Street Fighter V Roster Discussion |Thread 2| Deal with it & place your hope for DLC

You sound very ignorant right now.

Ugh fine... here I go again. I'm not saying it can't happen. I just had hopes that they would add a dark skinned black female character. Elena is the only one right now and she falls into the "dark skin with white hair" anime trope. Sean's sister was a chance for there to be a black girl that looked more natural. I was just disappointed they chose to not do it.

Anybody else that impossible body angle Laura has in that shot? Like, who's lower half is that? Because it's damn sure not hers.

Here's another pic I took that shows the upper-half of the tv. It's hers.

Even if she falls into the anime trope, she's still black. Her hair isn't make her any less so.

Min 6 chars & max 20-25 (my guess)

I hope so I have a idea for a name but it's 20 characters long. As our fighter ID name will be used for however long this game will last until the next Street Fighter. I'd like to have something memorable.

I hope balrogs story is a continuation of his last games

" This shadowloo shit is about to go under. I'm about to steal as much untraceable money and potential money as I possibly can before this shit falls apart, hide out and train some blond kid to box ,b. And there is this Illuminati they got some blond guy who's half blue and red, who even does that?! fuck this shit i'm out. "

That'd be pretty dope. And we'd get a new boxer added to the mix, one with weird powers, to boot.

I hope Capcom never works with Bengus again after his work on SFV. Every time I think I've seen the worst, it gets worse. Then again, somebody at Capcom deserves some blame, too. You gotta be able to say "this is not acceptable."

Yes me too. I'm hoping that xXx_aznpride_420blazeit69_ssj4sephiroth_mtndew_xXx isn't taken

I noticed the Japanese dubbing was superior. It wasn't really made to be in English. I just thought they were enjoyable to watch because they helped you get into the game's world.

I think what's stirring everyone up is that the impression is implied to give off a sense of something happening, but it looks different. It's like drawing someone in the background and just making them look like an ant with crooked arms and legs. This is just a mixture of colors. I've been in rooms where the lighting made my skin look pale and then I've been in rooms that made me look tan or orange. It's just another way of looking at it. Look directly at the sun and it can come off as being white in color (don't do that because it's dangerous), but it isn't always the same color.

I take it your CFN account will be locked to whatever system you create it on? Was hoping to pick it up for ps4 and then pc around a big steam sale.

If I remember correctly they said you'd need to create an account for each platform. I'm assuming it's tied to the PSN/Steam account.

Are you black?

Yes, actually.

I get that people want a more realistic depiction of African Americans/minorities in general in gaming, especially with SF and it's whole host of stereotypes and how they portray them. Balrog, despite how much I love his goofiness, is still a bit much at times. And I'm in agreement with the overall issue.

However, saying Elena doesn't count because of her hairstyle is silly. That wasn't his point, though.

Edit: I'd also refrain from rushing to the "are you black" defense when I'm clearly not against having more black characters or better representations of black characters in video games. At all.

True. But she's not in this game.

I feel you.

The issue with your complaint, not to suggest that there is an issue with wanting more dark skinned characters in games , there isn't. But specifically the issue with your language is suggesting its natural. Are you suggesting lighter skinned black people are less natural than darker ones, because my brother is laura's complexion, and I used to be and after puberty i got a shade or two darker. And not only that I know other black folk, and i'm related to, like my sister, who have straighter hair. And she's way darker than me.

Like you want more dark skinned black or whoever folk in games, as a black man. I'm with ya, but your language suggests that folks not falling under that line of " blackness" aren't natural I think isn't the best way to communicate that. And in other circles pushes the notion that black characters only fall under certain parameters. Which always brings up the " well this character isn't actaually black " arguments held by folks who, not saying this is you by the way, don't want to actually admit they like a black character. Example being Iris from pokemon, a black girl from the only american based regeon in pokemon, who's hair is so thick pokemon actually live in it. People will consistently argue her race, because they don't want her to black, for whatever reason.

Like I said, wanting more diverse looks in games, i'm with you i'm for it. Odds are though, luara is still black, she's just lightskinned. And that's fine. And she is as "natural" ( as natural as a fictional video game character can be ) as say a darker skinned person.

Yeah, FANG name-dropped Balrog but I missed what happened next.

EDIT: Just checked out Balrog's ending in SSF4:

Ed is DEFINITELY the kid from Rog's SSF4 ending. Ed looked much older in Nash's story though. Like he was in mid teens. His voice was deeper too.

Huh.

