Deadpool shatters record with $47.5M opening day

Watched this last night on a whim even though the trailers had me worried. Fun film, but what surprised me is that we went to our local shitty cinema (the nicer ones weren't showing Deadpool) and it was almost sold out apart from the nosebleed seats. I can't remember the last time I saw the cinema like this, not even The Winter Soldier or Spectre's opening weekend was this busy. This is in London, so I'm really interested in what Deadpool's international numbers are like.

re: Deadpool x Wolverine - would love to see this movie as it's probably the only time we'd ever get to see (on the big screen) the real carnage Wolverine's claws could do.

So basically there is no slow month anymore in regards to boxoffice.

September and October still have pretty shitty track records. Especially September.

Deadpools first 4 days are equivalent to a third or fourth highest total gross of all time in September. Hotel Transylvania 2 is the top Sep film ever with less than $50m first weekend and less than 170M ltd.

I hope Ryan Renolds didn't have plans for the rest of his career. And I hope Blur Studios is looking for a new director.

I'm pretty sure Reynolds is dancing in the street right now. Either him or Miller leaked that damn footage and it paid off for them in the best way.

Miller was gone the second he got a shot at a big movie.

They need to get a video of Ryan Renolds in a Deadpool suit, wearing golden chains, rings and neck watch, telling people to go watch the movie again.

People will go.

I still can't believe we live in an era where Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool movies exist, let alone be successful.

Pretty damn likely.

On about a fourth of the budget.

Jesus.

To be fair, Deadpool isn't as obscure as the Guardians were. But then you could factor in the R rating of his film as a reason for analysts being skeptical. I'm glad that Deadpool's movie ended up being awesome enough to bring people into the theaters in droves.

Anyway, apparently Fox's biggest opening weekend before Deadpool for a Marvel property was X-Men: The Last Stand with $102 million (not sure if this is adjusted for inflation).

I turned my nose up at this movie and all the trailers. But word of mouth and box office performance has convinced me that I should go and see it. For the record I haven't seen a single X-Men universe movie in the cinema so this movie has marketed itself very well for me to be interested.

Lol, fucking hell
Saves his bullets, gets all the money

Given studio/exhibitor splits, Deadpool's 3-day opening will already be enough to pay back the entire production budget. Throw in Monday's gross and overseas, and they will probably be in the black for both Marketing and Production in 4-days. This will be one of the most profitable films of the year.

Pretty damn likely.

I fully expect Deadpool to become Fox's biggest comic film domestically, but Worldwide will be much harder. China won't be releasing the film, and Days of Future Past made $115M there.

And that's the magic trick. Look at the most successful comic films and this is usually a key factor.
I hope that's the lesson learned from this and Marvel's success, but we know it won't be.

Going by the dark and edgy Power Rangers news, we know Lionsgate sure hasn't.

Even better. Fox's biggest opening weekend ever was Star Wars RotS with $108m and Deadpool is going to crush that. Absolutely crazy numbers.

My screening in London last night at a Cineworld was nearly full. Just a few seats at the very front were empty. Star Wars had less people (although my screening was earlier in the day) and Spectre/Hunger Games were nearly empty.

This is bonkers. Last week I was reading $65m for the whole weekend and I thought that was great for this movie.

$150 is insanity.

This seriously might be the most amazing box office story I've ever seen.

The fact it's happening to a film that was stuck in purgatory for 10+ years because nobody believed it could be profitable only makes it better.

This is my favorite thing about this whole story. This movie wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for the leaked footage and the outcry of the internet saying that people want it. That they throw a pittance of a budget(comparatively with the genre) and it makes back almost all of that budget on opening day is HILARIOUS.
