Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

Yeah you definitely appear to not understand. I'm talking about third party games going forward period.

If the developer is okay with cross platform play, and Microsoft is okay with it, then there is only one other party acting as a hurdle in this equation. It's not rocket science.
The hurdle was Microsofts policy. It is now gone

On a totally unrelated note: Heartstone console version might as well be reality.

Sorry to sound so redundant, but is this exactly what it sounds like? Multiplatform multiplayer? I know it sucks that I have to ask, but I want direct confirmation before I get my hopes up.

Short answer: Yes.

Sony has been fine with cross play for ages now, why would you expect them to change now?

Yet you miss one caveat to your argument...

So it is up to Sony to play ball, even if there is a catch with MSFT and their control of it being on their servers only?

Got it.

This is huge and I hope every developer jumps on board. No more worrying about dead lobbies in older games because the numbers will be a lot larger thanks to this.

This is a good move for Microsoft. They were obviously hoping for people to use Xbox Live and Azure for cross-platform needs, but that didn't happen. And their policy was causing them to miss out on games.

I think the entire reason games like Dead Star and Paragon are de facto exclusives on PS4 is because Microsoft wouldn't allow cross-platform play not on their network. It'll be interesting to see if these games get announced for Xbox One now.

Why should it? It will use whatever servers the third party wishes to use and XBL/PSN will just authenticate.

I'm just assuming that is the stipulation MS will use. They need to get something out of this and their server side of the company is expanding and becoming a monsterous business for them.

I could be wrong of course I'm just guessing thats what the requirement will be. Which isn't really that huge of a deal as the Azure servers are legit.

yes, well it basically means that if devs want to do it, MS will allow it.

I don't want to sound repetitive, but will this apply to every PC game that will ask for it, or will this apply to every PC game that will be released via Win10 Store/UWP only?
Has this been clarified?

So in Rocket League, PC players will have to choose between playing with Xbox Live players or PSN players? Obviously you can't have a game with a PSN player, XBL player, and Steam player all in the same game unless Sony agrees as well? And then what happens to console exclusive content? I'm sure Sony wouldn't want Halo's vehicle showing up on their console right?

How does this benefit Sony? When there were calls for this last generation, it didn't happen because Microsoft had a huge lead in console sales and there would've been no benefit to Microsoft opening up their network. Now that they're behind, they want to open it up, but maybe Sony won't want that anymore.

Also publicly coming out and announcing this without having Sony on board makes me feel like they may have already talked to Sony and Sony said no, so now they're getting this out here to force the public to convince Sony? If so, that's a really well played move by Microsoft. I'm just not so convinced Sony just agrees like most people here are assuming.

On cross network play: gamers want more people to play with. We're enabling that and giving devs bigger MP pools

I like how he tries to frame it as it was something they, by their good grace, allowed it and not something many has been asking for and critiqued them for. But it's a good wording. Winder how many missed it.

I posted a "your move Sony, or similar", but it wasn't a silly gloating post - I am genuinely exited and I REALLY want the PS4 player base there too!

The only thing we have is from SE saying that they didn't want to split their player base. This can be interpreted as Sony was OK with it but not MS. It can also mean nothing.

I have a feeling MS is going to kill the Xbox slowly.

They have established franchises and they will make money off them as much as possible.

Something is not right. I am guess they know they will never be the top dog in home console business.

...Why does GAF hate context so much?

I was responding to a discussion where someone was implying they don't see how this means there will be cross play with other consoles since it's still up to Sony. I never said they wouldn't.

Bullshit.

This bit from the article is interesting:

Just checked the website for the game and saw this:

•The ultimate multiplayer experience: Play cross-platform on Nintendo 3DS™, Wii U, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch & Android devices.

Looks like Sony rejected the invitation for Nintendo Network/PSN cross platform play, then. And only the Nintendo and iOS/Android versions support cross platform multiplayer -- PSN is strictly PS devices only.

Worth noting as far as Rocket League on Xbox One will go to supporting multiplayer with PS4 players (so far an invitation has been sent out, much like how one was for Pure Chess on Wii U). Though the publicity of this might cause Sony to change their mind - this is out in the open, whereas barely anyone knew Nintendo Network supported it.