Didn't see that coming. I thought that was just a one time deal.

Yeah it really took me by surprise. Kind of came out of nowhere. At first I didn't even know they were the same person, but it was only when I was talking to TheSpoiler earlier and checked out Balrog's SSF4 ending did I realise they were the same person. By the looks of it Ed is a part of Shadaloo now.

If I said anything referring to natural, I was probably talking about Elena's white anime hair.

If we find out that Laura is of black heritage (which a lot of people told me she wasn't when I brought this up before, so I don't know where we stand on that as a consensus), that's great and I'm happy for it. I am just always hoping for a character to represent darker skinned black females. It's exceedingly rare.

It just seems any and every time this issue comes up people tell me and others to deal with the fact there aren't too many Black characters with traditionallyAfrican features. We're told to shut up and accept people like Dudley as black even though they look more Indian than Black. We're told we have representation in the games when there's still no one that looks remotely like me in these games.

I ask "are you Black?" because I'm sick of what I'm supposed to think about this subject from non-Blacks.

I also agree with Village and the misuse of the word "natural" but I also agree that I'm sick of being told I should accept that the only Black female character in SF is totally fine representation despite having white hair.

I never once said you had to accept this. I never once said I didn't want diversity between black characters. I never once said that the representation is perfect.

All I said is that despite the anime styled white haired trope, she's still black. Never did I imply that this is the only one we should get and thus we should be happy, nor did I say she was perfect. I just don't think it's fair to completely write off Elena's existence but it's still fine to take issue with her features (or the lack of therefore in some cases).

Try that again.

I'll be the first to jump on white-washing, but in this case, I don't think it's true.

Many of Bengus' story mode drawings have washed out color palettes.

I mean look at Laura, her face is dark, but her arm is bright. There's a random light source on her arm, and everything around it is lit up (including Sean's face).
She has a blue light source on her stomach. I'm not sure you can call this white washing...more like blue-washing.
UriFvkQ.jpg

Nah. He's been white washed.

Blue light source doesn't change the color of the shadows, which should show the skin in its darkest form. The secret is his arm, as well as her thigh, which mixes the shadow with the highlight with her skin tone.

He's been white been white washed. Sad to accept, but if he shows up in V I'm expecting it.

Fine, we can agree that much.

She's afro brazilian and japanese. It's pretty plain to see; she's Sean's sister, they're brown, they have a Japanese last name and there is a fair amount of Japanese people in Brazil (I think Sao Paulo specificallyl but I may be wrong). It's a step in the right direction. She's meant to represent Brazil moreso than black, so her being mixed makes a ton of sense in that context.

Consider when we've had darker characters, and I know I'm preaching to the choir here.. Balrog and Deejay have always felt like giant slaps to the face to me. A step or two removed from Mr Popo imo, and objectively outdated stereotypes. I'm not saying we should be happy the new character doesn't look/act like that, but yeah... we probably should.

Unrelated but anecdotally, why is it the 3 SF characters who don't use arms AND legs to fight are black? lol. Dudley, Balrog, Elena. Capcom why.

Here's the original Bengus art:

She's definitely brown, here.

So, again, I feel the issue with that story mode shot with Sean is the expressive lighting...not a concerted effort to white wash the Matsudas.

It's wise to remember that many Japanese came to Brazil to help white wash the population along with Europeans.

Here's my own Street Fighter character I drew a few years ago. I envisioned her as a Canadian (cuz we don't have any of those either) street brawler. No specific fighting style. Kind of like a female Cody.

That's not how anatomy works :V

That anatomy would actually work. Bengus 2015 -2016 drawing style is just garbage someone needs to pull him aside. The Vega vs Chun and the PS4 plate chun being the worst. I get it if he wants to go in a more stylized direction but its just not working, its not appealing.

Seeing some of the other Bengus drawings in the character stories some of them are really good. It's a real shame so many are sub-par. I feel like Bengus was terribly rushed in order to get them done on time.

Anime stylings tend to screw up a lot of things. Have we ever had a proper redhead in Street Fighter? Viper is the closest I can think of, but I'd swear I've read somewhere that she was Hispanic—which I could totally be wrong on.

White people aren't all blonde Capcom/Japan!

This seems most likely. About how many are there per character?

A thousand times this.

That's why I am only going to use Vega's brown haired alts. I hate that they made him blonde again in this game. I wish his hair was consistent.
SF II - Brown
SF Alpha Series - Blonde
SF IV - Brown
SF V - Blonde
