I'd be surprised if the game goes over 8 and under 6 in terms of reviews. I think it'll be higher than SF4, seeing as there are some genuine improvments, but the lack of content for casuals will hurt it. The only pluses I can see picking up after the negatives is the fact that there'll be updates very soon. Even then though, review day is going to be rough.
If that were the case then you'd be paying 10$ on March first and another 10$ in June to get the features still in the oven. That still adds up to 60$. Since this game is also a service there will never be a time where it's not evolving in some way.
If it bugs you that much though, buy it at the end of the year instead, the rest of us will play it for 10 moths and get our 60$ worth.
Since I played the beta and I'm not a concern troll I don't need a review score to tell me I'll like the game. When have fighting game reviews in all of history been anything but arbitrary bullshit?
a gaffer from earlier basing it on steam unlock time, though not a unreasonbale guess for the proper server wipe time. if it wipes at midnight pst instead, game would still be out for 6 hours here
The Story Costumes are supposed to be Rewards for completing their hilariously brief still animations. But instead, they convoluted the process by not only making you buy them, but having to wait a month to buy them.
That's still fine if not for the "waiting a month to buy them" part. Having to pay for things (even if you only get the ability to do so after meeting certain conditions) is pretty standard across all genres.

Just because Steam unlocks the game then doesn't mean they'll wipe the servers then. It'd be moronic to wipe the servers when half the world has been playing for several hours. They'll probably wipe it one final time on Monday.

You don't have to pay for the Colors, though. Inconsistent Design. Also, since you have to use Fight Money to buy those costumes, it gets in the way of buying characters/stages.
I honestly don't care if early buyers gets ahead and earns FM etc before me but I guess the "fair play" is how Capcom is thinking since they're resetting it.

Having to pay for some things but not others is also standard across all genres 😁 Colors are the free ones because they're less interesting, like how you get the handguns for beating Bayonetta but have to pay for the cooler NG+ weapons.
And that's the point of fight money lol. If you don't want stuff to get in the way of characters, use Zenny. But then again, that's also used for premium costumes D:
Street Fighter V being constantly updated would mean launch day reviews will be pointless anyway. Not like fighting game reviews have ever been good mind.
I expect it to review 80s. Just because it has no modes doesn't mean it will be reviewed poorly. It has the good gameplay.

It matters to your average reader, though. Release day gets the most eyes on the game. It's tough to change a first impression.
You also have to keep the gaming press in mind. They'll jump in the "single player" first, they care about that stuff. And there won't be much there for them.

I think the need for tutorial type shit is hugely overstated when you look at the most played competitive games out there. MOBAs have way more convoluted systems, terrible tutorials/offline/single player options and are still the most popular multiplayer games out there. I'm always dubious of people stating they want to get into fighters when they can't be arsed to spend 30 minutes online looking at how to play a game/character.
All in all I don't think the biggest barrier to appealing to a wider audience is tutorials/single player content, but the fact that it's not a team based experience which isn't going to change.

MOBAs are starting to add tutorials now though because of the barrier to entry that they have. Dota 2 has a tutorial now and most of the newer moba likes that are in beta/coming out soon also have them. Companies realized that they need to have some sort of tutorial or new players will be scared to start playing.
SF4 came out to a huge nostalgia wave for the series, and was released before Capcom managed to shit the bed with (U)MvC3 and SFxT. There's also been three NRS games that have been released since that probably have moved expectations for content to ship with a single player game. There's also the trend of games being rated slightly more harshly now than in the past.
(Looking back, SF4 averaging a 94 is a travashamockery.)
I personally expect SF5 to end up in the high 70s/low 80s, and that's assuming that the online functionality holds up. If the servers shit the bed at launch, all bets are off.

The tutorial for LoL is a joke and does nothing to prevent players from getting completely dumped on by the community when they start playing.
And frankly, I don't think it makes much sense. My experience with seeing people go through even remotely involved tutorials for fighting games is that it's a net negative. People are exposed to all of the mechanics and possibilities, they get overwhelmed and they run for the hills. That and honestly, the content the community is going to create is going to be far more involved than what a single company could crank out themselves. That and if the game gets big enough, said content could then bring in enough CPM to encourage people to create more content, which then creates a positive feedback loop -- for the life of the game, anyway.
I think the bigger issue is that it's hard to create something for a fighting game that can be digested in a few minutes without feeling superficial. It takes about 10-15 minutes to go over a new hero in a MOBA (covering their skills, how they should be used, build orders, etc.). Whereas with a fighting game you can have tutorials for a character that go on for hours and still feel like they're missing things.

