The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd coming west for PC in 2017

I see little point in buying SC for the time being. I almost got it for the PSP last year, but now that I know that 3rd is a PC-exclusive, I don't see the point in buying the PSP version of SC and I still have to finish FC on PC if I want to get SC there.
Why would you need to finish FC on PC?

And FC & SC tell a self-contained story. 3rd is somewhat more of a bridging game between Trails in the Sky & everything that comes afterwards than something that is absolutely essential like Return of the Kings is essential continuation & conclusion to the story FOTR and TTT started.

I only found out about it now after checking XSEED's twitter account to see if there's a funny post or two. BAH GAWD I didn't expect ANOTHER Trails game announcement. 2015 and 2016 just keep getting better and better. We love you, XSEED.

From what I gather, Falcom had to return their PSP development kit back to Sony -- meaning neither XSEED nor Falcom can help the lack of a PSP version.

I'm not a PC gamer myself, but will gladly make an exception for The 3rd. What helps is that the game's is approximately FC's length -- the two shortest games of the series.

Why is CS II fall though? It seems the localization is pretty far at the moment.
Editing costs a lot of time. The voices are being recorded as we speak, meaning they probably did the editing on those first and all non-voiced lines in the coming months.

Why would you need to finish FC on PC?

And to add to that: why would it be pointless to play SC on PSP?

I think people really overestimate the importance of the save file transfer in these games. The bonuses you get are almost meaningless, this shouldn't prevent anyone from playing one version over the other.

I just woke up to this extremely good news.

Someone (Aeana or whoever), please make the JP voiceover mod for 3rd available for us again! It'll be weird playing with EN voiceover after playing both FC/SC in JP :-)

Can we look forward to yearly release of Kiseki games now? o_0

There are probably at least a couple more months of editing, the programming and QA still needs to be done, then they need to manufacture and ship everything. Still plenty of work to do.

Nice, I finished the first and second chapter just a few weeks ago and I gotta say, they are very good, long games(although not as long as some people told me but maybe that is just me).

And while it is sad for the people who prefer to play on their PSP that it isnt coming out for that platform, it wasn't unexpected even more since they stated it before hand.

Because things take time. They need to record voices and after that is done they need to put those into the game and IIRC there's still some non-voiced dialogue that will need editing and then there's QA that can take its time with a long-ass JRPG like Cold Steel II and then there's Sony's certification process and then there's manufacturing & figuring out logistics etc. While none of those would take too much time by themselves, they accumulate to something that means it'll still take more than 3-4 months for this to hit store shelves.

The bonuses for transferring SC's saves to 3rd are pretty minimal. But if you care that much for it you can just get a 100% save file somewhere.

Yeah, save files are easy enough to download. If that is the biggest thing holding people back from playing TC on PC then it should be a non-issue.

Awesome news. I would have prefered to play it on the Vita, but I knew that there was no chance that the PSP version will get localized so the PC will have to do.

Does anything transfer from SC to 3rd or am I fine jumping from PSP to PC for this game?

Pretty sure SC has the most text in the entire series, by people from XSEED's estimates.

Yep. And 3rd has the least amount of text in the series.

Edit: Wait, I didn't realize your post was in response to Zero. Zero has less text than SC, but you can't do Zero without Ao and both combined have more text than SC.

And on top of this, a lot of these things you mentioned, like putting the finished files into the game proper etc are handled on Falcom's end, which means more time.

That said, I think it should be clear that XSEED has apparently figured out how to localize these games in a way that works for them schedule-wise.

An SC-level catastrophe is probably not ever gonna happen again. Not with this series at least.

Text doesn't necessarily equate to length though, FC has more text than either Cold Steel game.

Last year Tom estimated that if they really pushed for it, they could probably "catch up" with the Japanese releases (including the upcoming Cold Steel 3) in about 5 years.

Doesn't necessarily mean they will do that, but they seem to have a good idea of the scope of each project and how long it would take. I wouldn't be surprised if the biggest hurdle for Crossbell ends up being the need for a viable version to release.

Damn, PC only. Guess I'll buy it on Steam when it launches, I wonder why they couldn't just put it on the psp Vita store front. If they're already doing a PC release, I can't imagine it being too costly to do a PSP Vita release.

