Stardew Valley |OT| Resting Under a Harvest Moon [Up: now on PS4]

Hey GAF, I've been following this thread and enjoying the conversation. Thought I'd finally jump in and log on. It's been awhile since I played a new game while everyone else was playing it.

One thing I did early to make some money was create several of those recycle machines, then fish up old CDs and broken glasses. These turn into refined quartz that sell for 50g each. The beauty of this is that you can use that little pond on your farm as a fishing hole. You don't need to waste time walking to your favorite fishing spot and it doesn't trigger that mini game which also wastes time. Because of this, you can end up fishing a lot of junk. Broken CDs and broken glasses turn into refined quartz but the driftwood sometimes turns into coal, and soggy newspapers sometimes turn into cloth (300g+ each). That black junk also sometimes turns into coal too.

Clay was also something I needed early. Can't remember for what, but around level 10 in the mine, you can use a hoe and dig under the dirt there, and you will find plenty of clay.

Sometimes you'll see rapid little ripples of water in the ocean in one spot. If you can throw your line into this, the fish bite extremely often. I ended up getting half a day's worth of fish just by throwing my line into it and kept getting fish biting almost immediately. If you see one while fishing off the pier, stop and drop whatever you are doing and try to get your line into it.

If you plant that starter grass in 4 or 5 bald areas of your farm, your farm will be overrun with grass by the end of two seasons. I wish there were a way to remove all the hay from your silo at once and sell it, but selling hay doesn't net you any profit.

You should turn on the TV and watch that Sauce Mama show every day because that's how you learn a lot of recipes. Also, build the bridge on the beach so you can go to the tidal pool and pick up coral for free.

Thanks for the advice about planting blueberries! :) I'm just starting the winter season now and loving the game so far.

The game pauses time when you're in the fishing minigame(except during events with timed fishing games), so no time is being wasted. There are plenty of fish that are worth more than 50g, and I don't believe trash earns fishing experience.

Fishing is a great source of early income and at level 10 with the iridium rod you can easily pull in 5-7k+ a day from fishing. While crops can and will outpace this, that's pretty great since you can achieve this steadily as early as summer.

I am definitely curious to see how this would do in Japan. Nintendo should start getting some talks going for a NX port.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, fishing is great for earning early in the game and lots of the fish you fish up is worth more than 50g, but I meant playing that fishing game is a time sink irl. Plus, some days when you get home at 11:00pm and it's too late to walk all the way to the docks to do 1 hour of fishing, reeling up junk from your farm pond and putting it into your 4+ recycling machines before going to bed is better than going to bed early.

About scaling:

There are two limits in this game, time and money.

Money essentially increases exponentially

Time is the real limiter because there mathematically is so much you can do a day. Sprinklers, horse and shortcuts like Bus Stop <---> Mine are the only ways that really cut down on your optimum time investments.

Short of introducing more ways to turn money into time, an imbalance between the two where you're constantly with too much money but not enough time is going to occur.

A) Who do I talk to about building the forge? I got the blueprints but Carpenter lady's not having it neither is Blacksmith guy
B) This game needs a bike mod.

A) For smelting ores? You build it from the crafting menu

B) You can get a horse and iirc it doesn't requires care at all.

Aaand CC restored. Rabbit's foot was probably the most annoying. It only took about a season with 12 rabbits in my coop. Ended with 2.2M made in total, kegs are real money maker and scales extremely well with volume.

I'll put the game down for now, I've done what I've wanted to do and anymore will have me analysing all the bad points and souring me on the game. Definitely excited to see where ConcernedApe takes this and I'll probably be back with the multiplayer update. This game is a well deserved success.

Aight guys help me out. I got that mod that allows for the calendar to be opened by clicking on the date, however it's not working :s

Got it installed in that mod folder, and it says it's being loaded.

Wait, how can you get married when your affection isn't maxed out? You cant even get the marriage item until someone has 10 hearts.

I don't think they are saying that they didn't max out affection, they're saying that they didn't go from zero to max affection over a single season like you suggested earlier, i.e. I'm guessing instead that they gradually rose their spouse's heart affection over a couple of seasons or so, gradually getting it maxed out by the season when they subsequently got married + achieved several other things.

Is this for real? Will you also get some kind of discount for basically saving his livelihood?

The only benefit you get is that he's opene every day, and you're not screwed by forgetting to stock up on seeds, going to store, and discovering he's closed.

TBH, by the time you shut JJ Mart down, you're far enough into the game where you really don't need to have Pierre open every day.

You can't even max out a person's affection in one season, as far as I'm aware. You need at least 2.5 seasons to max a person's affection.

Not really 1 season (he probably meant finishing up from whatever he had them at already) but it doesn't really take that long.

