I kinda worry about the same thing. I would very much like to avoid a "Dark Age of Comics" situation.

Deadpool is going to make gratuitous cameos in films (will probably be the main character) in the same way Deadpool/Wolverine/spider-man did in comics in the 90s.

I'm fucking dying at a Deadpool movie getting a 150 million dollar opening

Like, what the fuck

They basically doubled estimates

It is kind of crazy. He's an obscure side character that seemingly has an acquired taste. He's not an every man character like Wolverine or Captain America where even if you maybe dont like them, you can still tolerate them.

It shows advertising(in the right way) does work at least.

So... what are the chances that this becomes Fox' best performing comic book movie?

It will probably earn more than DoFP in the US, but big question is international market. DoFP earned more than half a billion outside of US. I don't know if Deadpool can reach that, especially without China.

the film pretty much nails the dominant aesethic in hollywood at the moment - star wars:tfa, iron man, guardians of the Galaxy et al. this is more vulgar and violent which gives them their unique selling point but the tone feels the same to me. loads and loads of ironic, self aware jokes constantly undercutting a quickly paced mashup of action setpieces and generic but sincerely played emotional character arcs.

it very teenage boy though - the flavour of the jokes, the casual boring sexism - so it's impressive it's doing nearly as well as the disney stuff which is more carefully balanced but i guess ryan reynolds romcom star helps.

DofP earned more than 100 million in China. It's going to be hard for Deadpool to make that up, but it could be possible if its domestic legs are insane. DofP only made 233 million domestically.

Deadpool isn't exactly obscure.

Deadpool with the same legs as Watchmen would make $263M domesetic.

Deadpool with the same legs as X-Men Origins: Wolverine would make $285M domestic.

Deadpool with the same legs as Man of Steel would make $305M domestic.

Deadpool with the same legs as Age of Ultron would make $324M domestic.

Deadpool with the same legs as Days of Future Past would make $348M domestic.

Deadpool with the same legs as The Winter Soldier would make $369M domestic.

Deadpool with the same legs as Ant-Man would make $425M domestic.

Deadpool with the same legs as Guardians of the Galaxy would make $477M domestic.

I think that gives us an idea of the possible range for Deadpool's domestic total. With a $135M opening, less than $250M is impossible, and less than $300M is improbable unless the film was a one weekend wonder.

If I had to guess right now, I'd say that somewhere between $325-375M domestic is a likely endpoint, but we could see the film get higher than that if holds are good in light of weak competition in coming weeks. The Passion of the Christ still holds the Rated-R domestic record at around $380M. American Sniper is the only other R-rated film to ever break $300M domestic.

They should totally do a buddy cop type movie with Deadpool and Wolverine

Deadpool and Wolverine Kills Gambit

would be a sure fire hit.

This seriously might be the most amazing box office story I've ever seen.

The fact it's happening to a film that was stuck in purgatory for 10+ years because nobody believed it could be profitable only makes it better.
Yeah this is just crazy. I thought an 80 -90 million opening weekend was impossible enough and yet this happens.

I honestly can't believe a Deadpool movie has grossed enough to even be in a discussion with Passion of the Christ. Goddamn. Really just goes to show that studio execs often have no fucking clue what audiences want.

Deadpool has been extremely popular the last decade amongst younger people, I always thought people were underestimating how well this film would do. That being said, it's doing soooooo much better than I expected.

I dunno it was a fresh take on the superhero genre and by all accounts is a great movie and it was released in a period of the year that is normally dead for action movies so it draws in that crown as well. It shouldn't be that surprising that Deadpool was successful, but possibly being the highest grossing R of all time is bonkers.

I saw it twice!! Loved it!

'Deadpool' kills with record $135M weekend

Time to crack open the celebratory boxed white wine for Ryan Reynolds in Marvel's Deadpool, which soared to a head-turning, historic opening weekend at the box office with $135 million, according to studio estimates.

