Maria Sharapova Press Conference. UP: Failed drug test

What a bunch of pricks. Doing this to her yet they did nothing with Pacquiao and Tiger Woods? Double standards much? Good going Nike.

Anyway their loss, good luck trying to design and sell stuff that Azarenka and Kvitova use.

Hopefully when she is back she starts her own brand or goes to Adidas.

It's one thing to own up to doping. It's entirely another to own up to doping while getting completely owned by one person for over a decade.

Show me the drug tests that Tiger Woods and Pacquiao failed.

I'm a guy that believes almost all athletes dope, but Nike is being consistent here. If you're dumb enough to fail a drug test, which are basically jokes and done mostly for PR purposes, you deserve to get the fallout.

Uhm, I am not saying they failed drug tests?

Pacquiao came up with some horrible homophobic statements some weeks(?) ago. Apparently they cut relations with him, but it sure wasnt as fast as Marias. And Woods was involved in many scandals and they were never this swift with him.

I am just saying they should take into consideration that she was the face of Nike Tennis for many years, and literally sustained the brand along with Serena. And most importantly, for their business, even if this is a big controversy now, they wont find someone as marketable as her, and should at least wait until she is judged and things become clearer. Thats all.

Nike cut Pacman instantly. You're really being fast and loose with facts here.

This drug has apparently been rampantly used by Russian federation athletes for some time. It was officially banned in tennis two months ago. If you read what it does to athletic performance, it's not difficult to see why folks use it.

Sharapova got caught. Her excuse sounds laughably thin. The drug doesn't treat pre-diabetic conditions or the flu.

Years of all this bullshit about Serena "obviously" doping and the body-shaming and it was actually Sharapova that got caught. It's not even like she didn't have fair warning either. She probably didn't care.

I was going to wonder if Sharadopa's endorsements would increase after this news considering she's one of the few athletes that makes more money in proportion to how many L's she can catch but this Nike news might be the dawn of a new era.

I think you are the one being loose with facts...

[applications of meldonium] have shown beneficial effects on neurological disorder[15][16] and diabetes.[17]

Re: Nike, my bet is that she will start her own brand with Adidas not too long from now. She's the women's tennis' most valuable player (marketing-wise) and arguably top 5 in the world (including men).

Failing a drug test is pretty serious business for Nike, especially after getting burned by Lance Armstrong.

The rah rah Serena posts in this thread are so cute.

LMAO

While that particular incident is certainly a reach, if you assume any of these elite athletes are completely and 100% clean, then that's just you being naive.

It's fine to laugh at Maria for this, but to act all "SERENA WOULD NEVER!" is a bit disingenuous.

Point out where I ever insinuated that "Serena would never". I'm laughing because she dopes up and still got that ass handed to her like clockwork. It's doubly funny because everyone and their mom was sure the only reason Serena had been tappin that ass was because Serena doped and Sharapova was this pure little angel.

I think you are the one being loose with facts...

Just to make sure I get this straight, did you link to the Wikipedia entry that cites a small sample study of OBESE RATS to support her claim? Peer reviewed? Control group? I clicked the study (which I'm almost positive you didn't) and it tells me nothing.

Is Sharapova legitimately at risk for type 1 diabetes? She isn't in the same time zone for type 2.

This is standard failed dope test protocol. "I didn't know." "My doctor prescribed it for X medical condition that my uncle developed." "I ate some contaminated fish."

Buying the diabetes angle is absurd.

I'm definitely surprised if Nike is cutting here, which they do end up doing like 99% of the time they suspend contracts. I thought a good 15+ year relationship would justify weathering the storm a bit but maybe not.

Then that's not much different from when people laughed at Jan Ulrich when he got busted, innit? Or Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell for a better comp

It's fine to enjoy that out of all people, it's none other than Maria to get clapped. I laughed this whole evening. But Sharapova getting beat while doping isn't any more or less embarrassing than if she were clean.

All jokes aside, it really is horrible for the sport and I am incredibly disappointed in her. Even though love Serena and all of the whippings that she administers to Maria, there's much to admire about Sharapova, too. She takes all of her defeats in stride and even though there is a 900% chance that Serena will beat her, she is one of the few players that was always up for the challenge. She never, ever succumbs to defeat; she will always give 100%, every single match.

Also, it was great watching her come back from her shoulder injury a few years back. She kept progressing and progressing, and finally got back to slam-winning form -- and won RG....TWICE (!!)

Still...this isn't a good look for tennis. Tennis could always pride itself with the fact that none of the top guys ever doped (whether true or not). And with one high-pitched shriek, that image has been shattered.

But another way to look at it is that tennis isn't turning a blind eye to doping. They've long been subjected to the criticism that they aren't taking doping seriously. And that if they are, they show favoritism to the top players. At least this shows that they don't play favorites.

Everyone complains that tennis only bans the small fish. Well....they caught a whale this time. And while it sucks on one hand, it shows that they aren't playing around, which is good for the integrity of the sport.

Welp, looks like Sharapova had notice that the drug she was taking was going to be banned. This article was published September 29, 2015:

On 16 September, the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Executive Committee approved the 2016 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods, which is now available on WADA’s website. The List will come into force on 1 January 2016.
https://www.wada-ama.org/en/media/news/2015-09/wada-publishes-2016-prohibited-list

Link includes the PDF to the updated list. Meldonium, the drug Maria took, is right there on page 4.

Sucks for her.

Nootropics is something Ive always been interested in but ye..just dont want to risk any unknown long term effects.

Its really sad that Athletes are doped to maximise their potential... it completely disregards the fact that theyre human and need to live longer than what their sporting time is.

Serena just like the rest are all tested.

So is Maria, and she didn't fail a test until this year for something she already admitted she's been taking for a decade. Every world class athlete is going to, at best, dance around the lines of what they are and aren't allowed to take. And most will cross if they know they can get away with it. They changed the rules on Maria, and she got caught. Who knows if anyone else (Serena included) won't get caught up next time they change the rules.

LMAO is this for real? She's been importing a drug from Eastern Europe for 10 years, and it "may have been a mistake"?

Cheaters cheat.

Everyone takes PED's. EVERYONE, in every sport. Even in the lower categories.

The difference is if you are smart enough to walk the line without getting burned or not.

Poor Maria, she did nothing wrong, just took some performance enhancing drug which just happened to be banned now because WADA are bad people and don't want her to treat her sickness. Her and other hundreds of athletes worldwide. Especially in Russia there is this epidemic.

This thread is a little cringe isn't it?

I bet far more sports people use peds then we will ever know about. Hope they deal Sharapova how they would with less famous tennis stars.

Heh Russian athletes are getting banned left and right for doping.

I suspect Serena response to this wasn't like that .gif at all, more disappointed and concerned for the sport.

The only surprise is the hundreds of other sport stars across tennis, football etc. haven't been caught. The whole sports industry would implode. Many are better at hiding it and the sports themselves ignore it. Too much self interest.

We need to bans all Russians until we can figure out what the hell is going on.

Years ago I saw a report how many if not most cyclists take asthma medicine legally, which is also performance enhancing. So many sickly young men and women in the pro sports world.