- Some of the Help Wanted quests comes with "XXX will be grateful/happy", that's 1 heart (and these can happen multiple times)
- Gifting on their birthdays is another 2 hearts (with their best gifts at least).
- The secret santa event in Winter is another 2 hearts as well, although who you get is random.

I started year 1 summer with a 2-hearts abigail. I got her to 10 hearts by fall 13 (gifted on her birthday at 8 hearts). I couldn't marry her immediately since I didn't get my house upgrade at the time, and I had to wait for a raining day too, so the wedding only happened on fall 23, lol.

Wizard was at like 2 hearts mid-fall. Its now winter 28, he is already at 8 hearts...and I've skipped on gifting him the past 2 weeks since I'm going to get friendship from the bundles anyway.

"Everyday is great at your JoJa Mart!"

Now that im using the community centre morem fuck you crazy man that looks like it came directly out of Earthbound

No, seriously, who would choose Joja Mart over that.

Probably someone is doing a Junes mod while we speak lol

I'm getting more and more hearts with Maru and still no sign of those portraits with the 2 and 3.

-------------

I now have a deluxe coop. I only upgraded, because of the auto-feeder.

Nearly all my ~140 crops are being watered by sprinklers.

Next up is the barn and some cows.

I'm also going to create a small bee house field.

So did this game just completely catch everyone by surprise or what?

It's been out for over a week. Has close to 6,000 Steam user reviews with a 99% positive rating.

...And there's still only 3 media outlet reviews for it.

LOL.

Where can I find a carp for Sebastian? The pond on the farm only has trash on the 'pond' below on the map is a lake and gives me lake fish.

.

Reallly strange. Wouldn't surprise that they were not used, or maybe used only when you are married.

Im working with Haley now and its being hard as hell, the change I wanted to give her to give her a profile view is to much and trying to stay in line with the original is making it hard.

There are carps on summer in the lake just at the entrance of the mine. I think they appear on the afternoon and are really easy to catch.

I'm assuming it took him more than one season, just wanted the clarification.

Anyway, from the math I've seen on the net, 1 Heart = 250 pts. 10 Hearts (max) = 2500 pts.

Talking once a day (and you only get these pts once a day) = +20 pts
Giving a gift (you can only do this twice a week) = +80 pts
If you don't talk to someone that day = -2 pts

So at the end of the week, you should have 300 pts. In other words, not counting the board requests (if you're lucky enough to get one for that particular person), you should be getting at least 1 Heart every week as long as you do those two things.

Good to know that I can't buy a barn for my farm because the carpenter is at Aerobics class.

WHEN ALL MY CROPS DIE IN THE WINTER AND I HAVE NO CATTLE TO RELY ON AND THE TOWN STARVES AT LEAST WE'LL REST EASY KNOWING ROBIN WENT TO AEROBICS CLASS

Hahaha, and what about Pierre finishing 1 hour earlier than what it says in the front door becuase he heeds that hour to put things in the shelve but cant attend you, or the fisherman taking the day off randomly but still leaving the store open.

I got 7 hearts with her. Marriage is not far away :D

Edit: The 6 heart event won't trigger for me.

I put an ancient fruit into one of my kegs and I'm excited to see how much the wine will be worth.

Edit2: I chose to play the 1.05 Beta and the zoom out feature is nice.

I've played the fishing game on the Stardew Valley Fair festival to death to get 3400 stars to buy everything from the shop. Then I won the contest and received 1000 stars. Wish I have known that before.

Oh man.

PROTIP: If you're going to upgrade your house, the day before it changes, move things AWAY from the general area of the bed. Preferably to another room.

Just expanded my house to the last upgrade, and when morning came, I was stuck in bed. Apparently, the bed spawned on top of a chest I had placed to the side of it, and I was stuck on the chest itself.

Luckily, I had enough room in my inventory to empty out the chest, and then remove it with a pickaxe.

(I was swearing up a storm)

If you don't get a person a like and love gift in a week, does it make your 1 of 2 gifts useless? Do you have to get 1 of each for the whole week to get a skill up or does just getting a like for one week still get you progress?

My cat fell asleep at the entrance of my cabin and blocked me from going to bed. I started mashing directional buttons and swinging my tools frantically until somehow I walked past him.

No, I was at 8-9 hearts for a while, just that I got married in the middle of doing all this stuff in a very short time period.

I don't know why you're trying to call me out or whatever.

I went from little money, little upgrades to suddenly having an enormous amount of money in like 20 days. In this 20 days I pretty much bought everything and upgraded almost everything I could in the game. I don't see why this is unbelievable, or why you're being so inquisitive about it. From Fall ~10 to the end of Fall I completed almost all the major tasks in the game outside of the community center, and to me, that was a weird curve. That's how I experienced the game.

