Bernie Sanders clarifies his statement about ghettos

A ghetto is literally an area where marginalized groups have been isolated or segregated based on historical social, economic, and political policies, yes.

But it's not a place where "African Americans" have been isolated or segregated, specifically.

Yeah I can't really figure out how to get offended from this.

Whats wrong with what he said?

Is this not true?
Pretty much. Maybe it's because I'm not American but I don't understand the outrage at all. What's so embarrassing about it?
It's Pretty in line with David Harvey's definition of ghettos even if he himself has been moving away from the term recently.

For a man involved with civil rights he is woefully ignorant on black people. To sum up African American communities as just "ghettos" is some shit you expect to see the GOP do.

Voters who support Bernie don't care, and those who support Hillary aren't changing their inds this late in the game. This has no effect.

Except for African-American voters who are still undecided, but meh, who cares about them, am I right?

He's not wrong.

Granted, it has meant different things at different places/times, but in modern day America when someone mentions the word ghetto the first thing that pops into many people's minds are poor black communities.

The literal definition is "a section of a city, especially a thickly populated slum area, inhabited predominantly by members of an ethnic or other minority group, often as a result of social or economic restrictions, pressures, or hardships".

People are really grasping at straws IMO.

If people really want to get on him about gaffes, then the "white people can't be poor" is what they should be focusing on.

I find that racist. First thing that pops into my mind is Elvis

Can someone explain why this is offensive to black people to me? He's not saying all black Are poor. If anything to me it sounds like a statement that should be offensive to poor white people since it's ignoring that they are a group that exists

Exactly. There is a good reason to be offended by this, as well as his comment on mental health and Minnesota being "smart" compared to where he lost.

It makes him look out of touch, which is really bad.

At this point... just end this Bernie. Do it so you can maintain some remaining dignity in these proceedings. Winning is impossible, and you don't want to tarnish your image further with "mistakes" like this.

He's won 3 of the last 4 states. I don't think he's going anywhere.

Yeah, I'm seriously befuddled.

But whatever helps my queen is awesome, she can do no wrong. Bernie should drop out. His supporters should join the Queen after.

We deserve the politicians we get then. The biggest cons win the prize.

I'm fine with the politicians we get and incrementally working toward change, since this way actually nets results and has for years. I'm patient.

And I'm also fine not nominating people like Bernie, who isn't even some particularly above the fray candidate or special in any way. He's just propped up to be that way by his supporters.

He doesn't have to go anywhere, but the nomination process is over for Bernie. He has no chance now. So he has to decide how he will leave, with some shred of dignity left, or just creating more scar tissue.

45% of people living in public housing are black and that's a problem he thinks needs to be fixed, but he used a funny word that no one uses anymore so let's ignore his point and make allusions to him being a racist.

Bingo

There is nothing wrong with what he said. But people still point and say oooh that wording's a bit suspect oooo

This is part of why American politics is such a joke where nothing gets done

Heard the quote on Morning Edition when they recapped the debate and it irked me. Was wondering if there was any traction on it and I guess there was.

Except for African-American voters who are still undecided, but meh, who cares about them, am I right?

Is this a significant number of Democratic primary voters? I'd be surprised.

For a man involved with civil rights he is woefully ignorant on black people. To sum up African American communities as just "ghettos" is some shit you expect to see the GOP do.

It reinforces a negative stereotype for sure, which is disappointing. Here in Maryland for instance we have plenty of AA communities that are affluent and not ghettos.

We live in a world where perfect is the mortal enemy of good, I suppose. Bernie you are a racist piece of shit, suspend your campaign immediately.

What do they even teach anymore
My wording was horrible, but I hope you understand that I meant the term was created because of what the nazis did to the Jews in Europe, not America. I may not be the brightest guy, but I'm not so dim as to believe ghettos were invented in the US.

The message that insinuates that Black people are the real experts of living in the ghetto is kinda

I guess, like, I'm not getting that from the quote, because isn't the population of 'ghettos' usually predominantly African American? Sorry if that sounds ignorant.

But he marched with MLK!! Is not that enough!!!!!?

Except for African-American voters who are still undecided, but meh, who cares about them, am I right?

Not sanders, that's for sure.

When your quote AND your clarification comes out as "You know, ghettos. Where black people live." You sound like an insensitive idiot.
Uh is this what people are getting from it?

Sounds like he's actually being super sensible and putting on the table that there's a lot of black communities which are socially and economically segregated both due to horrible city planning and garbage housing projects.

I wasn't looking for him to clarify his definition of the word "ghetto". I was looking for him to clarify what he meant about white people not knowing what it meant to be poor.

While worded poorly, his comments about white people not knowing poverty are sorta true. White families that make 20,000 live in better neighborhoods than black families making 50,000.

I'll be sure to let my white neighbors know they aren't really poor I'm sure they will be thrilled with the news.

This isn't really that big of a deal to me. It's really just a poor unfortunate choice of wordings. Him going back to Wall Street as the answer to every debate question irked me more.

Either way, it's not what he said.

He equivocated "African American communities" and "ghettos". You don't see a problem with that?

Let's see how well he's done in the necessary-to-win Southern states... yep there a significant number.

Sanders hasn't made in-roads among black voters, while he has made sizable increases in his poll numbers among all other groups. I don't think most of those voters are undecided.

But he marched with MLK

Killer Mike will spin it and make it even more terrible.

As I have said many times before, the fact that Killer Mike is able to go up to bat for Bernie, while commendable, is getting grating to the point where I feel he has lost touch with reality.
