Eurogamer: AC art used for Uncharted 4 trailer (Up: Naughty Dog responds)

Valve, Sony, MS, EA, Ubisoft and Activision have all done much, much worse than this in the short time since this gen started.

ND fucked up here, but if you're honestly suggesting that no other company in this industry has done worse in recent history then you're horribly deluded.

Those companies have all stolen art assets? That's specifically what I'm talking about. Meanwhile this is the third (or second) time this has been an issue for ND since the Last of Us - era.

I'm also curious if the shot we see after the zoom in on the painting is going to have to be changed too - I didn't quite see, was it clearly based on the Assassin's Creed art or was it not meant to be a direct transition? That's the bigger screwup if any actual assets were based on that art.

You mean this beach scene?

Nah, that is definitely different enough. The only issue was the painting being the actual art from ACIV... minus the pirate, lol.

Why are people saying "good on them" for changing out a stolen picture they didn't have the rights to use in the first place and just giving a lip service apology?
Do you want them or everyone that is not offended by this to offer you some potatoes? Maybe some lettuce and tomatoes too?

I was asked what they should have done instead of just swapping out stolen art for their own and saying sorry. I suggested paying, I'm not speculating I'm just saying they don't really deserve praise for doing the bare minimum once it hit the public eye.
The bare minimum would be changing the art and keeping quite.

lol @ waiting until the video was fixed before reopening the thread
Just wondering, if that was the case, does it really matter? I think pretty much everyone (at least those who had seen the thread) had gotten to say what they wanted to say, and it would also just be repeats of other posts, basically saying that this shouldnt happen and that it was a mixup etc.. Dont think there was anything thats being missed out by waiting for a reupload of the trailer, if that was the case.

They should've just put the pirate back in the picture...then rework the whole game to be an Assassin's Creed crossover. There'd be an AC game this year after all!

Personally I could see it passing a fair use defense, but it's certainly faux pas for an industry staple to let something like that happen, at the very least.

Alas, apology has been issued and image replaced. A black mark on ND, but harmless IMHO. I think they'll shrug it off and take steps to avoid a repeat in the future.

in what world would this pass as fair use? It's literally identical.

You've been peddling this narrative and it's never been true. Unless of course a bunch of typical shit poster speak for everyone now.

Go back and read the thread, or do you want me to link to specific posts? I said this is a terrible look for Naughty Dog if true and the hounds came out to make sure there was damage control. People were arguing for naughty even IF they knowingly stole it. I agree accidents happen and this, while big given how blatant, is RELATIVELY minor in that the only person who would notice would be the artist himself (and hey that's who pointed it out).

People were arguing that the artist should be happy for the "exposure" or honored that it got put in such a good game. That is disgusting.

This is such an asanine non-issue. The artist could have been cited at the end of the trailer.

defendant in plagiarism case: 'you know this really is an asinine non-issue, the person whose work i copied without citation could have been cited at the end of my work'

never presumed anything. Everyone wanted to write it off immediately because it was naughty dog and that's sad.
Come on!.I thought i was a tribute at first!.Why should i think it was malicius?.Do you think ND doesnt have enough good artists to make a beach drawing?. Dont you think they lost much more copying an internet image?.Is common sense but people with agendas takes advantage from anything and this pic was a fuel barrel for them.

Do you want them or everyone that is not offended by this to offer you some potatoes? Maybe some lettuce and tomatoes too?
Who's offended? I'm not saying what they did for their apology and asset change was even bad, it just doesn't really deserve praise for doing the bare minimum.
The bare minimum would be changing the art and keeping quite.
Nah, once it's in the public eye they know being quiet would be more harmful, especially with how nitpicky gamers are. The bare minimum is a token apology.

How much do you think they should pay the artist?

Nah and you are right. I was however enjoying the photoshops.

I imagine Evan Wells not being too happy about this. Whether it's a single artist's fault, it looks bad on the whole company.
Yeah, heads might be rolling as we speak despite the calm nature of ND's response to the issue.

At the very least, someone is getting a very stern talking to.

Plagarism doesn't matter apparently

Plagiarism is wrong and we know that. This was such a small portion of the actual game, which I why I believe that no one actually cares as much as they are portraying. I do know for the artist involved, this might matter a lot, which is why I said what I said.

If a person is going take the extreme position and make stupid assumptions about how much of the game is plagiarized based off this one occurrence then I feel bad for them, lol..

I don't think this should reflect on ND as a company but an artist stealing from a fellow artist is extremely shitty.

With that you are implying that the ND artist had evil intentions rather than this being an regrettable oversight not checking where the picture originally came from.

Love all the Illuminati fearing folk in here sweating to say that this was some sort of coordinated and well executed plot from Naughty Dog.

Like some random beach photo in a trailer for 2 seconds is Naughty Dog's Oceans Eleven casino heist shit, an 800x600 png in the midst of a CG sequence that likely cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Johnny Cochran over here saying, "If the pirate's missing, it shows premeditation and malice aforethought. Is Naughty Dog actually Digital Homicide? I've never seen them in the same room. Have you?"

It was probably a placeholder version of the trailer that was uploaded by mistake. I've certainly uploaded wrong versions of my art to the Internet before. Shit happens. Move on.

I wanted to check if the trailer was replaced on the PS Blogs (US, EU and France... 'cause I'm French) and both EU and US have put the new one but not on PS Blog France :|

Edit: Nope, seems like PS Blog EU didn't change the trailer either, so it's just on the US Blog

Some people really need to calm the fuck down in here.

You need to realize that using copyrighted assets fresh off Google as a placeholder in your game is a VERY common practice in the industry... Fuck, that's the whole point of the term "placeholder".

ND fucked up for sure by putting said placeholder in an official trailer but they owned up to it and fixed the mistake... Shit happens.

Nothing else to see here...

"Stern talking to", hah.

I hope any artists looking for work in the Santa Monica area are getting their portfolios ready.

That's its job though, evil intention or not he fucked up.

There's a french PSBLOG? I thought we only had the EU version.
