Well, the thought was that tennis authorities were trying to promote a squeaky clean image of the athletes by allowing them to ban themselves from competition (like Nadal every few slams, Serena a few years ago, and Soderling....who never came back). And tennis authorities would suppress results. Big names got the luxury of a cover-up, while other guys (like Cilic, Troicki, Gasquet, etc.) were publicly outted.

I have to admit: when Serena announced that she would be taking a leave of absence, I got a little suspicious. But in light of Maria's situation, it doesn't make sense. She's the highest paid athlete on the women's tour and a household name. She would be one of the biggest candidates for a "silent ban".

I never bought into the silent ban conspiracy, but after so many years of hearing about it, you can't help but wonder.

Tester showed up at 6:00 am, she didn't know who it was so she called the police from her panic room. The rest is from a conservative hit piece. Serena is one of the most tested male or female tennis player. Only 21 out of competition tests were done in all of 2011. They do thousands now, 2014 saw 1139.

Well she only tested positive a month after the drug was banned. She's playing up the ignorance angle, and again the drug was only recently banned. If she gets a light sentence like 3-6 months, then there is no point in dropping her.

If she's banned for something like 4 years than yeah her contract is done. They may even just suspend her pay during the ban.

This is a huge pr stunt probably but I can't help with sorta side with her. Take responsibility get extra testing down for x amount of time and ban her until the us open or something.

They just suspended the relationship actually which probably makes sense. If the situation is more or less like she said it was, then I really doubt they terminate but if there is more to the story that makes it look worse then maybe.

Besides, she didn't really use PED, but rather meds that used to be allowed that for some reason aren't this year.

The whole circuit has Popeye arms and none of them lift. Tennis players are hella suspect, IMO.

It's fair at this point. Have her claims examined then the itf's view and decide the proper course of action.

Tennis will give you strong forearms. Swinging a bracket that hard and fast thousands of times demands and builds a strong grip and arm. Particulalrly in players with one handed backhands their dominant arm becomes much bigger than their off hand. Look at a guy like Federer, his right forearm is much more developed than his left.

You can go back and look at abguy like Rod Laver in the 1960s and see the same thing.

Most tennis players do use weight training in their fitness routines.

Nobody expects Nike to keep paying her that $70M contract when she could be out of tennis for up to 2 years. This is Nike doing the bare minimum to look like they give a shit.

And as they should. They've got too much invested in her at this point.

Isn't the substance used to prevent diabetes and lack of magnesium which Sharapova was experiencing?

It was never confirmed if Serena had taken part in the doping test in 2011 or if she dodged it like some news outlets reported.

Wow. Didn't expect Nike to drop her. She could still take part in the Rio Olympics though...

What a shame.. I am hoping for the best for Sharapova. it has to be difficult for her. It was very silly how she got into this situation but it did happen. A lot of terrible posts in this thread so going to avoid to quote them.

I am going to keep an eye on what is going to happen with her.

They are procedures in place if an she needs a specific drug for legitimate medical condition.

Serena was not blood tested out of competition in 2011, but was test in competition. In 2011 there were only 3 out of competition blood tests performed on female tennis players. Last year, there was 706.

While that particular incident is certainly a reach, if you assume any of these elite athletes are completely and 100% clean, then that's just you being naive.

It's fine to laugh at Maria for this, but to act all "SERENA WOULD NEVER!" is a bit disingenuous.

Anyway their loss, good luck trying to design and sell stuff that Azarenka and Kvitova use.

Hopefully when she is back she starts her own brand or goes to Adidas.

Never, my favorite athlete is squeakily clean. They have nothing to gain by using any kind of performance enhancing drugs. :0