Oh man, some of the tiles on my farm seems to be bugged, its not being affected by my hoe.

floorbugndkp2.jpg

Posted it on the subreddit's bug report thread already.

I won't be playing till this gets fixed, since this is on day 1 of spring and I can't plant my shit if I can't freaking hoe the tile. Guess I'll be playing something else in the meanwhile.

Don't have anything constructive to add to this thread.

But this game is freaking crack. I am so hooked. The way it dishes out those constant little dopamine rushes of progress is just on point.

It doesn't seem to drag on you after a while like Harvest Moon. The depth and progression is just far beyond.

Quick question though. I laid some fertilizer down on some hoed dirt but didnt plant on it. It's the next day now and I can still see the fertilizer on the dirt but I can't plant on it, hoe it or anything... what gives?

Nah, I was under the impression you did all of that in the first season. Like I said, I was trying to get clarification, because the post seemed to imply to me that's what you did.

I dont even think its even remotely possible to upgrade all the tools, get married, etc. all in the first 4 weeks of the game.

I got this yesterday and I spent all day playing it today. This game is fun as hell, it just draws you in so hard.

The only thing I installed right away was the mod that makes the daytime last twice as long, and the sprinting mod, which is ESSENTIAL. Holy shit that simple mod makes the game ten times as engaging.

My fishing game is on point and bringing in tons of cash right now.
I've just hit summer and i caught the the legendary crimsonfish. Half a day of ocean fishing nets me about 10.000$.
Just grab three of the soups from the fishing vendor, the best rod you can afford and all the bait you can afford. The soups add a temporary +1 boost to your fishing skill, and with the iridium rod, bait and cork bobber i'm pulling in almost exclusively gold star fish. After three of the soups i'm ready to head back home.

Also, i'm finally reaping the rewards from my farms. I saved up money and iron/copper until day 1 of summer and invested in a field full of sprinklers and high-value crops.

I love this game. Can't wait to play more.

Question: does the sprint mod or the double daylight break the game/progression at all? if not I may install them after I buy this later today.

Personally I wouldn't get the day mod or the sprinting mod at this point. The creator made days as is for a balance. You aren't supposed to be able to do everything in one day. Especially once you get a horse that fucker flies everywhere.

Zero issues in my experience. But you might want to back up your save as usual.

One thing to consider with the double daylight mod though, is that some stuff will naturally take longer.
Like say, I wake up and I want to go to the store immediately, I have to wait until 9:00, which takes a while. Same with putting ores in the furnace. It takes in-game time for them to complete, so crafting ingots of copper and iron will simply take twice as long.
I see it as a very acceptable trade-off though, the extra time of day can be easily spent on other useful things.

Other than that, it's been perfect. The Sprint one is a must have, in my opinion. I've just re-bound the modded sprint it to L-Shift and the 'old sprint button' to L-Ctrl. It feels like the way the game should be played. I also kept the mod as-is, so the sprint feels right and not like i'm cheating by just zooming around.

I don't agree. I think it makes it a more enjoyable game, personally.

The extra daylight is whatever, I could do without it. I think I have it set at 50% extra daylight right now. Which isn't that substantial.

But the original walk speed was simply hampering my initial enjoyment of the game big time. And I haven't over-inflated the new running speed, I kept it subtle. It feels exactly like the running shoes in the Pokemon games. Which is exactly what I wanted.

Edit: Sorry for the double post.

The default speed is so slow, the "you get a horse eventually" is no excuse. I don't always want to use the horse when I need to get somewhere fast. That mod (sprint) is essential imo.

I'm pretty much okay using the mine carts and the horse.

Where do you get the 100 hardwood for the stable anyway? Doesn't seem like I've found anywhere that will supply near that amount.

If you've already cleared out all the hardwood on your farm, the only other reliable source is the area that's north of the Wizard's Tower. You have to break a giant log to enter the area. You'll know if you're in the right place if you see slimes.

You can get, I think 12 pieces of hardwood, and those stumps will always respawn the next day.

when you can cut down hardwood with your hatchet, there's a forest at the back of the Wizard's tower that at first is blocked by a hardwood log. Once you go in there's 6 hardwood stumps throughout ( 4 at the top area, and 2 in the bottom area with a secret entrance). They respawn every day so you can get 12 hardwood per day.

On another note if people wanted confirmation on how to change your appearance you gotta befriend
the wizard to 4 hearts
and then you
can enter a room at the back
pay 500g and it lets you go to the full character customization screen.

I did it because I wanted to change my character's shirt to a white one to go better with his marine hat.

Make use of the Secret Woods which requires a steel or better pickaxe.
There's a log north of the wizard's tower.
6 hardwood stumps spawn there daily for a total of 12 daily hardwood.

You'll also occasionally get hardwood from boxes in the dungeons.

Edit: Too slow.
