Ghostbusters (2016) Trailer #1 (Feig, Wiig, McCarthy, McKinnon, Jones)

I honestly do not understand that.

Why would you care that much? It's just a movie. Yes, it may suck, but still. Not until you're dead? Your estate will try to stop it? That's super petty.

Then again, Bob Gale is a ridiculous control freak.
And what's bad about him caring that much? It's not like anything is lost either if we don't get a terrible back to the future remake.

They created it. They have an emotional bond to it. It's their baby and they want to protect it. Sure it's just a movie to you, but it's their movie to them.

I'm sure it would pain Leonardo or Van Gogh to see their painting copied, remade, or re-envisioned by others.

This just looks so bad on so many levels, which is unfortunate because this could work as an all-female cast if done right. I feel like the producers overlooked all the great talent out there in favor of the current "it girl" Melissa McCarthy and figured they wouldn't need to have a smart or funny script if they just lumped her together with a bunch of Saturday Night Live comedians and expected gold.

Trailer was a miss for me. The humor looked really flat. Slapstick, people shouting, lame jokes stretched too long. I don't think I so much as cracked a smile, and these are presumably some of the better gags from the movie.

Also, I'm sure this has already been covered, but I cringed at the (only?) black character being the uneducated, loud, street-smart stereotype.

What he means is there is a dude wearing a green slimer prop for placement reference which then we replace with a fully cg slimer. Look they are working on slimer on the screen next to me as we speak so you just gotta trust me on this.

edit: I got news for you if you think the directors of these movies know anything about the CG process.

That makes more sense, because nothing about the Slimer effect looks like a puppet (but not in a bad way - the effect actually looks great).

doesn't that basically imply they don't know what they're shooting....

I'll just let myself out.

Yes but it's not something specific to this movie, it is most every movie nowadays. Half our time on post is usually spent on fixing stuff that shouldn't have been broke in the first place. That is also the reason people blame CG for looking "fake" in most movies. Sometimes you are dealt a really bad hand where no amount of work you do will look good. Be it really bad greenscreen lighting, actors failing to react to stuff (for example scene calls for huge explosion in the back but none of the actors or extras even flinch on the live action plate) and many many more. I have shitty director/film crew stories for days.

Just fyi to those legitimitely wondering why people think the hate towards this Ghostbusters is sexist based, these vague answers don't help at all. Especially when "women comedians aren't funny" is a thing.

I'm merely suggesting McCarthy isn't funny. Nothing controversial. She's just not in the same league as people like fey or wiig. There's no hitchinsian women aren't funny agenda here sorry.

She's just another painfully unfunny comedic performer who has no real chops.

You should make a thread, love reading that kinda stuff. Assuming they're stories framed in a way that won't lead back to you obv :p

Also, I'm sure this has already been covered, but I cringed at the (only?) black character being the uneducated, loud, street-smart stereotype.

She actually says: "You guys are really smart about this science stuff, but I know New York and I can borrow a car from my uncle!" She's basically the Queen Latifah character from Taxi who is the urban black chick with all the connections and is the only one who can help the bumbling Jimmy Fallon character solve the mystery.

I would have preferred Leslie Jones portraying a scientist over Kristen Wiig in glasses saying big words like "particle physics" but she was too busy being the stereotype.

Here's the part where we all remember that Winston wasn't on the poster, wasn't a scientist either, was (originally) in it solely for the money and basically wasn't in the trailer, unless you count that one shot where you see his arm and the scene with the mayor, where he is in the background (as well as another very brief shot with him standing there). The actor is also not mentioned in the trailer.

Don't get me wrong, Jones' depiction in the trailer is very unfortunate, but comparing a character from two movies to one that is in a two-minute trailer is asinine.

As someone who isn't a fan of the Ghostbusters series I didn't like this trailer. It wasn't straight out bad, just incredibly boring and the jokes didn't click with me at all. It's a shame though because I LOOOOOVVVVVVEEE Kristen Wigg. I guess I'll wait for the reviews and what some of my friends say.

And the irony is that these people are probably trying to make a call of racism against this movie while also making an assumption that she's uneducated because she's not one of the scientists.

Admittedly, I wish Jones was one of the three scientists, but assuming she is uneducated based on what we know is racist in and of itself.

