I am terrified of a Trump presidency

I had a panic attack on Wednesday just thinking about the possibility of Donald Trump becoming Commander in Chief of America. The idea that an authoritarian demagogue could control the country I've lived in since I was born is chilling. The implications for the entire globe are unthinkable.

Since 9/11, the executive branch has slowly been gaining more power in efforts to 'fight terrorism'. For example, the NDAA for 2012 which allows the president to detain a 'terrorist' indefinitely without any due process whatsoever. Now think of Donald Fucking Trump with this kind of power. He joked abut killing reporters. What's to stop him from locking up a reporter that writes a hit piece on him, claiming they stole vital secrets and publicized them, making them a terrorist? He is so incredibly negative towards the press which I'm sure would carry over into his presidency. Somewhere along this line, factual reporting will turn into treason. It is all too easy now for him to spy on anyone using the NSA's vast power.

Even more terrifying is the thought of this man having the authority to launch a nuclear strike. We have no idea what his plan for foreign policy even is. If things got worse in Iraq I have no doubt he would nuke the country. Same goes for Syria. And an insane number of Americans would agree with him on this. Not to mention the war crimes he is condoning against ISIS. Who knows how he would try to wave his dick in China's face, but it definitely won't be diplomatic.

I've seen a lot of people on this board say that there is no way Trump can win. But Trump hasn't lost steam yet. After all the vulgar, terrible things he has said he still has solid support. I see and meet people all the time that support him. He will viciously attack Hillary Clinton over her voting record, her campaign contributions, her husband, Libya, the email server, and so much more. If she gets indicted, he could win the election. If a major terror attack happens in the US or Europe, he could win the election. If the economy tanks again, he could win the election. I understand this is all hypothetical, but they are very much within the realm of possibility. The fact that it even could happen is completely, utterly terrifying.

As I said in another thread:

It was entertaining during the summertime, but now its serious, and its time for him to go.

As an American, I am truly concerned what he would do with power. Really don't want to think to much about it.

We have a bunch of checks and balances to keep it from getting out of hand. I would be more concerned about his supports and the fact they exist

He has a lot of supporters but a lot of people who hate him. He'll lose via anti-votes just like the current PR governor.
It's not like he can do so much since it's not like a dictatorship.

They're kind of tied together. The fact that would be enough hate-filled, ignorant, and/or gullible people to possibly put Trump in the White House, and thus not enough sane active voters to have prevented it, would be a scary thought.

Not to mention those checks and balances would most likely be under influences in line with what he'd like to do.

Go cold turkey and stop watching all news coverage for awhile. The odds of a trump presidency are so crazy low you shouldn't let it affect your mental health. Trump and the News Media are both trying to get as many people to watch him as possible and it is creating a really gross environment.

What's the most serious or powerful thing the president can do completely on their own without any support from Congress, etc.?

People hate Hillary but at the same time people hate the Don. My hardcore ultra conservative family already changed their party to Dem and are voting for Hillary over the Republican choices.

I hope others do the same.

If it terrifies you so much ask yourself what you're doing to stop it.

Have you donated to Hillary? Volunteered for her? Set aside time in November to fly to a swing state and knock on doors. I did it in 2012. If the election looks close this time around, I'll do it again.

Get involved.

At least you can talk. Who are you?
Question for America: Is this Trump hysteria something to genuinely consider and prepare for, or is it just because the media can't shut about about him and Trump can't shut up either?

Trump doesn't believe a single thing he says, just go watch his past tapes and views on issues. He completely destroyed the GOP in a matter of months. Tea Party fractured the party, Trump took a sledge hammer to it.

He's not going to go off the handlebars, he's not going to institute a fascist government, dude is pandering so hard that it's stunning that the entire world hasn't caught on.

Besides, this is all going to come to ahead at the RNC with a brokered convention where he is going to have the nomination stolen from him. If that doesn't happen then GOP will run a third party candidate to try and cut him off from the party.

There are too many checks and balances to have a president basically destroy a country on his own. Nobody would authorize a nuclear strike because he wanted to, that's now how the system works.

He is almost certain to be the Republican nominee at this point.

That means there is in fact a very real possibility that he could be the next President.

I mean, we have what he said on the books, and most of it isn't pretty, but it's also his supporters, which are another level of nuts. It's an ugly campaign and it's working.

You need to calm down. Even if he gets elected, Donald Trump is not going to outlaw free speech and nuke all of Eurasia. He'd hardly be the first dogshit human being to be president, and I'd be very surprised if he was functionally worse than having Dick Cheney pulling the strings for 8 years. Donald Drumpf is 97.642% pure bullshit, and the fact that maybe as much as 40% of the country loves the taste of bullshit doesn't mean that he's going to Magoo his way into making the country a nuke-spewing third world dictatorship

Little from column A and a little from column B at this point.

I've had this feeling that Trump is pulling the biggest Troll job in history. Using whatever means just to get elected for some bigger purpose.

I feel like it doesn't really matter, though. As long as they have this gang war aka political party separation, they'll rarely get much done.

He will never get the swing votes..he is too extreme. Unless he's drastically becoming moderate without losing his face and not being exposed as a flipflopper, which he already is ironically...

I think it would be a hell of a ride. While the garbage he spews is ridiculous I doubt he would actually go through with it.

Cant blame you. The path to victory is nearly impossible for him to overcome in a GE but being an undocumented immigrant that fear is still high. At least a majority of you have legal residency or citizenship here. I'm likely fucked if he's elected. But yes, he'll do a lot of damage in the world if he becomes POTUS.

Eh he probably won't win either way. The republicans haven't exactly been able to put their action plan of winning the election between Trump and the infighting.

Course there's always his wildcard status, you never know what the right charisma at the right time can do. But if he does get elected, with all of his wildly unconstitutional/impossible promises, I don't see his followers being too impressed when they realize he can't really do anything.

But yeah, I was convinced of a likely Clinton presidency day one, at least Sanders seems to be competing, and he's got a chance to take it.

I don't see a very good chance for republicans. Honestly, they should be more worried that party doesn't tear itself apart.

Fortunately the President is not a king, and Trump would have a harder time getting stuff done in Congress than Obama did. Trump talks a big talk, but the position doesn't allow for him to walk the walk.

I fully expect Trump to move back towards the center should he get the GOP nomination (not that it'd make me like him).

I'd be more afraid of a Cruz presidency than a Trump one.

Don't you want to live in a world where you get to tell your grandchildren where you remember the location and time when you witnessed the American coup de grâce live on TV?

I feel like some of you guys missed the Bush presidency. If you can survive that, you can survive President Trump.

They don't want him either.

You sure? They already are falling in line. He even has governors at his side and senators! At last night's debate, they said they would support him if he became the nominee. I just have a feeling once he is, most of them will back him.

Its really a scary thought.

You shouldn't be afraid of ghost stories.

Something, something, something...you are in one.

OT: I don't think he can win the general. I am more worried about his supporters. He has brought the ugly side of America to the forefront and emboldened the angry racist who would have otherwise stayed low key. That is something that will stick with us long after Trump losses the general.