BTW, SF5 has more in-depth tutorial materials coming in March.
From what they described, these will actually be done on a per character basis. Most other games don't do that (because that would take a crap load of time to create).
I think it's pretty shitty that if you're playing an Offline Mode you're kicked back to the Main Menu. Like...imagine getting to Wave 99 on Survival Hell and then a disconnect happens. You have to start over from scratch.
A bit off topic, but the latest episode of Excellent Adventures is their final show featuring SF4 and its pretty damn entertaining. Smug is the guest, and they are going off of an undefeated streak from the previous show. My heart was in my throat half way through lol
I hope they get Jason on the Bombcast this week to also talk about it... he's a little more in tune with the FGC than Jeff. Sad GT died just a week short... would have loved to hear what Kyle has to say. In fact the final Final Bosman was them doing a SFV parody commercial. Ben also had just bought a fightstick and they were already filming segments when they were told they're fired.
If people don't want to learn how to play the game, how do you expect to teach them?
People don't seem to have an issue learning how to play something like LoL or CS:GO, even though the in-game resources for those games are minimal at best. Why is it different for fighting games?

I think like if the game was missing offline versus or online versus modes then the reviews deserve to be damning. They are essentially what a fighting game needs.
I mean I'm not happy trials won't be in till March. Trials are what I play when I'm sick of getting my ass handed to me online.
And I agree that the negative point in needing a tutorial is completely unnecessary. There are plenty of resources online for new players. Literally a google search away. Though it would go a long way if Capcom just asked a few top/known players to give tutorials for them in the game in video form or something. Like, I need more tutorial videos like this. But apparently they're doing character tutorials in March? That is a big step forward. Being told "x character's strengths and weaknesses are" go a long way.
I mean it sucks people do use reviews on as a gauge for how good a game is, I need fresh blood so I can grind against them to get the rust off. Though this is Street Fighter, it has a big name attached to it so I don't think this game will sell poorly.
Plus there are the crazies like me who will buy all the premium costumes.

This was the perfect way to end the SF4 Excellent Adventures. I love that the "final match" was essentially against a vanilla SF4 Ken with "09" in his gamertag. That was a nice touch.

Since there isn't an OT yet I'm putting this here, but I wasn't expecting an 'online only' thing going on here. I was just playing through survival on normal and got to stage 28. 'Almost there Syphax' I think to myself. 'Only two more to go'. Halfway through the fight it quits out and says I've been disconnected and its starting the game in offline mode. I couldn't believe it, all that progress gone down the drain. Now I can't log back in, keep getting errors. There's no point in playing if I can't earn fight money offline.
I was annoyed at the lack of content but I kept on playing to justify the purchase. I'm wishing I waited until march to buy it, or they should have delayed it til march so they could launch it in a more complete state.
I think what they're relying on is for the community to try and teach newcomers the game. Which, of course, that's what they've always done but with the proliferation of YouTube I figure anyone interested in getting better at this game would be looking up tutorials on YouTube regardless.
A GGXrd style tutorial mode would have been nice, especially since SFV doesn't have a million mechanics to overwhelm a new player with.

It's really the wrong way to approach things since FGC players don't do a good job of telling anyone what anything is. This goes for lingo as well. The only FGC person who ever taught me ANYTHING about Street Fighter was Maximilian who mentioned double tapping, which I never knew it was a thing but apparently is a series staple.
Continuing on, details about Challenge Mode were also announced for the first time. Challenge Mode consists of 4 sub-modes, each of which has been designed to help you improve your skills and gameplay:

All that does is highlight the problem that who they're catering this game for is misguided, because since that content isn't there on Day 1, casual fans are going to pass it up because they won't care that it comes later.
Not having online spectating lobbies is one thing. Or a porper story mode. They could have atleast had the tutorial and trials mode for newcomers atleast on day 1. Weirdnhow tutorial is coming in March, for new Street Fighter players that would he something I'm sure which would benefit day 1
