Managed to go to level 30 on normal survival with Dhalsim. It was a piece of cake and then Dictator wrecked my ass on that very last fight. I'm not getting those colors ever right ? At least until they open the shop...

Yeah he's an ass. I think you can just let the timer run out after hitting him a few times and just stay away from him.

I feel like I'm having trouble deprogramming myself From Street Fighter 4. I only played Cody in 4 and now I can't stop myself from pushing buttons and expecting Cody things to come out. Has anyone else had this problem? How do I get past this? I've been playing Ryu, do I have to switch to a character that's less Cody-esque, like a charge character?

What you need to do is understand what buttons are advantageous on block, and which one's aren't. The difference in this game is that because of the input buffer, there's no longer an execution hurdle to be able to counterpoke (This is the main reason why Cody's buttons seemed stronger than they were). If you don't have frame advantage, it's no longer your turn.

Ryu's s.MP and cr.MP are + on block, so are his lights. You get Medium > Medium or Light > Medium > Medium before you're pushed out. You need to aim to catch their buttons on the first or second button press or your offense is done. The reason this is fine is that there's no crouch tech, so throws are MUCH harder to defend against. Teching throws while avoiding being hit by frame trap buttons is very difficult/impossible in SFV. This is the opposite in SFIV.

Scare them into teching with early tick-throws. Scare them into blocking by punishing the throw techs. Rock paper scissors.

how the fuck is someone out speeding me when getting up when we both attempt a throw?

If you do your throw too early, they can grab you in Throw recovery after it whiffs. If you truly did it at the same time you would both tech (Grab startup and active frames will auto-tech in the event of a trade). If you did it 2nd, but still didn't get the tech, you fat fingered something else or you were just too late.

Every ranked game I win I get a 'failed to send results to server' error message. It's like the game is trolling me. It only happens on the rare occasions that I win, never when I lose.

Bahhh, my net is out until Tuesday. I've been clearing some survival but it dawned on me that I'd have to do them again while connected in order to get that FM.

Woe is me....

I have to say i give up trying to play online for now .
Thank god i have local friends to play with or i would be beyond piss at capcom .
Still the gameplay is so fucking good.

ever since the servers started messing up its been pitting me against higher league people again, and my god these people hover of your body and just jab you to death on get up

I think I am slowly getting better at the game. I've avoided jumping super often, and learned to sort of poke and prod before going in. Still tend to get panic-y during a fight and lose my form when things get a bit tight.

Also, looking for some players who might be in my skill level. I made a google sheets that hopefully some people will fill out and find useful.Think it might be useful for people trying to find someone who's in their skill level and available to play when they are:

This guy also releases vids from FGC players https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igi7ztm65kw
It is pretty sweet how you can watch replays ingame from other players.
Nice

I appreciate all the answered Q's and video links the SF community provides on my journey to improve.

After some time with the game, I feel that the UI layouts are absolutely horrid.

There's things like the character stat graphs hidden just under the Battle Settings character selection screen... instead of the actual character selection screen, where it would make more sense.

And it's impossible to tell what level you or your characters are and how much XP you have and it all feels like it's hidden inside some random menu.

For example, here's the XP for Chun after a fight, no idea what the progress for her is:

But here it is in your Fighter Profile:

At the same time your overall LVL progress bar is viewable after a fight... but not in this same menu, or anywhere outside of a post-fight screen. ...why?

Not that it matters I guess, when just by doing 16 3-fight story runs you can get to level 100--which would probably take years by playing online. The whole level system doesn't seem to indicate skill in any way, I just don't understand what they were trying to go for.

Trying to get a online game going on this is a nightmare. And checking from my firewall it looks like Capcom didn't bother to add UPnP support into the game (upnp mapping table doesn't have any records for sf5 after trying to find online games/hosting lounge or whatever).
Even better they don't even list the ports that have to be forwarded anywhere. This leads to me getting 1 or 2 matches an hour (1GB fiber connection. and i do get matches in sf4 just fine). And no I can't go without NAT (i got 10+ devices going on and only 1 ip from ISP)

My only complaint is the crazy amount of ragequiters un Ranked mode! I lost a ton of points because of that.

They definitely need to fix this. But I suppose they really can't start penalizing quitters until they get the servers stabilized. There would probably be even more rage if people were losing points because of server disconnects, rather than just not getting points because of rage quitters/people going for fake win streaks.

That's super odd. I have been leaving the match finder feature on, and just messing around in training, and had maybe 4-5 ranked matches in half an hour and my internet is very much sub-optimal. Do you think it might have to do with your region?

Then again, I have a feeling not many players are online, even in total? I get the feeling that some people have stepped away from the game until the online kinks have been sorted out.

10886 - Total EXP for character
36/1800 - Total required for next level/how far along you are

Player is your overall level.

The fighter info present on the results screen should be shown in the fighter profile. I do agree that the overall level jumps from around 4 to 136 when you beat all the currently avaliable story mode. That's all it means to me.

Character level just shows how much the players uses that character. Nothing major but simple information all the same.

Yeah, this was one of the first things they showed off, stage transitions. Didn't make it into the other stages though, even though the areas seem to be created already.

feels like a work in progress

That and special animations when your heavy attacks are blocked. They even really focused on it in the Capcom Cup 2014 trailer lol. Ryu is the only one with three of those animations. The rest either have only one or none at all. I don't know if they rushed this game or their budget got cut short or what, but it definitely feels like they cut corners on some original details.

Well it does limit me to playing only with those who don't have a NAT (on ps4 i think the playstation OS handles upnp for them but on windows capcom has to do it themself). And playing only against people without NAT cuts the potential player base down a lot (at least here in nordics everyone i know has a NAT on in their router provided by the ISP)

Some ports were posted, who knows

been on a pretty extreme losing streak and cant pull off a shoryuken for shit, despite doing them everytime before

Relax, take some time. If you're on PC you can open up a stream and practice DPs in another window. Highly recommend some light execution training if you're not feeling it. Grinding a bit of execution then sleeping on it did wonders for me back in the day.

saturday, day 5 update: still cant use battle lounge
