Erased 6

outside of the scene with the red eyes and 5 seconds later 'oh hi friend', it was a solid episode. Not the same as the past episodes mind you, but solid nonetheless. Still a solid contender for AOTS. And hey the butterfly appeared at the end which means another time jump.

I wasn't hot about the ending though, feels like a bad trope lol.

All according to keikaku

Last ep was alright. Not as bad as episode 5 but still not on the level of the previous episodes. My main problem is that the present stuff just isn't that interesting. It relies on the fugitive premise and I never bought it to begin with.

I'm also not that interested in the mystery aspects since I'm pretty sure I already know who the killer is. The last few episodes make it pretty obvious and the opening straight up confirms it.

we won't have to worry about about the present timeline for the time being, there's gonna be another time jump. I'm hoping that if it's before the birthday that at the very least they have a montage going towards that.

If I recall correctly from the manga, this next time jump is a long one too. We won't be going back to the present for many episodes, most likely.

I think a lot of the issues with the present timeline come from the fugitive aspect where the police are competent enough to follow and capture Satoru fairly fast, but jump to conclusions fairly fast when I could swear most body inspections/times of death would've put him outside the time window to properly kill the mom. Enough questioning about him, his work schedule, and time of death should've given more than a reasonable doubt that he's the culprit. If the TV producer comes by and explains the mother's phone call, that would help his case too. Running away from the police was a horrible idea, but it's not like he has the time to go through the processes of the law and find a proper lawyer to defend him when the police apparently don't have a competent detective or morgue division .

So jumping into the past for a while might bring people back to the show's side. I wouldn't expect the show to jump back until he's in jail, and figures out the identity of the culprit. For some reason I highly doubt he'll change the timeline enough to not be in jail but hey maybe he will.

Dude, come on. You're in a show thread, if you are going to reference things that happen in source material that the show hasn't gotten to, even if obvious, you tag it.

Did you miss the scene at the end of this latest episode that has always pointed to a time jump? He didn't tell us anything that the show already didn't tell you, besides how long this time jump might be comparatively which is a silly detail I guess. Spoiler culture is getting out of hand.

They could not have made what was going to happen more obvious.

A literal butterfly floats across the screen and the episode ends.

Well, wish I didn't know about how long the jump was. Gives me less faith in the show overall because they're just going to lean on the past stuff harder.

The difference boiling down to

"I read the source material, and here is something that is going to happen."

vs

"I have nothing but speculation, but I believe this is going to happen."

If there was another Game of Thrones book out already, apply the difference in those two statements to discussion of last season's cliffhanger.

In Erased, obviously
there was going to be a time jump, but I would have preferred not to have someone lay out the duration
, especially as a complete non-sequitur that would be become apparent as the episodes continue.

But I could just be particularly sensitive since we're dealing with a murder mystery with cliffhangers every episode, as opposed to a show with a monster harem or whatever.

The anime cut some things out which made the fugitive aspect less convincing compared to the manga which is a bit of a shame. The anime also created a plothole where Satouru appeared when he got back to the present day.

Also what causes the time travel stuff is a bit easier to figure out in the manga early on. Though not 100%

Don't read the spoilers below if you're planning to read the manga after the anime or something. It's from earlier on in the manga but still :)

In the manga when he finds out his mom got killed he panics and runs outside and sees someone, then unlike the anime he goes a few minutes back in time but still finds his mom murdered but instead chases the murderer down to the alleyway where you see him be when he's back in the present day in the anime.

Someone correct me if I'm off base here, but Japan has an incredibly high conviction rate for people charged with serious crimes (>99%). Given that the murderer managed to get away with what seems like many, many crimes in the past, I don't think its too much to think that it is probable Satoru would end up guilty too.

Caught up on this show, except for 6. Having binged 3-5 just now... 5 is a little weaker than the past (chocolate?), few episodes, and some other complaints people had - Red eyes, evil grins - Became ham-fisted fast. The show's made so many smart decisions though that I'm giving it a pass. Really looking forward to next week!

I guess we can't escape from cliffhanger endings... The wait for the next episode is becoming hard. Anyway, I loved the episode. Some really good moments on it. And I'm actually happy that Kayo seems to be part of the "team" now and even is willing to help the others. I find it a bit weird that Kenya is so perceptive but I don't think it's unbelievable.

The most unbelievable thing is that Satoru tried to murder Kayo's mother.... It's obvious that the whole thing is a source of great stress but this was out of character. That would probably solve a few things, but it's definitely not the way to do it. Also, the Yuuki scene was suspicious. Either he's completely antisocial or he hides something. And the teacher.......

Anyway, great episode, nothing like the two previous ones.

Episode 7
Yep, that was a good episode. They handle the parts in the past much better than when they were rushing to get through the present day stuff. Finally caught up with where I left off in the Manga, so everything from now on will be uncharted territory again, so bring on the suspense.

And for everyone who loves Red Eyes

Manga comparison for anyone who wants them.
It's pretty much dead on accurate, with the exception of two parts. The first being when he went to Yuki's house; it was actually so that he could search around for the material that ultimately convicted Yuki (Homosexual and pedophilia books), where after not discovering them realized the material was planted to frame him after Hiromi was found dead. The second being the part with Hinazuki's mother where in the Manga, Satoru's plan wasn't to kill her, but to hospitalize her so that she and her boyfriend wouldn't be able to beat Kayo that night. The method for that was a Tazer made out of a disposable camera he picked up from the convenience store. The tazer didn't work, so he then moved to going to push her before he was stopped by Kenya

The bit with Satoru trying to kill the mother was sooo bad. Out of fucking nowhere.

I thought it was a little too forced the way it played out. Maybe if there was more indication of how stressful this whole situation is to Satoru, it would have been a bit better. As it is now though, it's kinda silly.

