GAF, I've made a huge mistake. (Job related.)

I'm not sure I should even give this comment my time but yes, it would be presumptuous.

I guess I find it odd to relate because I don't just class myself as a "cog in a machine" like I presume you do.

These passive aggressive swipes lmao.

I mean you were getting paid to sit on your ass and play on your phone and you told them you don't want a paycheck........

What is wrong with you?

Also how do you think we all post on GAF during the day? We are doing nothing at our jobs and browsing the internet.

I know, i'm "working" as I write this. Easy money.

To be fair to you that seems ridiculous that they just left you there with no induction or anything. I wouldn't sweat it too much really, any job where you're not even tasked to do something on the first day is probably not worth doing
The first day wasn't even over. Maybe the guy in charge of bringing him up to speed got busy with something. Seriously, 2.5 hours. The damn morning wasn't even over yet. Sit back, walk around a little, enjoy a coffee, say hi to your new coworkers. This is perfectly normal in a lot of jobs.

Wow, you did that just after 2.5 hours?

At least you have the initiative to do something. Maybe next time ask for something to do while they are onboarding you. Like read some training materials or tour the office.

You had it all OP, getting paid to browse gaf. If that missing cable ever came your way you could have tossed it in the trash and said you never got it.

You didn't want that job anyway, don't sweat it

Honestly, it's probably a good thing that you didn't learn anything from this experience, OP.

If you had the proper perspective to understand that you threw away a potentially cushy corporate gig for a retail position, it just might be one of those things that haunt you forever.
ESPECIALLY since this job was gifted to you through special connections, despite your total lack of relevant education and work experience in the accounting field. At age 28, you're not a young person anymore; you should be starting to enter the early phase of the mid-career portion of your professional life, and at this age it's an very difficult to be able to switch gears professionally, without going back to school. Being given a foot in the door and starting fresh in a new, respectable field is an incredible professional opportunity nowadays, and you wasted it over pettiness.

So, yeah, a little denial might not be the worst thing for you here. Gotta be able to sleep at night.

I had a job that paid 100k where they had months to prepare for my arrival where I did basically nothing for several months. I felt the same way about my time not being respected, but a gig is a gig. Spent a lot of time on Gaf.

I work at a fast-paced Fortune 500 company and I did nothing my first day but meet a few people and sit at my desk for a few hours.

Now I'm busy as hell.

How I miss my first week at work. I had time to clean my desk back then, now it's all dusty. At least I manage to keep it somewhat organized

How is your time not being respected though? There are people who bust their asses every day for minimal wage and your being given that money for nothing. Seems the opposite to me, they don't have anything for you to do but they're still paying for your time since they want you there. Unless I am missing something.

Yeah, my boss said that I can have the rest of the week off and I can come back next Monday. He'll just count it as vacation days (good thing I racked up about a month's worth).

What the fuck

I have learned from this, thankfully, and realize that corporate jobs fucking suck. I know I can be making more money than I do now but damn, if this is the way the world works, I don't want to be a part of it. That's kind of how the whole "killing myself" thing festered its way into my head.

What the fuck???

This whole story isn't about the job at all. It's a "fuck you, mom" story. You had a job you liked, your mom pressured you into something you didn't want to do, then you blew it off because it didn't fit your world view.

Like, hey, fine, how you deal with your family issues is up to you, but damn this is a weird thread.

Well I've never had a job that requires I sit at a booth for 2 hours without doing anything and I don't want one. If you're not required then why are you there in the first place?

Have you never had a white collar job? At both of mine you don't do much for the first few weeks. It's all part of the process.

That's what you learned from this?

Yeah, sounds like bipolar disorder. He casually says hes going to kill himself in the OP. This could be very serious.

You didn't ask your boss about it before just straight up quitting? What in the world?

And yes that is standard as hell for non higher jobs that you sit and read company policy stuff for your entire first week and get fuck all to do for about the first month.

He's referring to his old videogame-related job boss as "my boss" here.

Which really gives off the vibe that he only showed up today to pay lip service to his mom's sticking her neck out.

Yeah, I know. That's what I'm saying. Playing up the old job like this means they're super comfortable there and that the new job was a pressured deal.

Anyway, the ultimate answers to this thread are: no you didn't fuck your life up, and no, please do not kill yourself or anyone else.

Just.. get some empathy and perspective, I guess.

The guy who was supposed to be training me just read about football and talked on the phone with his friends for two weeks straight while making excuses for why he was behind on everything.

I had left a very rewarding job where I was highly respected to take a chance and grow in a new field, and the juxtaposition of the focused and intense nature of my last job with what felt like a complete waste of time was very difficult for me to adjust to. I got over it however.

ouch OP.

as many posters before me said, what you went through is normal. I remember not having shit to do in my "training" period.

Corporate life is fucking weird.

Except....you don't even know if your job actually sucked because you were impatient, and decided to walk out while other people were most likely running behind the scenes trying to get you set up.

You made a mistake but it's not the end of the world. The next time someone hires you to sit on your arse and do nothing, you hold onto that job tightly!

Yeah, you don't do that.

Not just in corporate jobs, but anywhere. Whether in government, academia, private or public sector, small business or corporate. You don't do that.

People who work for me often go from "boy I don't have enough to do" on day 1 to "oh god there's so much work" by day 7. Once they figure it out they coast, but I'm sorry, there's just no easier way for me to bring people up to speed, and believe me, I've tried a lot of different methods.

This is why I say to learn some empathy: You have no idea what the situation was for your superior. A lot of the thoughts in the OP ("Maybe I'm not meant for this! I'm not in a point where I should be wasting my time! I fucked up my life!") are really self-centered. You've got to get out of your own head for a bit.

this generation's attention span really has hit rock bottom

jk, but what exactly were you expecting when you complained about your job to your boss because you had to sit around for 2 1/2 hours and then walked home and then later called your boss begging to get the job back, all on your first day? Holy shit

I keep thinking about this thread. I haven't had an OP stick with me like this in some time. I can't imagine the reaction of anyone did that in a place I worked at. It would be amazing and be brought up randomly from then on

OP may not be fit for anything new that isn't self employment that doesn't deal with other people. The social skills utilized are impeccable.

Ahhh yeah, that makes sense, I vaguely thought it was gong to be that situation but wasn't sure.

Office jobs can take weeks before you hit your stride. You can start with nothing to do then slowly build up responsibility.

2.5 hrs. Why not just ask if you could be doing anything? You had your phone so if they say no you can get paid to browse.

What's wrong with you?

The OP is so ridiculous, I have a hard time believing it. I just.. what... I mean...

Is it a sense of entitlement, in a way? A sign of impatience? I've honestly never heard of someone quitting because they were not given work the first two hours of starting.

The more I think about this thread , this is what I am taking out of it also.

I cannot remember the last time I pondered about a Gaf thread when I was not on the forum so bravo!

OP didn't ever want the job and was happy at Gamestop or wherever he worked. Which is fine but he just handled it in the worst possible way.

Instead of mom being pissed off, she also looks pretty bad from whoever gave her the favor.

Life goes on, OP will feel like shit for a couple of days and then hopefully this comes out as a positive life lesson
