They created it. They have an emotional bond to it. It's their baby and they want to protect it. Sure it's just a movie to you, but it's their movie to them.
I'm sure it would pain Leonardo or Van Gogh to see their painting copied, remade, or re-envisioned by others.
Not true. The directors tell them to get from point a to point b. It is the crew's job to find out how to do that, and then actually do it.

This just looks so bad on so many levels, which is unfortunate because this could work as an all-female cast if done right. I feel like the producers overlooked all the great talent out there in favor of the current "it girl" Melissa McCarthy and figured they wouldn't need to have a smart or funny script if they just lumped her together with a bunch of Saturday Night Live comedians and expected gold.
Trailer was a miss for me. The humor looked really flat. Slapstick, people shouting, lame jokes stretched too long. I don't think I so much as cracked a smile, and these are presumably some of the better gags from the movie.
Also, I'm sure this has already been covered, but I cringed at the (only?) black character being the uneducated, loud, street-smart stereotype.

Yes but it's not something specific to this movie, it is most every movie nowadays. Half our time on post is usually spent on fixing stuff that shouldn't have been broke in the first place. That is also the reason people blame CG for looking "fake" in most movies. Sometimes you are dealt a really bad hand where no amount of work you do will look good. Be it really bad greenscreen lighting, actors failing to react to stuff (for example scene calls for huge explosion in the back but none of the actors or extras even flinch on the live action plate) and many many more. I have shitty director/film crew stories for days.

She's just another painfully unfunny comedic performer who has no real chops.

She actually says: "You guys are really smart about this science stuff, but I know New York and I can borrow a car from my uncle!" She's basically the Queen Latifah character from Taxi who is the urban black chick with all the connections and is the only one who can help the bumbling Jimmy Fallon character solve the mystery.
I would have preferred Leslie Jones portraying a scientist over Kristen Wiig in glasses saying big words like "particle physics" but she was too busy being the stereotype.

Here's the part where we all remember that Winston wasn't on the poster, wasn't a scientist either, was (originally) in it solely for the money and basically wasn't in the trailer, unless you count that one shot where you see his arm and the scene with the mayor, where he is in the background (as well as another very brief shot with him standing there). The actor is also not mentioned in the trailer.
Don't get me wrong, Jones' depiction in the trailer is very unfortunate, but comparing a character from two movies to one that is in a two-minute trailer is asinine.

As someone who isn't a fan of the Ghostbusters series I didn't like this trailer. It wasn't straight out bad, just incredibly boring and the jokes didn't click with me at all. It's a shame though because I LOOOOOVVVVVVEEE Kristen Wigg. I guess I'll wait for the reviews and what some of my friends say.

Admittedly, I wish Jones was one of the three scientists, but assuming she is uneducated based on what we know is racist in and of itself.

I would still say she's street smart. Like I said, it would have been refreshing to have Leslie Jones swapped with, say, McCarthy's role, but to me, specifically saying "uneducated" implies that the character is generally unintelligent.
Yeah, I don't think it's unfair to assume that, based on the trailer.

I know it's been discussed to death, but Ernie Hudson is an non-comic access character who shows up 38 minutes in and doesn't really do anything, because his role was cannibalized by Bill Murray.
The 25 seconds of Leslie Jones character that we've seen is doing shtick (with very mixed subjective results), but she's loud and violent because she's beating up a ghost, and we only know that she's an MTA worker rather than a scientist, which I would hardly qualify as 'uneducated' unless you're making a sweeping class statement.
Plus you know deep in your heart, there's going to be a dumb scene where the other three a making a ill-conceived plan and Leslie Jones is rolling her eyes and 50/50 chance it's how she eventually joins..

"Street smart" isn't mutually exclusive with higher education. They have her as a MTA employee. There is a clear separation being shown. Pretty sad that the black character (in both) have to be the uneducated one.

What do you mean "how so?" It's a freaking trailer. If you watched the Spy trailer, you'd assume McCarthy's caharcter was the generic "fatty-fall-down" stereotype when in the film she's anything but.
That scene where she freaked out about her friend getting possessed by a ghost shouldn't define her whole character in the movie. It's not like she's a some buffoon who doesn't know anything. She may not be educated by a university, but she's certainly educated by all the shit she reads according to Katie Dippold (one of the film's writers).
According to a writer at least, she knows a lot of shit about New York and whatever else she's getting from all the books she's reading that she's bringing to the team. What the hell did Winston bring? Absence?

I definitely am not making that accusation, I just think that the image is going to pretty big extremes and as noted is ignoring the actual character of Zedemore. Jones feels like she's supposed to be the grounded character who people can identify with, just like Winston was. Only this time she's actually a character and not a gag like he (unfortunately) was
It's been a while since I watched the movies, but...did he ever actually do anything big? Also, sad thing, he's barely in the trailer for Ghostbusters 2 either, although he gets a line ("I hate jello") and the actor is mentioned.
Still, the makers of the new movie should have known better. What might have been acceptable in the 80s is (thankfully) no longer okay.

Don't worry guys next time I find something I will credit it to some tumblr with 3 followers so it has more cred around here. Considering 80% of the OT here is all rehashed reddit posts I should have known better than label it as such.
Also the comparing to Ernie is kinda lame too. This is a new movie guys. All girls so much different and not a gimmick right? Not a cash grab? Three girls all super smart and one street smart person who reads "non-fiction" all day. Non fiction? Why does that need to be pointed out? Maybe she isn't reading Mad magazine all day but non fiction doesn't mean she's studying physics or something.
Plus the stereotype that she is broke so she has to borrow the car? Can't they buy something instead of taking that from the first movie also? Get a 3rd mortgage on the house and get a new car with the fire house? Not a fuckin herse that is guaranteed to have some kind of ghost living in it since its purpose is to transport dead people? Who borrows a car to fuck it up with ghostbusting equipment? She isn't going to get groceries - they are painting a borrowed car?
I'm not a huge Ghostbusters fan (I like the movies but that's about it) and tbh I always thought his character was useless. He just doesn't actually do anything.
The game is pretty great and feels like you're taking part in a Ghostbusters movie. The IDW comic series is also a great extension of the Ghostbusters universe and is something anyone who's a fan of the movie should check out.

As far as this movie is concerned, I'll pass. I loved Bridesmaids, but this seems about as fun as the Poltergeist and Clash of the Titans reboots.

I think it's very fair to call a spade a spade and point out general trends and tropes in Hollywood and how detrimental it is if black actors and actresses get pidgeon-holed into.
But jeez, I'm not about to tell Leslie Jones and her decade old comedy persona what I feel black women in show business are allowed to do.

Winston isn't great. Now Patty may be the same or worse, but that really remains to be seen.
I agree that the character is largely Jones doing her thing. In fact, here's Jones as scientist in a ghost chasing skit on SNL. You'll see a similar performance.
The larger issue is minorities being relegated to similar roles elsewhere.

I'm all for creator empowerment, and it's fully in Gale and Zemeckis' interests to say such a thing (plus it is their prerogative), but at some point you have to realize when you're being a little too overprotective of a piece of mass medium made for human consumption. But this issue could spawn a much bigger conversation about making art within a "conveyor belt industry", and that deserves its own thread. Maybe I'll make that one, maybe.
