An Ohio police officer has been fired by his department after publicly cheering on the suicide of a prominent Ohio Black Lives Matter activist. Fairborn Police Officer Lee Cyr reportedly wrote "Love a happy ending" on the "Ohio Politics" Facebook page two days after MarShawn M. McCarrel II, a well-known local activist, shot and killed himself on the steps of the Ohio Statehouse. Cyr was previously placed on paid leave while the department investigated his social media posting. “[Cyr's] action is in violation of the department’s social media policy and does not conform to the Professional Standards & Core Values established by the organization," the department said via official statement.

I think that when something like this happens, it should immediately trigger an independant review of complaints filed against the officer as well as the cases that officer has been involved with to look for evidence of racial bias.

I also think that there should be some kind of national blacklist to at least alert other precincts of the nature of the termination if not prevent the officer from being hired outright.

Are we going to get a bunch of people telling us to empathize with his loss of career.

He got what was coming to him.

Am I allowed to boo ex officer Lee Cyr? I'm asking before the empathy police come in and tell me who the real victim is.

I agree with both points, OP. I've got a very complicated opinion on the subject of suicide. Regardless, this officer's words are quite despicable. I just don't understand how someone could say such a thing. I'll go ahead and show empathy for the dead young man. The officer will get more than enough from others..

The really sick and twisted thing at the end of this rabbit hole is that cops are usually the first to respond to suicide attempts.

Does anyone actually say this?

Here's an example of this happening in a different circumstance.

Original story: http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-...are-fired-over-deadly-2012-chase-and-shooting

The Cleveland Division of Police has fired Michael Brelo and five other officers over their actions during a high-speed chase in 2012 that ended in the deaths of two unarmed suspects. Brelo was accused of jumping onto the vehicle's hood and firing 15 rounds through its windshield.

The police chase ended in an outburst of gunfire that killed the two people inside the car: Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams.
Last May, Brelo was found not guilty of two counts of voluntary manslaughter — in part, because, as Eyder reported for the Two-Way, it was impossible to determine whose bullets had killed the pair.

Brelo and other officers at the scene were found to have fired 137 rounds in a span of 19.6 seconds. Investigators say he leaped from a police car onto the suspects' car after an initial fusillade of bullets.

[...]

The shooting came after a chase in which officers repeatedly said the people in the car had a weapon, were firing — and were perhaps reloading. Those claims were shown to be erroneous, and the police were criticized for several breaks with protocol during the chase, including a failure to avoid cross-fire situations in the fatal shooting.

Victims were black, btw.

Response of people wanting to paint the fired officers as victims:

My name is Megan and I am raising funds on behalf of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association to benefit 6 career police officers who were terminated yesterday, January 26, 2016.

The CPPA firmly believes that none of these officers deserved to be terminated based on their conduct and the facts of the incident in which they were involved. The CPPA also firmly believes that these officers are being used as pawns in a political game designed to appease vocal critics of the Cleveland Division of Police.

Although the CPPA is fighting to have these officers reinstated and will ultimately be successful, these officers and their families are now faced with the likelihood of financial ruin as the legal process runs its course for months or even years.

Good riddance.

There was a thread where some people were calling for empathy for the racist bigot that got rejected from the Marines for proudly displaying on social media a video where he participates in shoving/assaulting a black protester at a Trump rally.

People ask to empathize with these people for getting their just dues? I get that they should still be treated as humans, but part of that is being held accountable for prejudiced behavior. There really shouldn't be any sympathy for their bigotry.

They do this because they want the same empathy when they are eventually exposed.

It was a 'if you grew up in a racist household/surroundings and knew nothing else, you'd be a racist too!' call for empathy, as though that excuses any sort of accountability.

Bruh, someone basically told me that even the Nazis had some good ideas during Black History Month. Beyond the pale is no longer a place that exists.

They do this because they want the same empathy when they are eventually exposed.

This is an officer from my home town never thought I'd hear about something like this from someone up here how sad and upsetting.

I recognize an unfortunate upbringing might produce less than ideal behavior. But if people truly are locked into the worldview espoused by their immediate environment, it is the responsibility of society at large to re-educate them. Public embarrassment is the natural result of public ignorance. Losing a job is the natural result of displaying incompetence in your line of work. These punishments should not be pitied, they should be encouraged.

What a callous dick. I don't know what else to say other than we don't need people like him supposedly "protecting" us.

This the age of social media....gotta mind what you say and where you say it.

Only way someone thought that would fly is if they were in an insulated environment at work where that banter is normally tolerated...

You guys, we should probably wait for all the evidence to come in before we judge the decision on his firing.

Got what he deserved. Dumbass all around

Of course now the thread is more shit posts about a hypothetical boogeyman coming in to shit up the thread then any actually boogeyman coming in.

Ok, now federalize a database on all employed police officers in the United States and where they work as a police officer.

We don't need any more of this,

"The officer had a history of violence against women and minorities and was being investigated for illicit activity. After leaving the department, he was hired 1 town over without more than a conversation with the Chief. Immediately following, the officer was involved with the shooting of an unarmed black male in which the black male was described as a demon".

How about we stop that now as well.

They need a database but even more importantly they need hiring standards that are enforced. You can bet there are plenty who even with a troubled record will get hired by departments knowing full well about the Officers history simply because you got to stand up for your brothers in blue.

Were you around for the Scalia death thread? What about the deaths of dictators? Are people who oppose fascism allowed to cheer for that without being assholes?

I think there's a huge chasm between taking joy in the death of someone who wielded considerable (and sometimes negative) influence over others and taking joy in the death of some nameless kid who ultimately just wanted to make the world a better place.
