GAF, I've made a huge mistake. (Job related.)

So after all this time, I was left to do nothing. And while 2.5 hours doesn't seem like a long time, all this build up that amounted to this was just disappointing as fuck.

15 years ago I got an internship for a vgame company. First day they had me sorting concept art. At the end of the day I walked into hr and said I was bored, I didn't come to sort files.
The design director gave me a task. I did well. He invited me to work from his office. I learned how games were made by doing. It was the beginning of a great career.
All because I was bored and asked for more. Not quitting.

This feels representative of the millennial generation. Probably wrong in the grand scheme of things, buthe an interesting data point.
 
I mean if nothing else how about trying a heartfelt apology?

Call, and if you can get in contact explain that you were nervous, unfamiliar with the environment and if nothing else you'd like to say that you apologize for your comments. Thank them for their time, apologize again profusely, and end the call.

Not that you'll get your job back, but I wouldn't leave it in a place where it seems like intentional disrespect. And it might be a 'Hail Mary' but fuck it, as long as you come across as contrite instead of desperate I don't see the harm.

So it was disappointing. Why did you quit? Why did you take what was the first day where it's possible only a handful of people even knew there was a new employee as some sort of insult? And why 2.5 hours? Why not wait even a full day or a full week to get a clue as to what you'd be doing? Where else did you have to go exactly? And why did you not consider doing something beyond just sitting down? It's not like you were handcuffed to your desk by armed guards.

Unless the boss and HR are complete idiots, this won't work. There's no benefit to taking him back unless his mom has some serious dirt on that boss.

You didn't learn anything from 20 or so pages. This is the normal for any desk job. It takes time to set up, just be happy to be there. Plus mayb you don't wanna be successful making money at a cushy job with downtime, mayb just mayb u actually wanna do 9 to 10 pm job that won't nearly pay u as much but atleast ull be doing something even if mundane.

My god. Two and a half hours. Maybe they could have given you a better idea of when your training would start, but you couldn't even relax for 2.5 hours at your desk? Maybe the employee was busy with something. Maybe they were getting your training stuff ready. Maybe something came up. Do you know how long a work day is?

You're going to get times in normal work where there are lulls in the work. What do you do? Kick back and relax man. They're paying you for doing squat!

Jesus... 2.5 hours... lol.... if you're like the navy trainees in Australia, you have a legit complaint - 4 years in the Navy promising stuff to do and training... and nothing! 4 years of sitting at bases wasting time playing cards and shooting the shit. Few even went on ships!

well op i worked at arby's for 3 days washing dishes and frying frozen things before they decided they wanted me to be the main meat slicer since i was old enough. i quit before i would be tossed into such responsibility so i feel you there

Not everything is going to bow to your every desire. Those people all have jobs to do and are catching up on holiday work. They weren't hired specifically to hire and train you.

I still don't understand why you quit. What else did you have going on that was so important that you couldn't even last 1 full day? Bearing in mind you were getting 9k more in this job, and your own mother went out of her way to land you it. What was so important that you had to quit right at that exact moment, instead of waiting it out for at least a full day?

I love my corporate job. I get good money, great benefits, my job is pretty secure as long as I keep my head down, fixed hours, weekends off, home in time to see my daughter for a few hours each evening. It has it's ups and downs, sure, but so does any job. My first 2 weeks there were spent doing nothing because while I'm in the UK, our IT department is based in the US so getting everything set up was a slow process. These days however I'm very busy in the afternoons, but from 9am to 12 everyday it's pretty much Gaf time unless there's an outage or some other crisis. I've been hear a year to the day, and I'm up for a promotion and pay rise next week.

But you think you know everything after a goddam day? I don't blame your mother for being kissed at you. You had a golden opportunity but instead of having to deal with some downtime in the beginning, you chose to go and test games consoles or whatever for 9k less a year. And you still think you did the right thing. I can't remember the last time a Gaf thread has stuck with me like this. If you're trolling then seriously well done, it's probably the best I've ever seen. If you're not though, your actions and attitude are just appalling.

As someone that is out of work and can't find any, I find this appalling as fuck.

I would be down to getting paid for nothing, milk that for everything I could. lol
 
I have no idea how OP has managed to function in any job if this is how he takes 2 hours of doing nothing. Two hours by the way where they didn't bother to go to a higher up and try to figure out what was going on or if there was something they could do in the mean time.

Wow. People are getting laid off left and right down here and the OP can't sit in a cubicle for even a full day while getting paid. Not to mention the lack of respect for the OP's mom he displayed by just walking out. Imagine how the mom must be thought of by her friends now. Selfish as hell and not understanding life in the slightest. 28 years old and doing something like that? Damn, son.
 
your boss realized they dodged a bullet if that's how you behave after 2.5 hours of down time, not surprised they said no way. i work in a pretty busy lab and i still have the occasional shift where there is nothing to do (caught up on work, samples not arrived, etc etc) i wouldn't even consider quitting on the spot or anything close, especially if it was the first day where some disorganization can be expected. this thread is hilarious to me

His mother pulled some strings to get him a decent entry level accounting job (without an accounting degree or experience) at better pay from his former retail job, which he actually likes since it involves games.

He reported for duty today. Got impatient because he couldn't wait for 2.5 hours on the first day on the job.

Talked to his supervisor saying it's not a right fit. Burned that bridge.

His mother found out and has been fuming with him over the phone with him because she put her reputation on the line while putting a lot of work to get him this job.

OP still doesn't get it lol.
 
Way to shoot yourself in the foot! Having a little bit of patience can go a very long way. You came across as arrogant by telling them they aren't organized after you didn't have anything to do for a few hours on the first day of your job (have you thought that maybe you aren't their #1 priority and they have their own shit to handle?), and yet you had the courage to call your boss asking if you could have your job back? HAH. Unbelievable. Well at least you learned your lesson. I swear we had a similar thread where some guy left a potential workplace because the manager had a call to take and postponed the interview... man, I wish I could pretend my time was so valuable that I could just walk up and leave money on the table.
