The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd coming west for PC in 2017

Trails in the Sky First Chapter, Trails in the Sky Second Chapter, Trails in the Sky the 3rd (what this thread is about)....

unknown if being localized...Trails of Zero, Trails of Azure

...(these games are PS3/Vita only, CS3 might be PS4) Trails of Cold Steel 1 (came out recently), Trails of Cold Steel 2 (Coming out this fall), Trails of Cold Steel 3 (in development by Falcom.)

I own a vita, are there any pros or cons to buying it on vita over PS3 or PC?

Where do you start (and continue) with this franchise? PC only.

Trails in the Sky First Chapter -> Second Chapter -> Third once it's released. Those are the only ones available in English & on PC. After those, we might get Trails to Zero & Trails to Azure in 3-4+ years, but nothing is guaranteed. There's also the PS3 & Vita only Trails of Cold Steel I & II (and upcoming III, though its platforms are still unknown).

What do you mean? You mean Cold Steel? CS series is PS3/Vita only, at the moment.

I'd say that the benefit on Vita for me is that I actually really like the touch functions for switching things around, it can make things a bit faster. Performance is slightly worse on Vita, though.

SC has some minor bugs on Vita, but they are identical otherwise. You can definitely play all the currently available Trails games on Vita with little issue.

The Third won't be coming there, so you'll have to play that one on a PC if you're interested. There is a Save Import function you'd miss there, but all it unlocks are bonus items really.

I see little point in buying SC for the time being. I almost got it for the PSP last year, but now that I know that 3rd is a PC-exclusive, I don't see the point in buying the PSP version of SC and I still have to finish FC on PC if I want to get SC there.

The import bonuses in these games are insignificant, there's not really much reason to avoid switching platforms in between games. I wouldn't go out of my way to make sure I played them all on the same platform.

Cold Steel? It sounds like the PS3 version is very slightly better (IIRC, Vita has some minor framerate issues and longer loading times?). Seems like you would be better off making deciding whether you want to play it on a portable or a TV.

Don't know if that applies to Cold Steel 2 or not.

Great to see it coming but disappointed by some of the harsh reactions. It was probably on Falcom to get it out on PS3 or PSP, and they couldn't wing either.

Vita meanwhile seems to continue to be the clusterfuck that it has been.

And to add to that: why would it be pointless to play SC on PSP?

I think people really overestimate the importance of the save file transfer in these games. The bonuses you get are almost meaningless, this shouldn't prevent anyone from playing one version over the other.

Further I think a lot of people are equating 3rd as the final game in a trilogy when it's really just an epilogue.

I'm seriously happy that 3rd is coming. I had pretty much given up on this when SC sold unexpectedly low.

It's gonna be Day 1 for me :D

Sounds like I may go PC with the sky games and vita with cold steel. Thank you all for the advice.

I don't even think I used my import bonus items in SC they were so insignificant.

It's an epilogue starring a side character from SC that is meant to bridge it to Ao/Zero and Cold Steel. It almost exists more for the story of that one character and for the future games than it does for the previous Sky games. Those are really done.

PS3 is on Sony unless they've changed policies. PSP is on the PSP versions being horrible to work on and possibly due to the platform simply being so far dead that not even Falcom can or wants to do much with it.

Not sure what Vita has to do with anything. Unless you mean the Vita Evo versions that are, indeed, a licensing clusterfuck.

Really glad this is getting localized. I was planning to get the PSP and Vita games but I'm going to go PC-only for the whole series if there's no Vita version of The Third.

Did you play it with a controller or some other way? I've tried to play FC/SC on my tablet but the game won't respond to my controllers inputs for whatever reason.

Bluetooth keyboard. No touch input whatsoever, sadly (and yes, I tried playing only with mouse/touch controls before using the KB)

"We weren't originally going to jump into 3rd quite this quickly, but the game had so many advocates among the XSEED staff (Brittany and Sara being the biggest, along with our Cold Steel translator who was very psyched to be able to work on it) that we pushed ahead with it sooner than anyone even internally really expected us to.

