I'd put my money on Serena doping like the rest. It's just a matter of who gets caught.

Obviously not an unbiased observer, but I'd say that was a pretty clear case of stupidity/ignorance and not much else. Literally less than a month between the status change and AO. I don't know what the punishment will be but I was thinking she was going to retire today so in a weird way I'm relieved

In this thread: People will ignore the fact the drugs been legal for the last 10 years and only got banned this year on January 1st.

She said she was given an updated list for the 2016 year, that it was attached in an email, and that she didn't bother to read the list.

It's harsh, but athletes are expected to keep on top of what they're putting into their bodies, and to keep WADA or any other regulatory bodies aware of their conflicts.

My first thought. Hopefully with this press conference, the only "R" word that we should be afraid of seeing is Rivalry.

Also this pretty much guarantees Serena should be 1 or 2 GOAT in Tennis (both in mens and womens) outside of all of her individual accolades in her career. She regularly beat a person who was doping. For almost 10 years.

Edit: Oh, it's just been banned for less than 3 months. Oh poo. Well, better she announces it than be caught in a scandal.

If the drug she has been taking for 10 years just became a banned substance this year then I can't really get riled up over this.

Smart of her to get this out in the open before it leaked and turned into something else.

Not really.

The FDA is real odd about what they allow and don't allow. I had to import certain foods for a while, because I couldn't find equivalents in the United States that didn't contain Red Dye #40, which my child is allergic to. Red Dye #40 is banned in the UK, so finding foods and medications without it was easier overseas. (until Aldi started carrying what I needed. YAY!) My doctor had me getting a certain perscription through the UK because i couldn't find a dye free equivalent here in the states.

Just saying that it's not unusual to get medications not available in the US.
 
I am so happy she is not retiring, I was in tears this morning just thinking about it.

Already expecting people to come up with stupid comparisons with Serena. Nothing new.

What is unusual for me isn't that she manages to obtain that drug, it's that her doctor, who I assume is American, considering she's been living there since her childhood, is prescribing her an obscure latvian drug, one that is usually prescribed to "patients with chronic heart failure".
 
Sportsfans have to wake up to the fact that we're talking about people who will do anything to win.

That's who self selects in pro sports.

Take the blinders off. If money is involved, people are doping.
 
She's the fourteenth athlete to be caught for meldonium this year, three swedish/ethiopian runners, one russian cyclist, two ukrainian biathletes, six georgian wrestlers, one russian figure skater and sharapova. Really impressed by these athletes who are on top of their game while suffering from such serious heart conditions (and sending a thought to Shaparova for having plenty of coaches, physios and doctors not caring enough about her to even bother with opening an email attachment).

Tennis is a joke. Serena hid from a doping test in 2011 by going into her panic room and calling the police when they came to her house. They never got the sample and she received no punishment. She didn't provide a single out of competition test for 2010 and 2011

She took a nootropic that was perfectly allowed and legal for 10 years that just got banned 2 months ago and got caught.

If anything I think it's silly there's not some sort of grace period when it comes to banning previously legal substances like that. It's a definite routine changer to take something for that long and then suddenly be expected to stop it like that, especially if it's not made explicitly clear that the rules regarding the substance are going to be changing with at least some notice. Despite what the 24/7 modern news cycle would like you to believe, not everything always has to be some grand controversy. This one seems pretty cut and dry to me.
 
An antidoping expert on tv is saying that a shit-ton of athletes have tested positive for that drug since the beginning of the year.

Amazing that athletes from all around the world were taking a drug only available in Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Sounds like it's the new Sudafed.
