Death Grips - Hot Head

I'm feeling a bit of Mr. Bungle in this but I haven't listened to a lot death grips. Is this pretty typical of their sound?

This is actually this is a bit more lurching/stop-start than their typical songs, I'd say. They're always loud and weird, but they typically have pretty catchy hooks and beats underneath all the fuzz. Here's some examples:

Thanks I really enjoy this ""avante garde"" type of music. The comments in the videos kinda make it seem like this is some kind of internet joke band, is that what they are going for here?

The intent wasn't for them to be a joke band, but courtesy of /mu/ and Fantano awarding The Money Store a 10/10, people sort of began making jokes and making them a meme in some senses. That's the reason why Death Grips and Neutral Milk Hotel have become the stereotypical hipster band.

Yep. I'm officially old. I don't get it.

It's an acquired taste imo. Had the same reaction when I first heard Guillotine. I don't think I'll enjoy anything as much as The Money Store though.

Being honest, Death Grips kinda fell of after NLDW. The Money Store had a couple of good tracks but I dunno what they're doing anymore.

Because of theneedledrop and 4chan's /mu/ DG has that reputation but that's not what they are going for

They don't have a consistent genre to inhabit now, but to say they fell off is a bit extreme. Government Plates was a letdown, but The Powers That B was fucking phenomenal. With NOTM being their electronic anarchy with Bjork sampling and Jenny Death being their almost-throwback to punk with elements of electronic experimentation thrown in i.e. it sounds more like "Exmilitary" than anything. With "HotHead" this looks like its going back to NOTM-style songs.

It wasn't their goal but they blew up incredibly fast, so there's sort of a tongue-in-cheek cult around their popularity and they kind of ran with it with ARG-style promotion, etc. They're a legitimately respected band though, critically.

I think there are a lot of people who can't believe anyone would legitimately like the band. There are also a lot of people who might be a bit too excited about DG, and put the band into some hyperbole territory.

Plus MC Ride is basically a screaming hobo. :p

I used to think that the people who replied with praise were on some inside joke. Actually, I still do.

Real talk though, death grips is pretty good. Won't be able to listen to this for a few hours, but i'm kind of excited for bottomless pit.

Listening to it again while I was doing my taxes, it definitely sounds like the stuff they were playing as their pre-show entertainment during their last tour. If those were sketches and this is a finished piece then Death Grips 2.0 is going to get fuckin' WEEEEIIIIIRRRRRDDDD

Hi everyone, Anthony Fantano here, the Internet's Busiest Music Nerd. And it's time for a review of the new Death Grips track, HOT HEAD.

.....

I'm feeling a light 10 to a strong 10, on this thing.

Tran-SITION

Did you give this song a listen? Did you love it? Did you hate it? And what should I review next?

I'm so fucking hyped

Money Store is still my favorite but I've found stuff to like on every album.

I respect Exmilitary a lot though

Flip Exmilitary with Money Store and I'd completely agree. Exmilitary just happens to be the one I can always go back to compared to the rest of their output. Hell, I even think Government Plates has some of my favorite beats they've ever put out.