I bet this has to be an issue on Sony's side but of course it's just speculation.

Yeah, the lack of a good version of Ao might be the biggest hurdle remaining. They seem to have the translation process figured out.

Zero suffers from the same problem. People write it off because Falcom released Joyoland's PC port in Japanese, but that doesn't guarantee there aren't licensing problems there too.

What.

I played through a chunk of SC in my tablet without any major issues (other than slowdowns in foggy areas), and you and I both know that my tablet is way crappier than yours.
Did you play it with a controller or some other way? I've tried to play FC/SC on my tablet but the game won't respond to my controllers inputs for whatever reason.

Less of an issue with Sony and more just PSP being a deader than dead platform & the PSP versions being a bitch to work on.

Even worse than people acting like spoiled children over this are the people throwing (not so) veiled insults at whoever doesn't want to buy a game for a platform they don't like playing games on.

Anyway, i won't be buying it because realistically I will not play it on the PC (I did it with FC and didn't play more than 30 minutes, until I eventually got it on the Vita. I also bought SC day one on the Vita.), not out of any spiteful "boycott" or whatever silly reason.

I'm glad this game exists and people who like playing it on PC can enjoy it.

It's not a huge deal I just prefer jrpgs like this on handhelds. If Xseed is pulling away from the vita in 2017 then I guess the vita will be dead in 2017.

Where is there evidence of XSEED pulling away from Vita, just because circumstances wouldn't let them do Trails 3rd?

They aren't writing off the Vita. They are writing off the PSP. The version that would even be possible to release on handhelds licensing wise is the PSP edition. Just because BC exists on Vita doesn't mean Sony and Falcom can release it as a Vita title. They have to release it as if it were a PSP title and that simply might not be possible now.

The Vita has been pronounced dead since 2013 lol

But here we are in 2016, still getting niche releases.

The dream lives on! Oh, how we took to those beautiful blue skies~
The hype train lives on! Too bad I can't really use that avatar anymore though, eh.

Now I gotta beat SC!

Say this the day they confirm they're not doing Tokyo Xanadu (which seems doubtful). It's been explained again and again why they wouldn't do 3rd PSP or 3rd Evo.
This doesn't inform their stance on Vita.

Yessssss! Just saw this news. So hyped. I played TotS FC and SC over the holidays and absolutely loved them. So happy this is coming. If they can swing a Cold Steel PC port that would be icing on top.

I'm so happy about that !

... But i wonder why Carpe Fulgur wasn't chosen ? Trails in the Cold Steel wasn't too bad but i kinda though it lacked the "extra Ompf" that First and Second Chapter have.

Maybe just my imagination ?

Huh? Nothing's been said about it yet, but just because nothing's been said yet, people assume they aren't going to do it for some reason.

I think you read that backwards, it's a double negative saying it's likely they will work on Tokyo Xanadu.

Where do you start (and continue) with this franchise? PC only.

Trails in the Sky (aka FC/First Chapter)
Trails in the Sky SC (Second Chapter)
Trails in the Sky the 3rd

That's it so far.

Because XSEED has pretty much have a good plan on localizing these games now so outside companies aren't needed anymore unlike years ago. I would love Carpe Fulgur to work on TC alongside XSEED but I'm not surprised this isn't happening.

Trails in the Sky First Chapter, Trails in the Sky Second Chapter, Trails in the Sky the 3rd (what this thread is about)....

unknown if being localized...Trails of Zero, Trails of Azure

...(these games are PS3/Vita only, CS3 might be PS4) Trails of Cold Steel 1 (came out recently), Trails of Cold Steel 2 (Coming out this fall), Trails of Cold Steel 3 (in development by Falcom.)

CF was only involved in the translation of SC, not FC. They also had a troubled relationship with XSEED. They ended up parting amicably on SC, but it was a whole mess. XSEED did a great post-mortem about the localization of SC. I think it was done with Kotaku. Someone might be able to throw the link in here.

So far in the West, there are two linked but mostly independent stories. They are Trails in the Sky and Trails of Cold Steel. The Sky series is the only one on PC currently, so start with the first game in that. Trails in the Sky FC.