And as others noted, the first part of the image is a visual demonstration of nostalgia.

Ehhh wasn't she all "I'm not a smart sciency person like y'all but I know New York"? That's not an unfair or racist assumption to make, it's an assumption based on her lines. If she turns out to be highly educated in a non-science field (history or whatever) then OK, the assumption would be wrong, but yeah...

I would still say she's street smart. Like I said, it would have been refreshing to have Leslie Jones swapped with, say, McCarthy's role, but to me, specifically saying "uneducated" implies that the character is generally unintelligent.

Yeah, I don't think it's unfair to assume that, based on the trailer.

What's with all the reddit reposts in this thread?

I know it's been discussed to death, but Ernie Hudson is an non-comic access character who shows up 38 minutes in and doesn't really do anything, because his role was cannibalized by Bill Murray.

The 25 seconds of Leslie Jones character that we've seen is doing shtick (with very mixed subjective results), but she's loud and violent because she's beating up a ghost, and we only know that she's an MTA worker rather than a scientist, which I would hardly qualify as 'uneducated' unless you're making a sweeping class statement.

Plus you know deep in your heart, there's going to be a dumb scene where the other three a making a ill-conceived plan and Leslie Jones is rolling her eyes and 50/50 chance it's how she eventually joins..

"Street smart" isn't mutually exclusive with higher education. They have her as a MTA employee. There is a clear separation being shown. Pretty sad that the black character (in both) have to be the uneducated one.

but to me, specifically saying "uneducated" implies that the character is generally unintelligent.
Eh? No, on the contrary, the whole "person is uneducated, but has 'street smarts' " trope is exceedingly common, and moreso with minorities.

Edit: not saying that the black lady will automatically be that trope, but the trailer sure seems to strongly indicate that she is

How so? Is she going to be a super smart person in the movie and a silly person just in the trailer? I doubt it. It could be the twist though - she is the master splinter to the group who knows.

What do you mean "how so?" It's a freaking trailer. If you watched the Spy trailer, you'd assume McCarthy's caharcter was the generic "fatty-fall-down" stereotype when in the film she's anything but.

That scene where she freaked out about her friend getting possessed by a ghost shouldn't define her whole character in the movie. It's not like she's a some buffoon who doesn't know anything. She may not be educated by a university, but she's certainly educated by all the shit she reads according to Katie Dippold (one of the film's writers).

And then Leslie Jones plays Patty, who works at the MTA. She sees a ghost, and so she joins them. Patty knows a lot about the city. She reads a lot of non-fiction books while she’s sitting alone in that booth all day, and so she brings a lot of that knowledge

According to a writer at least, she knows a lot of shit about New York and whatever else she's getting from all the books she's reading that she's bringing to the team. What the hell did Winston bring? Absence?

I definitely am not making that accusation, I just think that the image is going to pretty big extremes and as noted is ignoring the actual character of Zedemore. Jones feels like she's supposed to be the grounded character who people can identify with, just like Winston was. Only this time she's actually a character and not a gag like he (unfortunately) was

It's been a while since I watched the movies, but...did he ever actually do anything big? Also, sad thing, he's barely in the trailer for Ghostbusters 2 either, although he gets a line ("I hate jello") and the actor is mentioned.
Still, the makers of the new movie should have known better. What might have been acceptable in the 80s is (thankfully) no longer okay.

Well of course. Where else?

What's with all the reddit reposts in this thread?

Don't worry guys next time I find something I will credit it to some tumblr with 3 followers so it has more cred around here. Considering 80% of the OT here is all rehashed reddit posts I should have known better than label it as such.

Also the comparing to Ernie is kinda lame too. This is a new movie guys. All girls so much different and not a gimmick right? Not a cash grab? Three girls all super smart and one street smart person who reads "non-fiction" all day. Non fiction? Why does that need to be pointed out? Maybe she isn't reading Mad magazine all day but non fiction doesn't mean she's studying physics or something.

Plus the stereotype that she is broke so she has to borrow the car? Can't they buy something instead of taking that from the first movie also? Get a 3rd mortgage on the house and get a new car with the fire house? Not a fuckin herse that is guaranteed to have some kind of ghost living in it since its purpose is to transport dead people? Who borrows a car to fuck it up with ghostbusting equipment? She isn't going to get groceries - they are painting a borrowed car?