The R-rated Marvel superhero movie featuring Reynolds as the foul-mouthed, irreverent Deadpool set a slew of new records — the biggest R-rated opening (beating 2003's The Matrix Reloaded with $91.8 million) the biggest February weekend and President's Day holiday weekend (beating 2015's Fifty Shades of Grey at $85.2 million for both).

Deadpool is expected to take an overwhelming $150 million over the complete four-day holiday weekend.

Deadpool isn't exactly obscure.
In the larger media context, I would say he's obscure. The number of people who actually read comics on a regular basis is tiny, and he's had no truly significant exposure in other media prior to this movie.

The movie will have almost tripled its budget by the end of Monday in the domestic market alone, which is astounding.

I hope the bluray had a documentary on how this movie came into existence. I need to tell this to my grand children.

Watched it today in the cinema. As usual, all the sex and nudity was cut out, but everything else, including the violence, references and dick and pussy jokes were intact. Loved the movie and can't wait to watch it properly on bluray!

What country do you live in?

This is my favorite thing about this whole story. This movie wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for the leaked footage and the outcry of the internet saying that people want it. That they throw a pittance of a budget(comparatively with the genre) and it makes back almost all of that budget on opening day is HILARIOUS.

Not just opening day, but opening Weekend it is past the 2.5x times needed for it to recoup its budget. It is profitable from the first weekend. Just domestically. Everything else it pulls in from this day is pure profit.

The marketing for this movie was brilliant and the thirst for a good deadpool movie was real. And Ryan always had it in him. Really happy about the success of this movie.

Awkward cut in the first scene, and the second scene was completely seemless without any nudity. Yeah, I dunno how.

Actually noticed a moment when they could have cleanly cut to a moment without nudity. I felt like it was there so it could be in TV one day or something, I guess now I know lol.

I think it's bloody hilarious how Tom Rothman, the man who literally had Deadpool's mouth sewn shut (He referred to the Origins version of the character as A+++ even!), and refused to make the movie while he was at Fox, is now the chairman of Sony Pictures.

I want a comment from him. He personally blocked the film, and now the studio made it, they made it R-Rated and it's blowing the box office the fuck up. In any case, Kevin Smith is damn right about one thing. Hollywood IS about failing upwards.

I'd love to see Ryans initial reaction to reading these numbers. He probably feels like his whole career has been justified with this.

I remember right before it came out some guy was saying Zoolander 2 would be way bigger.

Hehe.

Weird thing is i was looking more forward to deadpool than zoolander 2 like most reviews saying it was 15 years too late but also the marketing has been fantastic with deadpool hitting everything on the right notes.

Not only that he intervened with a lot more movies he is scum take a look at other botched movies it is all because of him.

All I gots to say is HELL FUCKING YEA BABY!!!!!!!!!! Fox doubted this movie. A lot of people doubted this movie. I always had fucking faith. This shows that if you are a true fan of the material and you don't have the studio all over your ass you will probably make something great. It also shows you that ratings be damned a good movie is going to make money.

Yowers, impressive stuff to be sure. I seriously doubt this will lead to anymore R rated action films never mind superhero films given that studios will probably learn nothing from this. I imagine they all notch this up to an 'anomaly' and nothing more.

Also before this opened I was asking what would happen is Deadpool outgrossed X-Men Apocalypse in the US because I had heard before Xmas that perhaps Fox weren't that confident in Singer's latest X adventure.

This incredible performance could totally blow apart Fox's plans for their X universe which already seems more interesting to me than what they planned.

impressive as always man, out of curiousity what would Deadpool's total be if it totally imploded? Though it looks solid enough what if it happens to be totally front loaded?

What would its domestic total be if had Cloverfield's legs?

Total insanity. Between this and Force Awakens my abysmal record of predicting box office performance continues at pace.

Credit to Fox's marketing team who really managed to connect with the target audience and expand beyond it in a big way.