As I mentioned earlier, it's not in Sony's interests to lessen the sales the leverage they can pull to sell PS4s to those who want to play with other PS4 owners -- and there are more of those than XBO owners.
New 4K Sony TVs are Android TV and I suspect that Sony will allow cross play with the PS4. It then would be an artificial barrier if they don't allow the PS4 cross play with other Android/NX/ ARM game consoles. Sony has plans, I believe, to allow the PS4 to support Playready ND and media sharing over the home network with iOS and Android platforms; Phones, Tablets, TVs, STBs...likely UHD Blu-ray digital bridge too. Game and Media sharing over the home network and outside possibly with DTCP+.

This Playready, Playready ND, Vidipath sharing is I think part of the Microsoft-Sony.com domain registration that happened within weeks of Sony choosing Playready DRM for all their platforms (June 2011).

This is exactly what has happened all gen with Sony. Microsoft was not playing ball. I don't get how you can flip the script here.

You can listen to podcasts or read articles that have said Sony doesn't care about cross platform it's always been Microsof that said NO.

Now that Microsoft says ok we allow it, you look like an idiot when you say OK Sony don't be a hurdle!! It's either for the gamers or for Sony.

Also until we know the details we can't say if Sony is on board. There could be some kind of weird demands Microsoft needs for this entire thing.

All im saying is it's a good time to be a gamer let's celebrate together but for fucks sake stop with with " your move Sony" shit. It's playing right into microsoft marketing with this.

So awesome. Microsoft has been quite awesome lately on all fronts (well, maybe not the Windows Store front)
Only thing bothering me is that it didn't happen until now

It's over, period. Sony lost their last ace, and that's the end of their PS4 hopes and dreams.

It's not hyperbole, it's not fanboy drivel. It is LITERALLY it for PS4. Sony has nothing left, nothing they can reveal tomorrow would fix the hole now created. There is no reason left for any one, hardcore or casual, to substantively invest in a PS4. Except if they want to play SF5. Which will also come to Xbone at some point.

The age of Sony is done.

Nah I don't think they are killing Xbox. Just that they are transitioning away from the idea of a traditional console cycle.

There is evidence for it everywhere now.

If MS uses that stipulation they might as well call this non-news and fuck-off.

What's stopping Sony from signing a deal with Amazon for exclusive rights to server access and basically take the same stance. In short, nothing.

Just cause MS has a server farm doesn't mean jack bleep. By the stroke of a pen Sony can do the same with a " licensed partner provider (Amazon or whomever)" to ensure the best experience™ for our players paying for PS+ when it comes to cross-platform play w/ Xbox. Third parties pay Amazon, Sony takes a cut.

I wouldn't say I would be surprised if this were true, MS is dumb at times but I don't think that'll be the case here - that'll be too dumb.

It doesn't work that way when Microsoft has been against cross platform full stop and Sony hasn't. Now that Microsoft is on board you can't ask for Sony examples of Microsoft cross platforms lol

Wtf guys come on

Yeah it's ridiculous and if developers wanted to do it we would have seen more games with it PS4/PC cross play.

What Microsoft is getting out of this is a larger player base for their own players, along with good will of gamers (as you can see in this thread). The increased player base is especially important for the console that's selling less.

For example, Battlefront has over double the amount of players playing on PS4 (31k) right now vs XB1 (14k). If Microsoft were able to access those additional 31k players, that only benefits their users. Maybe it convinces others to buy it on XB1 instead of just buying it on the console their friends get it on.

tbh if they do open it up 3 ways
and Psyonix fix that stupid bug that removed my Warthog
then I am going to play every game with it so PSN players know they're up against an XBox gamer. Adds a bit more spice to the game.

Now, will Psyonix add "XBOX FTW" and "PS FTW" to the d pad please??

Sony already does it.
Is that really news to some of you?
I didn't realize. Thanks. Just read more about it. It makes sense for Sony. Their future plans all involve their games in all platforms and PSNOW to be playing in all forms. I just didn't pay attention enough lol
