Why? Because it's the best rap album from start to finish that I've ever heard.

Makaveli don killuminate.
This album has such a undertone of dread it's difficult to separate it from the events that you know are about to happen. 2pac sounds downright evil one minute then turns to love songs about his gun. 2 live and die in la vastly superior version of California love then you get black panther Pac before the album ends just like 2pacs career in a hail of bullets and much too soon. The production is one of a kind and as such sound timeless.

2pac: All eyes on me.
Masterclass in g funk imo. The features are awesome love how 2pac choose such a wide variety of West coast mcs on this not just death row rappers but wu tang and bay area rappers. Has some of the realest lyrics a human has ever uttered and their delivered with such venom and conviction:

'I bet you got it twisted you don't know who to trust
So many playa hating niggaz tryin to sound like us
Say they ready for the funk, but I don't think they knowin
Straight to the depths of hell is where those cowards goin
Well are you still down nigga? Holla when you see me
And let these devils be sorry for the day they finally freed me'

Deltron 3030

I'm not big into rap but I love this album. Del is fucking awesome.

he album's story casts Del in the role of Deltron Zero, a disillusioned mech soldier and interplanetary computer prodigy rebelling against a 31st-century New World Order. In a world where evil oligarchs suppress both human rights and hip-hop, Del fights rap battles against a series of foes, becoming Galactic Rhyme Federation Champion. To celebrate, Del takes a trip back to Earth for a vacation, but is ambushed by his enemies and has his memory wiped, plunging the world back into darkness.

fucking sold

Not enough Jay appreciation in this thread.
(or on this site from threads i've read)

Meh. Reasonable Doubt is a classic and amazing, other than that Black Album, Blueprint, and American Gangster are good and then he has a ton of straight garbage out. His more recent stuff is pathetic.

Wow, some memories from seeing these cd covers. I just wanted to say I'm glad to see Redman posted. IMO he's one of the most under rated rappers born, alive, ever, etc.

Dare iz a Darkside ...great album..

I will post my list later, just wanted to give pros for those not forgetting Redman. I can start my list tho:

Ice Cube - AmeriKKa's Most Wanted, Death Certificate.
2Pac - 2pacolypse Now
Jay Z - The Dynasty
Biggie - Ready to Die, Life After Death
Digital Underground - Sex Packets
Black Sheep - A Wolf's in Sheeps Clothing.

This is just a sample of my list. As for why? Wow....dont even know where to begin. At least for 2Pac's first album, he had some songs, lines that were deep. A line from that album: (not word for word)

You wanna call me a Nigga, go ahead I'm proud to be a Nigga:

Never
Ignorant
Getting
Goals
Accomplished

He became my fav rapper of all time just on that.

I have way too many favorites

but this is one that I've been feeling recently tho

I'm glad to see that more people are interested in Digable Planets. Blowout Comb doesn't get enough love. The last song For Corners is so damn good.

On another note, here's one of my favorite rap albums ever, because lyrics and few albums are as fun to listen to.

The first 4 tracks of Dare iz a Darkside comprise my personal favorite "best beginning of an album ever"...

You mean he has three classics/genre defining, iconic, influential albums (you can maaaaybe argue against TBA but arguing against The Blueprint is impossible), and an album (American Gangster) that I believe is as good as two of said classics and is my second favorite Jay album as well as a litany of other material not on said albums i've listed that put him at the top of the rap game?
Why do you people always say "b-b-but his recent material is trash" when he literally had a an 11 year period of time running the game benchmarked by RD and AG and then continued to run it hen most rappers fall off much earlier than that? He already gave you so much so why hold what happens to just about everyone against him?

There's more I want to type but I wanted to make my own Jay Z thread later on down the line so I won't bother.

I wont argue with that, but I think The Dynasty can give it some go for at least the best 1st song/best intro. The intro shoulda been a whole song...

I'm not sure but I think Darkside had a tight intro or a lil snippit of a song that shoulda been a whole one.

Paid in Full by Eric B and Rakim.
Midnight Marauders by A Tribe Called Quest (well, pretty anything by Tribe, but Marauders has always been my personal favorite since Phief gets more time than on the previous albums).