Like Return to PopoloCrois was for me, this is practically a passion project for the people working on it, so no time was wasted in getting the ball rolling.

You know who to thank! :D

The more we here about the inner workings of XSEED, the more it's clear to me how much of a fan of their own stuff they are. They clearly are a company who really dig the projects they're working on and really want to do the best they possibly can with the resources they have. Keep up the good work, guys! You've got my cash coming for any Kiseki products you'd like to bring over.

Huh? Nothing's been said about it yet, but just because nothing's been said yet, people assume they aren't going to do it for some reason.
I'm absolutely assuming they will do it. It's just that it's ridiculous to take TITS 3rd, of all games, as an example of a lack of Vita support.

Great news, also the greatest praise I can give to the localization is despite being capable of reading Japanese I still find myself waiting for the English releases(so far).

It might change if my patience isn't strong enough for Zero and Ao/CS III. (I was pondering about CS II as well but since Dark Souls III is on the horizon I told myself I can wait a few months.)
Great job to everyone involved.

I've seen some people who have played both the Japanese and English releases say they preferred XSEED's releases to Falcom's original writing. So they must be doing something right.

Well this is awesome. Guess they're happy enough with SC PC sales or confident enough in the long term sales. With some discounts and maybe bundles I'm sure it'll do fine in the long run. Steam games do have a longer tail than console games.

Thanks XSEED for bringing this.

I can totally see that. Given I haven't really tried the Japanese versions yet to really compare but dunno I'm the kind of person that a lot of times actually prefers the original.

And when I play a localized version and I'm really into it that's usually a really good sign for me. There haven't been that many games where I've gotten that feeling.

Really the only thing for me are the voices(not quite into those) but I just play with voices of and it's all fine and dandy.

If you're playing on PC you can swap some files around and get Japanese VO. Hell, you can unlock the ability to swap between both languages at any time in-game. Unfortunately, it's not something that's officially supported by Xseed.

It's only for battles so it's not that big of a deal, though.

damn =/ i have a vita tv, but my notebook sux
cant play any pc game =(

digital only for vita would be nice =(

How old is it? You might be surprised, remember that the Trails games were originally released in the mid-2000s and were designed for lower end hardware even then.

If your PC was made after the late 90s you can handle these games.
I'm not joking around the requirements for these games are incredibly low

I have a hard time believing your notebook has less processing capabilities than a Pentium III processor from the last millenium.
The Falcom games on steam run on anything.

Yeah was more about Cold Steel I tried but wasn't my thing. But it's ok because I was used to playing Trails games without voices anyway.

And it's also to no fault of the English cast it's a me thing I just can't stand it if something doesn't match up in my head.

well i played the first one in the notebook, but after 10 minutes the notebook overheats =/

bought it in 2010

Ok if it's a 2010 netbook I might believe you somewhat. However, you could probably still get around the overheating part by cleaning the insides of your laptop.
Or go get a Pentium 4 PC from the dumpster or something. It'll run the game fine.

One things that kinda worries me is the continuity for the people who buy the game. I'll play them anywhere but I also know many won't. For example as this thread has shown people have played the first two Sky games on PSP/Vita and they'll be forced to go to PC to continue with 3rd and the Crossbell games if they come over. Not a problem for PC owners but is for those who primarily Playstation gamers.

However then we have Cold Steel trilogy that are only on PlayStation at this point, and the games following will also likely be on PlayStation. Now this time PC players hit the roadblock and won't be able to continue with the game. Kind of like how all the Ys games are on Steam, except when Falcom went Playstation starting from Ys Seven, then Celceta and soon VIII. So whichever way you look at it wither platform base won't be able to experience the series properly. This is counter productive to the overall health and sucess of their franchises

Now the easy answer is for said player to not play exclusively on PC or Playstation. That's what I'm doing. Played Sky FC and SC on Vita, will play 3rd on PC and any localised Crossbell games as well, have already played Cold Steel on PlayStation and will likely get the rest there as well. As far as I'm concerned it's the games that matter, the platforms are just a means to an end.

