That was a short tenure, no?
He was there for 10 years. President for 7. He's 60. He has a lot money. Not really unusual at all when you think about it. Reggie left at 59. Americans businessmen tend to retire young, particular at high level positions like that. He hung on til Switch 2 was out the door and a success. Same as Reggie hung on til Wii U was replaced and Switch 1 was out the door and a success. Go sit on some boards and not really have to do anything, and get paid lots of money. Maybe write a business book or two. The lecture circuit can also be quite lucrative.

Always best to take the Seinfeld approach and go out on top.

I love the idea of Nintendo having a Japanese overseer in America. They need to stop NOA before they go too far. If NOA gets as far as Sony has, it's gonna be hard to recover. There's already a lot ot dumb shit that needs to be corrected.

That being said, if they really need the stage presence, they can pay Reggie $1 million to come back and hang dong on stage as a he presents new games.

Yeah he'd need way more than that to even consider it. And even then I doubt it.

What exactly do you think Nintendo of America does?

Stop them? Nintendo doesn't opreate like Sony. NoA have very little control.

Such a missed opportunity with that surname.

Let's be honest since Nintendo America's inception in the 80's, Nintendo America have been nothing but puppets. They hold no power. Reggie was a great public front man and unusual for Nintendo, he got a lot of stage time. He even got his own puppet ;)

Shibata is good news. He was at least good at Europe, before moving to Japan, so I'm glad he's at NOA/the west again.

Also, retiring at 59/60 is a great age. Enjoy the rest of your life with family, hobbies and life. Unlike Japanese heads. Shibata is probably older!

6 years as NoA president, which is half of Reggie's tenure.
Different time/ different set of circumstances. Reggie joined young and still had a lot left to prove. And after the success of the Wii very early on during his tenure, certainly wasn't going to leave during the doldrums of the 3DS/Wii U era. Surely he would've liked to retire sooner.

NoA is a wholly owned subsidiary. Furukawa (and Iwata before him) was CEO of NoA. Reggie was COO, reported directly to Iwata, then Kimishima, then Furukawa once he took over. Same as Bowser. There should be no misunderstanding that NoA has any dependance or autonomy in major decision making. They do not. They are a marketing and distribution arm of a Japanese-owned video game company. Reggie was an anomaly in that he had any input at all in occasional big decisions such as whether Wii Sports should be a pack-in or not.

Nintendo should be run by product people not marketing people. Mr Iwata was a product people, he understood design, programming, what it takes to make a game.

Marketing people will only be interested in making a profit and rising prices.

Even if Doug wanted to run for the hills earlier or Nintendo wasn't happy with him, they would have waited until NS2 launched.

They wouldn't have wanted to upset the apple cart so to speak. Good luck to Doug.

Shibata coming in as CEO is interesting though. Really interesting.