Everybody has good taste, I'll add at least one I hope.

E.Eternal 1999 - Bone's best album. It doesn't get any better than this. This is also the first cd I ever bought way back when.

The B.Coming - Beanies best album as well, listen to "Look at me now" and "Feel it in the Air" and tell me that wasn't the best album that year.

The Cool - I want this Lupe back, bruh what happened?!

2014 Forest Hill Drive - I kinda see J. Cole cracking under the pressure. I think this is the best he's got, but its good.

400 Degreez - Memories & Fire

The Carter - personally my favorite version of Wayne

American Gangster - Also my favorite version of Jay.

2pac - All eyez on me, 1st album I ever owned. I listened to it over and over.

Dr Dre - The Chronic, the production is insane. Nuthin but a g thang still sounds good 20+ years later.

Not much of a rap fan but Tyler the creators goblin has got to be one of my favorite, got pretty decent themes and has a nice little story of Tyler's decent into madness. Also some of the lines said are pretty memorable. I know a lot of people generally don't like him but it was always funny how people got so upset at some of his lines, they are a bit out there but when you listen, you start to hear the stuff he really wants to talk about. Like radicals for example at first it just seems like a rebel against everything song but within it is something more than that.

This isnt just his recent material, after RD he released in my lifetime vol. 1-3, which are all mediocre i havent even bothered to listen to those albums in like a decade because they were just so plain and unmemorable. I dont even know anybody who likes these albums.

The Blueprint is mad overrated imo, it features such "classic" tracks like Hola Hovito and Jigga that Nigga, gimme a fucking break who bumps that garbage? Girls girls girls yea ok mad classic, Then a weak ass verse on Renegade that Em completely destroys with his own and a somewhat passable diss track that Nas completely murdered him over. Not exactly what i would call "genre defining" but ok. Bunch of filler like most of his albums.

I love American Gangster. Album flows so well together and every track seems to blend in perfectly with the whole concept, the rhyme schemes are also pretty advanced it kind of came out of nowhere after the garbage i was used to hearing from Jay.

He knew how to play the game and become very successful but lets not act like his discography is something it isnt. That whole Roc-a-fella era shit hurts my ears nowadays and has aged horribly.

I forgot to mention an album in my earlier post:

The Psycho Realm - The Psycho Realm

Showdown, confessions of a drug addict, love letters, la conecta...
Amazing stuff!

This one is definitely a favorite of mine. It's stood the test of time by rooting itself in traditional boom-bap style beats while adding just the right amount of eccentricity to keep it from feeling dated. Similarly, Vordul Mega roots the album in very traditional NY raps while Vast Aire provides a more left-field rhyme style. The entire album is a pillar of essential underground hip-hop and seems to be cementing its position as an overall hip-hop classic with each passing year.

K-os: Joyful Rebellion

K-os is such an underrated rapper, probably one of Canada's finest. This album is just a good album with really tight music, slick rhymes, and enough appeal to hit the mainstream market. I always think of my high school years everytime I listen to this album and the dude's discography is solid throughout. (See: Yes! and atlantis: hymns of disco)

Really hoped that there was an alternate universe that this guy became the big canadian rapper instead of drake but one can dream.

Always nice to see what people think is great hip hop music. Makes me happy to see Digable Planets, Redman, Black Sheep and especially O.C get mentions. Here's some of my favourites in no particular order (too difficult for me to rate them):

The Sun Rises in the East by Jeru the Damaja
Probably my favourite rapper, both this album and its sequel Wrath of the Math is worth a listen. You can't stop the prophet.

Hard to Earn by Gang Starr
Learned of Jeru through Gang Starrs incredible music. RIP Guru.

Follow the Leader by Eric B and Rakim

Back to the Old School by Just-Ice
Kind of funny that he calls it back to the old school when the album was released in 1987. First rapper to refer to himself as a gangster on wax.

LOL weak ass verse? No one got killed on that track, both verses from jay and em were incredible. People just continue to say that cuz of what Nas said... and speaking of ether, try listening to it now and compare it to takeover and tell me which one you actually prefer listening to in 2016. The blueprint is Jay's second best album and the only weak songs were the girls, girls, girls tracks, everything else is pretty much great.
