Eurogamer: AC art used for Uncharted 4 trailer (Up: Naughty Dog responds)

Tell us who should be tarred and feathered then. Off with their heads!

Could have easily just apologized to Ubisoft in private and waited for the issue to disappear, which it certainly would when the game is released and acclaimed. They corrected the video and apologized publicly within hours. The fuck up was bad but they did the right thing, even if their options were limited

They admitted that it was a mistake, fixed it and apologised, what else are they supposed to do?

They could have paid the artist they stole from, for one.

Why are people saying "good on them" for changing out a stolen picture they didn't have the rights to use in the first place and just giving a lip service apology?

They fixed it within a few hours and rerendered the trailer. Their response and the new trailer likely had to go through all of Sony's PR channels as well. It's pretty fast and Druckmann outright saying, "we fucked up," makes it clear that they don't take it lightly.

What other options did they have?

Oh they definitely could have gone about it the wrong way, but they didn't. They reacted instantly and owned up to it. They could of just not made a statement at all, not apologized to Ubi, and updated the video with the new artwork and be done with it. Thankfully they didn't do that though.

I really want to know if they re-rendered that entire scene with a new texture and re-did the whole trailer because of it or if they have an Adobe Premiere wizard over there who fixed that image

There's no way it's a re-render, it would have taken way longer to re-upload.

Unless the cutscenes are in-engine and not pre-rendered.

Most other companies? Name one.

"Gamers just are not ready for the future we want to provide with our draconian policies." "It is not us, it is you." "Normal people are not ready for our awesome glasses."

There's no way it's a re-render, it would have taken way longer to re-upload.

They are all in engine now.

As pretty as it looks, I can't be sure how many other assets have been lifted, and I'd prefer not to give my money to plagiarists.

I guess if they had stolen from an indie game instead of an Ubi Soft title, people would be more upset.

Lol, this one actually isn't a troll post I think. Wow...

Most other companies would sugar coat something like this, Druckmann just flat out admits they fucked up.

Naughty Dog still GOAT studio

Most other companies don't fuck up like this in the first place

Is it a big deal, no. Is it tiring that this seems to be a repeat problem for ND, yes.

This one is more clearly not the same place, I'd say. It goes from this mountainous terrain heavily covered in foliage to sparsely covered.
True, but I guess foliage coverage could change with time and the season, while the shape of the terrain is a better match here. In the other image, the cliff was pointed outwards while in the game location it was shaped the other way.

I'm also curious if the shot we see after the zoom in on the painting is going to have to be changed too - I didn't quite see, was it clearly based on the Assassin's Creed art or was it not meant to be a direct transition? That's the bigger screwup if any actual assets were based on that art.

It's great they admit they fucked up but hey, it's all good now. Respect to Naughty Dog for correcting !

This gave me another chance to watch the trailer, damn this game will be soooo fucking good ! I think i'll take the day off to play this bad boy !

I think it's an unwanted connection, overall. Especially when it seems like a piece of art that will contribute to the narrative, you don't want that to come from concept art for another entertainment product.

So putting distance between itself and the art makes sense.

We have no idea what actually happened. I am sure they have hundreds of pieces of their own art work they could have thrown in there. It's pointless to speculate

I was asked what they should have done instead of just swapping out stolen art for their own and saying sorry. I suggested paying, I'm not speculating I'm just saying they don't really deserve praise for doing the bare minimum once it hit the public eye.

Well, it's nice they apologized and all, I guess. You'd think they'd be more careful, considering it happened once before already.

Will there be a third?

It isn't enough that it is over with. Now we have to talk about how every other company in the world wouldn't be in this situation and how ND is getting special treatment for their apology.

Oh, internet/select few on Gaf. Adorable.

No it's actually quite the opposite, where people went out of their way to protect their beloved Naughty Dog.

looking back at some posts, it seems like it went both ways. I'm seeing mash of persecution complex fanboys and ND fanboys colliding into one thread.

Most other companies don't fuck up like this in the first place

Valve, Sony, MS, EA, Ubisoft and Activision have all done much, much worse than this in the short time since this gen started.

ND fucked up here, but if you're honestly suggesting that no other company in this industry has done worse in recent history then you're horribly deluded.

They may very well offer financial compensation. Who knows? But they sure as hell aren't going to knowingly leave Assassins Creed art in their game or trailer so replacing it was always going to happen

People have said it's based on a real location. I'm not sure on that but the AC concept art didn't really look like the actual in game place.

They could have paid the artist they stole from, for one.

You have no idea what you are talking about. It was a mistake, they admitted it and replaced it immediately. Nothing was "stolen" as that would require intent. And what "damages" would this "artist" have that would require compensation, given they took immediate action? Mistakes happen, they don't always end up in lawsuits.

If that art was concept art that someone had plagiarized, then that person almost definitely was fired today. And I'd have to assume Sony and Ubi lawyers did some talking behind the scenes.

There's no way it's a re-render, it would have taken way longer to re-upload.

Unless the cutscenes are in-engine and not pre-rendered.

Cutscenes are in-engine and real-time. But this is also the type of fix that is incredibly easy to do with a quick and dirty motion track and dropping a new piece of art in right inside a video editing program. Like a minute or two of work.

Most other companies would sugar coat something like this, Druckmann just flat out admits they fucked up.

It was a nice gesture by ND admitting they made a huge mistake that quickly, but I'm not sure any other company would be able to "sugar coat" this. I think the only possible course of action here without comitting a very obvious credibility suicide is exactly what ND did.
