To be fair to you that seems ridiculous that they just left you there with no induction or anything. I wouldn't sweat it too much really, any job where you're not even tasked to do something on the first day is probably not worth doing
Well I've never had a job that requires I sit at a booth for 2 hours without doing anything and I don't want one. If you're not required then why are you there in the first place? So pretty much every job ever then? It takes time to get people situated even when you've got people dedicated only to doing that, and most jobs don't even have that
That's common as fuck. I dont think I've been to any office where my signons, logins and vpns were set up day 0. You have to understand that you're joining as a cog in the machine, not as the CEO.To be fair to you that seems ridiculous that they just left you there with no induction or anything. It's really not. Things take time to get set up. I work constantly at my current job but my first week I was doing basically nothing but getting situated and familiar with the organization and position. To be fair to you that seems ridiculous that they just left you there with no induction or anything. I wouldn't sweat it too much really, any job where you're not even tasked to do something on the first day is probably not worth doing
Because they'll give you work and training when they have time to get around to it, and it's not always obvious or known when that might be in a busy corporation.Well I've never had a job that requires I sit at a booth for 2 hours without doing anything and I don't want one. If I were you I'd demand answers.

I've had plenty of jobs where this happens, sometimes it's an initiative test, other times they just let you settle in, either way, the right and proper thing to do is use the time to get aquianted with your surroundings and colleagues, ask if they is anything you can do, heck even make coffees or do a donut run for everyone. To be fair to you that seems ridiculous that they just left you there with no induction or anything. You want to hear about fuck ups, listen to this.
I was routing a heart for transplant. Surgery was in Dallas. I accidentally sent the heart to Detroit ( the airport codes are simliar).
We didn't catch it until the heart landed in Michigan and by then it was too late to retender for a flight the next morning.
Because e of that, the heart didn't make the surgery.
You're mistake wasnt that bad. So being such a baby

This was my first thought.

So OP how old are you, are you one of them millennials kids? The ones that need feedback and gratification every 30 seconds?
Your boss did the right thing.
Hold that L but dont freak out bud! You didnt ruin your life or anything like that.

Hey, at least the OP did better than the guy who walked out his job interview because he finished his paperwork 15 minutes early and felt that being made to wait was a sign of disrespect. And that guy was unemployed even.
Fake edit, I see the Thacker incident was already mentioned.
You can't make a judgement if a job is not for you if you don't even bother to try, you know, doing the job. Most jobs that aren't retail have employee guidelines that they have to make sure you're up to speed with, as well as mountains of paperwork to make sure you're both legally employable and to make sure you get paid properly. So you'll spend the first day bouncing around various offices, maybe getting an ID made, maybe getting a parking pass, maybe getting security clearance and a laptop from IT, maybe getting your phone set up, and definitely filling out a lot of forms.
My postdoctoral research position had a 75 page employee handbook that had to be filled out, and a 2 month lead time between employment acceptance and start date. And I was only there for 18 months. But hospitals deem it necessary to make sure their employees are on the up and up. My first real job afterwards made me spend an entire afternoon of my time getting a drug test.
If the basic onboarding process is too much for you to deal with, your job aspirations probably shouldn't be greater than retail, bars, coffee shops, or uber.
You learned this in 2.5 hours. lmao.I have learned from this, thankfully, and realize that corporate jobs fucking suck. I know I can be making more money than I do now but damn, if this is the way the world works, I don't want to be a part of it. That's kind of how the whole "killing myself" thing festered its way into my head.
on the flip side, every single job where I've spent my first week doing fuck-all have been better than every job where that wasn't the case
so,
To be fair to you that seems ridiculous that they just left you there with no induction or anything. I wouldn't sweat it too much really, any job where you're not even tasked to do something on the first day is probably not worth doing

I was thinking you were in pharmacology for some reason, is that right?
I'm not sure I should even give this comment my time but yes, it would be presumptuous.Would it be presumpuous to shorten this to "I've never had a job?" Perhaps so, but desk jobs often ramp up slowly.
I didn't really want this job. I loved my old one working at a small business and working with video games. I didn't actively search it. My mom hooked me up and kinda made me do it because if I said no then I never would've heard the end of it. But now I'm really not hearing the end of it from her because she keeps calling me, telling me that I fucked up my future, yelling at me over the phone, saying "how hard she worked" to get me this job, etc..It's not really helping my mood and I just want to kill her or myself.
I'm not sure I should even give this comment my time but yes, it would be presumptuous.
I guess I find it odd to relate because I don't just class myself as a "cog in a machine" like I presume you do.
Every post of yours uses a straw man. Stop it. MeaninglessI'm not sure I should even give this comment my time but yes, it would be presumptuous.

Yeah, my boss said that I can have the rest of the week off and I can come back next Monday. He'll just count it as vacation days (good thing I racked up about a month's worth).
It's okay. I've been hearing it from my mom nonstop so this is nothing.
And don't worry, I won't actually kill anyone. She just gets to me sometimes.
I have learned from this, thankfully, and realize that corporate jobs fucking suck. I know I can be making more money than I do now but damn, if this is the way the world works, I don't want to be a part of it. That's kind of how the whole "killing myself" thing festered its way into my head.
This sounds like a good topic to bring up with your therapist, namely in terms of your impulsive behavior, reactions to what was happening and its consequences, and your interpretation of events. You need to work on an attitude and perspective shift. OP's age and relative inexperience are not satisfactory explanations for what happened.
Outside of that, it wouldn't hurt if you started showing more initiative in the future.
