Star Citizen Alpha 2.0 | The 'Verse Awakens

True true, I grabbed 3 120GB Evo 850s when they were on sale. 1 is my OS drive, and I set the other two up as a RAID 0 stripe. Have and older 80GB Intel SSD as my swap drive, and a 2TB HDD for less demanding games.

I just bought the 250gb Evo 850 yesterday to put star citizen on, its currently on a WD black 1tb. Il try and time both to see the difference.

I sure hope you don't keep anything important on the RAID 0 drives.

Grabbed two 250GB 840 Evos when my ancient 120GB OCZ system drive bit the dust. Conveniently they were on closeout at the time. Used one for system and one for games. Converted my 8 drive raid 0 gaming partition over to more raid 6 storage and never looked back. Purchased a 500GB 850 Evo later on to keep more game options in rotation. My HDDs are purely backup and media storage these days.

Speaking of which, I'm running out of space on those spinners. Either need to start burning some stuff off to BDR or getting more drives. 15TB of capacity, and still nowhere near enough. -_- Think I need to invest in some of those 8TB SMR drives.

Games. I have been running RAID 0 setups on different HDD and now SSD setups for over 8-9 years and never had an issue. Anything important I keep a backup off offline, in the cloud, or on my RAID 6 SAS HP G9 Server Setup.

My work buys HP D2600s like candy. 4 stacks with RAID 6 and have yourself 72TB that will hold for a good while. Or 144TB if you are willing to put up with a little bit slower SAS access times.

Defrag? Still running spinning platters for a system / game drive?

An ... an ... an HDD for games?

UEE officers, please escort this gentleman to the brig.

=(

Yes, I have a single 500GB hard drive, and the fridge is getting full with about 93 GB left. The defragger gave a warning about the drive's health, too — I've been using it for about five years now. So I'm thinking about getting a new 1 TB drive and cloning everything over.

I've given thought to buying an SSD basically just for Star Citizen, but of course I don't know how large the game eventually will be. Would a 120 GB drive be sufficient? Maybe for this year, but probably not next year. Would 256 GB do it? Should I just get a 500 GB one and throw multiple games on there? I'm indecisive.

And money is an object, haha.

Star Citizen takes a long time to load even on an SSD, i can't even fathom what it takes on spinning disk.

SSDs? Do you even m.2??

M.2 is just a connector the same way a Sata is a connector, and regardless which connector you use for SSD you get a massive improvement in access times and IOPS count over HDD.

I've looked into the server rack disk enclosures before for a potential NAS solution, but the cost is more than I'm willing to spend, and the noise factor would be unacceptable. I'd sooner DIY a setup that's more in tune with my needs than go down that route. Even that's still more expensive than I'm willing to invest at this point, however. The cheapest option is just to get off my ass and start archiving things to BDR. Just takes so long to burn all those discs lol.

If your drive is throwing up SMART parameters being out of the safe zone, get a new one ASAP. In the interim make sure everything you need is backed up to the cloud. Anecdotally, there generally isn't much time between the warning signs and full drive failure.

SSD wise, I really wouldn't invest in a 120GB one these days. Get a 250 at least. Not only does the larger drive give more flexibility, but it'll last longer. (From a wear leveling and writes before failure standpoint.)

Compared to back in the day, Star Citizen loads like lightning. Used to literally be like 5 minutes just to get into the hangar.

Fly free again. Starting today through March 20. All ships are up to try out this time.

Need to see some epic, server load crushing battles with 12 vs 12 RETALIATOR brawl.

Given you wouldn't be able to fully crew them (to my understanding of the server population cap at least), what's the point?

You could just want to see what happens when such large, geometrically complex ships converge within view.

Computer 'splosion.

The new ships are pretty efficient geometry wise. The old Constellation model would probably cause more problems by itself in the hangar. ;)

Giant Space Spears jousting in the PU!
I'm going to have to quit the GAF org so I can start up a Space Jousting League. Obviously there's a demand for this!

