Gamergate convinced an anti-sex trafficking org to join crusade against NoA employee

What makes this particularly tricky is that in academia--and I say this as someone who works in academia--people tend to make wacky, contentious arguments that they might not necessarily believe. I don't know if Rapp actually believes that the age of consent should be lowered, or that child pornography laws should be relaxed. But we're living in an age where people gleefully use tweets and other social media postings to get folks fired, so a tweet like that doesn't do her any favors.

This comment is on the money. Academic writing, at the stage of an early researcher, rewards the novelty and resourcefulness of a devil's advocate. What's important is not whether one believes the argument but whether the argument is available to be made, and soundly.

I came into this thread to make a sarcastic remark about how a mob that doesn't find gender/sexuality studies especially rigorous (to put it lightly), claims to support old liberal ideals where any argument is admissible and worth consideration independent of its source, generally favours erring on the side of cultural diversity when it comes to sexual mores not in line with American prudishness, and gets up in arms whenever somebody is fired for politically incorrect speech, is not only engaging in the kind of outrage they like to get outraged about, but is going out of their way to do something that nobody else ever does: actually read (and take seriously) a graduate thesis in gender/sexuality studies.

Except, of course, I doubt many of them have actually read it.

I'm not on board with the kind of identity progressivism that gets lumped under SJW, and I think it has a lot of failings of its own. I would even agree that much of the media hysteria over GG is as incompetent as it is overblown and has actively contributed to making the situation worse. GG would probably have a strong claim to moderate sympathies from my part of the political sphere if its adherents didn't make such a compulsive habit of behaving like the worst of the people they so brashly disdain: the selectively reading, moralizing, perpetually outraged and censorious, functionally illiterate loons.

You people are missing the point ... NOBODY deserves the kind of hate Gamergate hurls into a person

You're sortof missing the point that getting fired from your job because of things you might have posted on the internet isn't really high on the list of things that "Nobody deserves to have done to them."

I would wager...it's not even in the top 10.

:)

This.

Quote from her thesis re pedophilia: "It is not a dangerous condition by itself". (p42 of the link on page 1 of this thread).

That's a pretty controversial (to put it mildly) opinion to have.

That's not a controversial statement at all. Pedophiles can live and die without breaking a single law. It's a tragic condition and people that suffer from it and that actively seek help and treatment deserve praise, not ire.

It wouldn't be in academia where they bother to draw the distinction between pedophilia and child molestation. Funnily enough in context...

My ex-wife is a psychiatrist so maybe I learned this via osmosis but I thought this was general knowledge?

Sure it is.

I wrote a paper in favor of dropping the atomic bomb in Japan.
And another saying that Andrew Jackson was not a terrible person

Did I agree with what I wrote? No I didn't, but it was my assignment

Did you put these articles on your resume/LinkedIn? Or are you proud to discuss them on social media? That's completely different.

I remember a Political Theory class that put me in the position of defending evangelical views in U.S. politics. The entire debate was taped and there's an actual record of me explaining how gay marriage erodes morality in society.

I don't believe that at all, but I argued my hardest for it, because that was the assignment. The professor specifically gave me that assignment because I was the most liberal person in that classroom. If someone found that tape, I would probably just go "Yeah, that was me, I argued for that."

My twitter is mostly me posting my writing and jokes about vape stores. It's not really comparable.

My point exactly. I do respect your answer though.

If it wasn't games it'd be something else. Reddit, mens rights, anti pc bullshit existed before gamergate. I put zero stock in what they choose to call it.

Look at Trump, who attracts the same brand of loser, is that because of videogames too?
No, the stupidity of Trump supports is not caused by video games, because Trump is constantly attacking minorities, more so than the amount of times he attacks women, meanwhile it's the exact opposite when it comes to gamergate. To say that a hate movement specifically started for the sole purpose of keeping women out of gaming isn't influenced by games, (i.e. they just wanna keep the icky girls out of gaming and keep the status quo of absolutely terrible portrayals of women to name an example), or that the state of gaming at the time or throughout history wasn't part of the issue is being quite disingenuous.

GG is basically in it "for the lulz" at this point. It's really hard to co-ordinate a rabid mob in any direction for actionable change, so what GG does is grabs random shit (in this case, a thesis that some NoA employee wrote) and sees what sticks. It could be an old blog post from someone that works at Microsoft, or a high school newspaper article by someone at Ubisoft, it really doesn't matter. GG is just trawling through detritus and dredging up and slinging about whatever is most likely to get people to yell at each other.

It sucks. I figured it had stopped being a thing by now, but I guess the remnant of this group is just going to march on being awful people for an unfortunate amount of time.

I'm not inclined to go look, but I have no reason to believe they aren't still largely based out of 8chan - which is blacklisted from most major search engines for hosting extremely sketchy child material.

reddit is still shitty enough to tolerate these assholes. they probably also use voat? the weird neogaf stalker board is on there at least and there's a lot of crossover between the two groups.

anyway this whole thing would be funny if it wasn't so awful and sad. these are people who are mad that nintendo's localization toned downthe sexualization of a 13 year old.