I'm beginning to understand everyone's problem with cliffhanger endings lol. So dramatic at the drop of a hat.

Satoru is definitely more focused on what needs to be done to save Kayo. I don't think he was trying to kill her mom, but definitely injure her, so she would be in the hospital and not able to hurt Kayo. I'm interested to see if his actions can actually prevent her death, as well as the other kids, or just delay it further. I guess we have to keep waiting, but that damn cliffhanger again! I want more now dammit.

Also, Kenya is wingman of the year already and it will be hard to take the title from him.

Episode 7

Very well directed episode that capitalizes on the strengths on the series while handling the weaker parts in pretty elegant ways. I definitely feel that the childhood parts of the series are far more compelling. There's something about the contrast between the serious dramatic overtones and the childish innocence and awkwardness that simply works. Some really nice moments here.

After reflecting on the weak dive the series took in the previous episodes and the rebound here, I can't help but think again of what this show reminds me the most of - 20th Century Boys. There too, even with Urasawa's much stronger writing, the story excelled when dealing with the past and the childhood and revisiting it with the retrospect of grown adults. The actual adult scenes set in the future eventually got more and more convoluted and struggled to stay consistent on their own without the crutch of being haunted by the nostalgia of yesteryear.

I didn't really have an issue with any of the silly scenes this week either. Is Kenya too bright? Yes, but he's always been this way. Satoru's answer about wanting to be a hero of justice was perfect, and highlights the contrast I mentioned earlier. Their entire "rescue plan" for Kayo is great too. It's the stuff kids would come up with. I have no issues with Satoru trying to "kill" Kayo's mom either, because if you look at the way the entire scene was directed, it was clear he wasn't going to succeed no matter what. At worst he would push her down the stairs and cause her to sprain her leg or something. He's so much smaller, and he really overestimates the damage he can do to an adult, so it felt more like a Scooby Doo thing. LIke Kayo would say.... "baka nano?" I love that almost whimsical carefree tone where it's about kids thinking they can overcome the impossible. It's why stuff like Goonies can be so appealing.

The best scene in the entire episode has to be the transition where the teacher's eyes turn into street lamps though. It's way more creative than usual, and his eyes weren't even red!

I also feel that the cliffhanger this week is the first cliffhanger that is actually earned. It didn't feel cheap or random, but shows yet again that Satoru cannot account for everything, and that danger lurks in all his blind spots. It is a cliffhanger directly related to the cause and effect of the actions in the episode itself, so it worked really well.

Noooooo!

Outside of Yuuki's eyes it was a really good episode. It could also be someone that isn't the killer at the end. I think I saw rope though. Never mind, it's a backpack. So that could possibly be Satoru's mother. She may have followed him when he went out that night and sort of knows what's going on. Still don't know why he doesn't involve his mother, unless he's worried it might tie back into her death.

Probably this, considering her being with his mother would put them both at risk if the killer knew as he's not shy burning down a house to do so. In that sense it's the right call to make. (I'd probably do the same in that situation)

The bit with Satoru trying to kill the mother was sooo bad. Out of fucking nowhere.

It's a nice little tie-in to Episode 2 where Kayo asks him "Could you kill somebody for me?" during their first meeting. Also fun to see the evolution considering back then he told her that he couldn't kill somebody for her, compared to now in this episode where Satoru was seemingly ready to do just that. You can definitely see the tension and stress he is going through from this alone.

Oh man that was so great. Back to childhood, Satoru is looking desperate and it seems everyone can get red eyes when they think of evil, still I don't trust Kenya or the teacher, Yuuki also looked really suspicious, the killer is most probably an adult but Kenya is up to no good. This anime has made me paranoid, I literally trust nobody except for Satoru.

I've been a fan of the VA this whole time, but that opening scene of him screaming was kind of awkward because the character's face did not match how loud the volume was. Don't know if it was an issue with the sound mixing or the VA, but it was awkward almost like people doing flash videos and pretending to scream, but not wanting to wake up people in the house so do they do that weird whisper scream lol.

As others said, episode was a def a return to form which only highlights just how many issues the present timeline has. The drama in that feels forced or the police are just incompetent beyond belief, but someone made it seem like that's the norm in Japan. At least in the US we'd have like lawyers I guess. Or CSI good cop good cop.

Nice to see the differences in the timeline but I hope there's more to Kenya besides "aight dawg" because he played along WAY too easily and believes Satoru like if he had a superpower. Wanting to be a hero doesn't translate with just how much knowledge Satoru has and the way he's phrasing shit unless Kenya already suspects he's a time traveler. Maybe this is where that chat he had with plays along

Also I'd like to either fire the director or whoever makes the decisions for this baity/cliche as fuck mystery scenes at the end of many episodes. It's doing a disservice to the show to have that clickbait shit lol

Episode 7

Pretty good episode. Satoru and Kenya had some nice interactions but Kenya is still very suspicious. He still just seems a bit too perceptive for his age and it seems weird that he approached Satoru this time when nothing really changed from the previous time at that point. The Yuuki scene was a bit much tbh. Its great how determined Satoru is to get things right this time but thinking about taking Kayo’s mother out was a bit surprising, he’s really desperate this time. Setting up the bus for Kayo was a nice scene then checking on her then that cliffhanger came. Hopefully it’s not as bad as it looks.

i hope Kenya isn't also another time traveler, because two time travelers in the same country who went to the same school is a bit too much to not make me roll my eyes

The stuck out to me too. I was trying to figure out if it was just an awkward take or the music swell was a slight beat off. I really hope they get a chance to fix it in the blu-ray release because it was jarring enough to slow my momentum going into the episode.
