qualities of people. It feels like the corruption of the name comes from efforts on both radical feminists and those who push back on them e.g. radical misogynists, hate-inciters on 4chan, etc. Radical feminists who decry every act as a slight against them due to their gender and radical misogynists who claim to have been wronged by them or have turned bitter due to years of alienation are both to blame, and which started what is a chicken-egg conundrum. Radical feminists are wrong in their beliefs that rape doesn't happen to men or that the justice system for marriage and children does tend to favor wives more than husbands, but are right in their views that society has wronged women for a long time and that they are "owed" equality for it.It's a complex situation that is turning into a massive shitstorm due to prominent extremist voices on both sides.

Yeah Social Justice Warrior is pretty high up there on the annoying term list. Probably #1 or #2 because its so overused.

It's essentially just the sound the spittle makes on a frothing MRA.

Most derogatory terms that are widely used get annoying. A couple years ago the use of 'neckbeard' made this forum pretty insufferable.

It's used now as an ad hominem attack to dismiss the perspectives of anyone who gives even the most remote inkling of a shit about social issues. Fucking trash term used by children in adult bodies to lash out against people who advocate for change.

OT: I think new-age slang is worse.

The whole schtick about the Joe Rogan podcast is that he's putting on all types of guests, even those he outright disagrees with for long form discussion.

It's why he calls it an experience.

Term was twisted to accommodate the anxieties of conservative thought. Much like what seems to be the defining aspect of every conversation about related topics on the internet.

I have to agree that the use of 'cuck' or 'beta', or both of them in combination, is by far the most annoying term going on right now instead of SJW. It is funny I have known the word 'cuck' in terms of a fringe (but growing) off shoot of the swinging lifestyle since the early 2000's. It slightly a strange word and lifestyle choice, but I try to avoid judging people on their sexual kinks (we all have them). That said I was quite shock to hear the word being used to describe liberals or men who support feminist. Now that Trump supporters have attached themselves to using the word it is 100% disgusting.

Hell on Tuesday a highly touted high school football player flipped his commitment from Miami to Tennessee. This led to some Miami fans calling him a beta and cuck, because they thought he wasn't man enough to play for Miami.

It might have meant something a few years ago, but now it just means that you think racism is bad.

I've heard people say it IRL which made it 10x more annoying. They were arguing with someone else and they said it, I wasn't angry but felt this very weird, frustrating feeling combined with Fremdschämen. I just had to get up and leave. Seriously it's just an annoying word, nobody even takes offence to it? If you're going to criticise why use a word that the so called "SJW" doesn't find insulting?

triggered
hugbox
cuck

There's getting to be a lot of jargon that pretty well identifies the kind of person that's using it.
Whenever I read someone using "hugbox", I infer they're either an asshole or someone ignorant and impressible enough to parrot an asshole.

I still don't really get "cuck" though, it looks like a newer and lower frequency version of dumb teenagers using "fag" everywhere honestly.

Pandering by politicians labeling themselves as more "conservative" as if this was a cumulative thing that you can objectively reach. Does it mean more spiteful towards those with less than you? More indignant towards those subjected to racism?

The word "Problematic" is my personal kryptonite

Gotta be one of the most vague terms in use right now.

I hate it as well.

The best definition for "problematic", as it gets tossed around now, I can think of is: "I don't need to explain why thing is bad, provide evidence why thing is bad, or even claim to have a basis for why thing is bad; I have declared its bad, and that declaration is self-proving, and you're problematic if you disagree that thing is bad, which I also don't need to explain etc."

Terrible.

The tragedy and the irony is that "social justice warrior" was a term created by feminists and other online activists to criticize members of their movement who hampered the cause through aggressive rhetoric.

Now it's being used by reactionaries to harm the movement.

Yes, this is pretty much how I saw the term develop on Livejournal a few years ago. It generally referred to people who talked the progressive talk, but were absurdly regressive elsewhere. It usually also floated around people who did this while cultivating these bizarre personality cults where regressive behavior was excused or otherwise minimized by loyal followers.

But then, internet gonna internet.