But it would be so much better if both bases could have access to the entire series. But for that to happen the requirements would be for the Cold Steel arc to be ported to PC as well as future games, and the Sky Trilogy and Crossbell duo made for PS4. But then Xseed don't have the resources for something like that. It would need to be Falcom who does so. But would they have either the willingness, foresight or even resources to do so? Or are they just happy with what they get in Japan?

There was an interview recently where Kondo said they were willing to work with someone for ports, but implied they didn't have the manpower or resources to do it themselves.

I wouldn't count on it ever happening, I don't see Falcom funding ports that would be pointless for the Japanese market (they didn't even bother with Ao PC after releasing the Zero port in Japanese). And I don't see XSEED paying for ports of the Cold Steel games.

Franchises are released across several platforms all the time, that's very common. Why is that an issue for this series more than any other? It's very rare to have all titles of a long series available on one system.

It's not like a PS3 or Vita TV is prohibitively expensive these days

Hopefully this doesn't bomb like SC did. It seems like cold steel is their best selling one in the west and that might be because of the school settings. I don't think this one is gonna do all that well especially going by SC steam sells and that was on more than just PC.

I know for a fact we better get the crossbell games on vita or I'll riot.

That's what I'm worried about, how are we going to get Ao?

I NEED AO.

Even if by some miracle of a chance this were going to go to be released on PSP as well, would people expect the same of Zero/Ao if they announced those? I mean at some point it's time to understand that the system just is not capable of supporting releases anymore and it's bad for business for a company to continue with releases. I'd rather not see this company come anywhere close to dying again because they released bomb after bomb to appease the handful of fans who just would not give up their dead platform.

THIRST QUENCHED...AGAIN!

I'm really stoked we're getting this despite the format jumping around (which as I understand it was a problem back 10 years ago overseas as well), but now we gotta do what we gotta do on our end (raw, naked shilling, sending Sara and them good vibes, etc). :P

No Japanese voices, sorry! As with FC and SC, 3rd will include English voices only, as once again, the rights to the Japanese voices were not available. (Wait'll you hear the English voice for Gilbert, though -- sooooooo good!)

Further people seem to be treating PSP and Vita as if they are the same platform. The series is already on its third platform switch at this point.

Can we stop with the "SC bombed"? It'll continue to sell and do fine. XSEED has said so themselves multiple times, they obviously arent only focusing on short term profit when it comes to this franchise.

This has been the story ever since SC released. " Oh no it bombed (because XSEED did mistake x y and z) we'll never get 3rd."

Now we're getting 3rd and people still keep saying the same thing.

The main reason SC sold so poorly is the price. A ton of people bought the first game on the PC and haven't had time or the will to finish the first game which really needs to be done before moving on to the second game - I am in that boat. I would have bought SC even without playing the first game just to have it as part of my collection for when I get around to both games, but not at $27-30. It should have launched at $20 on the PC which would have made it $14 with the 30% discount today and it would have seen a ton more sales. Vita/PSP owners tend to be more hardcore JRPGs players and willing to shell out $30-40 for such games, PC players will jump in when the price is more like $15.

Pretty much. Budget PC gaming and PS3/Vita aren't very expensive. This amount of platform jumping to play a series is nothing compared to what Kingdom Hearts fans had to do.

The price is fine. You don't need to sell the game at a discount to people who won't even play it from the very beggining. That can happen years down the line with big discounts.

People who played FC bought SC at full price, selling it for cheaper would have lost them money.

Bigger numbers on steamspy don't mean anything when you sell your game for 50% less

I never said we'll never get anything, and its still not a good look for games to not sell well either. I want them to get the most profit they can especially since they aren't a charity.

Makes sense, but people usually buy games anyway to support them. It usually happens with the atelier games anyway.