I'm not a huge Ghostbusters fan (I like the movies but that's about it) and tbh I always thought his character was useless. He just doesn't actually do anything.

Someone funny.

3? As far as I'm concerned, that dreadful sequel we got in 1989 barely qualifies as 2.

1 and done - it's a perfect movie and everything else is ignorable. Murray should never have agreed to 2 - Razor's Edge wasn't worth it.

The game is pretty great and feels like you're taking part in a Ghostbusters movie. The IDW comic series is also a great extension of the Ghostbusters universe and is something anyone who's a fan of the movie should check out.

Yeah I was gonna say, this is just Jones being Jones. That's her vibe and I love it.

Implying it's racist means you must not watch her elsewhere or on SNL.

The cartoon was also pretty good. I consider the game to be Ghostbusters 3.

Man, I'd love an HD remake with updated visuals and rebranding as Ghostbusters 3.

As far as this movie is concerned, I'll pass. I loved Bridesmaids, but this seems about as fun as the Poltergeist and Clash of the Titans reboots.

I'm trying to think of the last time a trailer was scrutinized so heavily. MAYBE Star Wars?

I don't think even the big comic book movies have had such a loud reaction.

Because of this thread I'm about to watch Spy for the first time.

McCarthy usually isn't my style of humor, but I'm looking forward to giving it a shot.

Some people really desperate to call out racism. Jones even denounced those claims on twitter.

Take a breath and wait for the actual movie.

I've mentioned this over and over in the thread but no one seems to read or care about it. Probably about the point where I just have to detach from the rest of the internet chatter and get hyped in my own circles :/

I think it's very fair to call a spade a spade and point out general trends and tropes in Hollywood and how detrimental it is if black actors and actresses get pidgeon-holed into.

But jeez, I'm not about to tell Leslie Jones and her decade old comedy persona what I feel black women in show business are allowed to do.

As I noted earlier in the thread, Hudson didn't think Winston was all that and most of that is lionizing the character's significantly diminished role in the first film and lacking role in the second.

When I originally got the script, the character of Winston was amazing and I thought it would be career-changing. The character came in right at the very beginning of the movie and had an elaborate background: he was an Air Force major something, a demolitions guy. It was great.

The night before filming begins, however, I get this new script and it was shocking.

The character was gone. Instead of coming in at the very beginning of the movie, like page 8, the character came in on page 68 after the Ghostbusters were established. His elaborate background was all gone, replaced by me walking in and saying, “If there’s a steady paycheck in it, I’ll believe anything you say.” So that was pretty devastating.

I’m panicked. I don’t sleep that night. It was like my worst nightmare is happening. The next morning, I rush to the set and plead my case. And Ivan basically says, “The studio felt that they had Bill Murray, so they wanted to give him more stuff to do.” I go, “Okay, I understand that, but can I even be there when they’re established?” And of course, he said no, there’s nothing to do about it. It was kind of awkward, and it became sort of the elephant in the room.

People say, “Well, he’s sort of the Everyman, he’s kind of the guy who helps the audience understand.” I love the character and he’s got some great lines, but I felt the guy was just kind of there. I love the movie, I love the guys. I’m very thankful to Ivan for casting me. I’m very thankful that fans appreciate the Winston character. But it’s always been very frustrating—kind of a love/hate thing, I guess.

Winston isn't great. Now Patty may be the same or worse, but that really remains to be seen.

I agree that the character is largely Jones doing her thing. In fact, here's Jones as scientist in a ghost chasing skit on SNL. You'll see a similar performance.

The larger issue is minorities being relegated to similar roles elsewhere.

Welp. Seems people are gearing up for a bomb.

Caring about your own IP is being a ridiculous control freak now? Come on.

"Not until I'm dead and then some".

That's way too hyper for my taste. I'm all for creator empowerment, and it's fully in Gale and Zemeckis' interests to say such a thing (plus it is their prerogative), but at some point you have to realize when you're being a little too overprotective of a piece of mass medium made for human consumption. But this issue could spawn a much bigger conversation about making art within a "conveyor belt industry", and that deserves its own thread. Maybe I'll make that one, maybe.

This whole video is based around one anonymous post from 4chan that sounds super generic.

I'm not a defender of the new film, but this video seems a little silly.