I had no idea who this was and despite reading some of the material here I don't understand why they were singled out. I have a feeling that "anti sex trafficking org" is just a font for a group of people who want to harass people while looking less suspicious. Are they simply jealous that they work for NoA or do they simply hate their gender? Doesn't matter I guess. This is still incredibly stupid.

Why is GG still a thing though man. Damn. And what does this has to do about ethics in games journalism. When I read that 8chan was their home base I had to take a double take because I thought that's where creepers went to go look at pictures of children. The fact that this is the one place that would accept them should have been enough to tell them how awful the cause is.

Internet these days. A shit troll with a cause is still a shit troll. Only now efforts are organized and potentially frightening. Makes my stomach turn. Good thing they're too afraid to attack anyone physically though. At least there is that.

I thought they used Kotaku In Action?
Funny thing, one of the mods actually got mad at them for this stunt.

Is it? Pedophilia isn't a dangerous condition by itself. Acting on it would be. There are plenty of people with pedophilia who have never watched child porn, engaged in sexual relations with a child, and function completely normal in the day to day world.

I don't disagree with you but I would suggest that having pedophilia is inherently dangerous because it could prompt the sufferer to act on his or her desires, particularly when under the influence of drugs or alcohol or in an emotionally vulnerable state.

She also argues that possession of child pornography should not be criminalized (see p45 of the linked artlicle in this thread).

Yeah, this thread took a turn.

How a misogynistic bullying group successfully leverages context-less mob justice is astoundingly efficient.

A) I totally thought this was a parody when I heard it was the Wayne Foundation. Totally thought there was a Batman joke coming.

B) This is why context-less mob justice is terrifying on all accounts.

C) Nintendo can't possibly be that dumb. Right?

In regards to C), I certainly hope not.

Attacking someone physically is hard work man and well...you know. There's pretty much laws against that. Better to keep it to Twitter. It's a target rich environment and 21st century society literally has no idea how to manage/govern it.

The people who are arguing that the gaming community/industry didn't just allow GG to happen but also fostered it, need to wake up.

Stop defending it.

Edit: Wow. This victim blaming.

Victim blaming. Hah. I really dont care if the Victim (in the sense shes being "harassed" on twitter is a pro-pedophilia, and Child porn defender. It's disgusting that Ninetedo hasn't done anything about her.

I don't do social media.

I guess that's a good thing about me

Me neither, I don't wanna waste my time on social media when I can do better things on internet. I only go to twitter sometimes to check some news but I don't even post. Tumblr is only cool to see pictures of food and pets. Facebook is shit and I keep my LinkedIn only with professional stuff.

So GG is supposedly "anti-censorship", they shit themselves whenever a game comes over from Japan with editorial changes, but they want to get someone fired for academic speech?

Oh wait, I'm looking for logic inside a misogyny fueled anti-social justice movement.

Look everyone, they're targeting a woman again, what a surprise.

Its only disgusting that people are trying to defend a child porn apologist. She should be fired. Dont care about if its shitty Gamergate.
Again, a concerned call to arms against pedo advocacy rings kind of hollow when its being sounded in righteous anger that NOA took teen girl petting out of a game they published.

The cause lays bare that the concern is entirely bullshit. GG just wants to drag another woman into the street for slighting them. That's all they ever want.

Fucking idiots. I had hoped they had dispersed by this point.

At least it's been laid clear what type of group GG is. Anyone supporting them at this point knows exactly what kind of ideals they're helping prop up. =/

C) Nintendo can't possibly be that dumb. Right?

Whether they are smart or stupid doesn't matter now. Nintendo has to make a decision that is going to piss off one group...or another.

Usually...not always but usually when that happens; it doesn't go well for the employee involved.

C) Nintendo can't possibly be that dumb. Right?

It's not about whether or not Nintendo believes the accusation...it's about what the general public believes, and if it might eventually affect mindshare or the bottom line.

And this is one of those zero tolerance sort of subjects, where even the smallest whiff of it makes companies tremble.

Yep, this isn't about targeting anything but, surprise surprise, vocal women.

Jamie Walton was on an episode of the Fatman on Batman podcast (Kevin Smith basically started the charity with her). She obviously does not think much before she acts, which is a bit pathetic for the head of an organization that wants to become bigger and more significant over time. Her heart is in the right place, but she's coming across very poorly with this.

You have a point. On one Twitter post she is asking why isn't Alison fired to She never asked Alison to be fired.

In what world do we live were some stranger just comes a long and tries to convince a company to fire someone?

Yeah, like, if I were a gender studies academic, a thesis I might've written about a controversial topic. That might be a good professional thing to put on my linkedin

Apparently she's “Product Marketing Specialist at Nintendo of America” specializing in “Public Relations and Communications”, according to her LinkedIn.

How does a thesis about child pornography fits into that? Especially if you work for a company who has children as their target audience. I think that's fucked up.