Can get into the hangar in less than a minute on my wd blue, the recent update seems to have improved loading times substantially

I was bored so I tried. From main screen to hangar. (self-landing, with: Sabre, 350R, Xi'An, Constellation Aquila, Merlin, Redeemer, Freelancer, and (Fish tank, posters, Greycat, ect) 22 Seconds.

Damn, that's good and on my end it only had to load my lonely mustang.

Which brings me to my next point. I took the gladius out for a spin, oh my. It would be silly to buy another ship this early in the game, right? Walk me back guys.

Gladius is a lot of fun! Try the "new" version of it too the Sabre.

One of us, one of us ;)

haven't booted it up in ages, very impressed by the boost in image quality in the hangar (interior of this ship looks stunning too), before there were so many jaggies, much better now! also runs better , 4k high averaging 35fps , the universe main square still drops to 25 but that's a task for pascal

I installed this on my HDD cause at the time my SSD was rather full.

How simple would it be to install it on my SSD? Do I have to redownload everything?

If you have the latest version, just drag and drop the CIG folder and run the launcher from it.

That should probably work.

Good call! If you run into any issues just run the verify option in the launcher that should fix it. I have used this with the PTU to Live and it works pretty well.

I'll jump in and test this out on my 970 later, will confirm it if I can replicate problem.
I at least hope everyone gets the same problem!
Contributed. Make a reddit post. This is an exemplary report and it should get plenty of traction given that lot is always complaining about the lack of AA.

Thanks mate. I think I will make a reddit post in the "morning" (why am I up at this hour? what is wrong with me?!)

Also, good guy raticus ghosting this thread and contributing like a champ. I see you there.

Yea, I had no doubt given your history. Just wouldn't feel right if I hadn't tested it. Contributed.

Got a kick out of this part of your video:

Nice to see they finally got the landing lights in the R&Y hangar to light up my phoenix properly. It previously left out most of the engines. Quick little clip for the bug report: https://youtu.be/rsdLnMGYBH4

Saving that GIF

edit: omg at that first comment and downvote due to having no idea what you are talking about. Why do I bother?

Yeah, I have to laugh whenever I see someone get into a technical argument with you there. One of the weaknesses of reddit is it's easy for a thread to be buried if the first person to see it downvotes it. People follow the leader on an already downvoted issue and it disappears from the front page quickly. Looks like it'll be ok now.

Edit: up to 9 reproductions now, nice.

Thx for the comments and repros guys (tuxfool, chipanpoe, aztec, raticus)

Now why wonder why devs have even researched AA techniques through those last 20 years, they should just use higher res all along!

Don't forget to cite your system specs when claiming 3x3 is greater than 3+3.

Sometimes I think to myself "god damn is GAF pissing me off". It pales in comparison to that which we are witnessing. There are no mods to ban ignorance like that on the SC-sub.

Also god damn. I guess a lot of people keep downvoting it.
Jittering intensifies.
lol

Either people have extremely nuanced and informed opinions about anti-aliasing and the nature of issue council reports, or well... yeah. You know.

I'm interested in trying this game out while it's free to try. Does anyone know the approximate download size of the game right now?

EDIT: Nevermind, it's ~28 GB.

I know Squadron 42's launch is at least 18 months away, more likely 3 years away, but I'd like to put forward my candidature for making the OT.

I promise it'll be everything you dreamed of. I'll make Star Citizen great again.
These might or might not be election promises.

I am very much so cool with it if you want to do it :D hhah

Well, I'm not saying it should be me*, but it should at least be someone that'll make it nerd-jargon-free and understandable for people other than Zalusithix, KKR00, tuxfool and you.

*that's exactly what I'm saying

I can do it too. Since I don't have any free time do something remotely related to gaming and the game will never release anyway, it makes me feel like I'm still active without having to actually do something.
jk

Sure, I wouldn't have the time to do it justice.

Dictator's Tech Corner would make an interesting section at least.

Just updated the free flight section in case anyone's still reading the OP.
