Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

Cross platform play doesn't really do much for me unless there is an easy/convenient way to party up with people from other platforms, which I'm not holding my breathe for, so that I can easily play games with friends/family who have Bones. Aside from that, all it does is expand the userbase with a bunch of people I don't know, which I guess is nice but not really a tangible benefit for me.

I wonder if this actually makes it easier for platform holders because wouldn't the publishers be carrying the weight to make cross network play happen as they need to serve it under the their own set up not Microsoft or Sony who just connect to it. Less work for platform holders ? Maybe a downside, publisher dictates how long a game is online, supported etc.

Devs who are making MMOs and online-only multiplayer games should be extremely happy about this. Shit, the creators of Evolve are probably dancing in their studio from this news knowing their game could have some extended life.

Don't expect this anytime soon. Certainly not for anything released already. I want to be as optimistic as everybody on here but...

I think the wording in the announcement link is odd. I truely think they are trying to cut out Steam. Not so much make it open for PSN. The other Networks might include SteamWorks.

Example Rocket league. Steam version is cross play with PS4. W10 App version is Xbox live enabled, so they can't play with steam, instead they have cross play with XB1. And open invitation is there for PSN and Steamworks but we don't know what kind of licences are required or if their are costs.

Holy shit. Never thought I'd see the day. What a crazy turn around from the MS we knew just before the xbone launch.

Your move now, Sony.

Boy that feels weird to say.

All Im asking for is an article or quote that says Sony has always been open to Xbox cross play. To my understanding, they are open to PC/PS4 cross play, but I've always just assumed that they would be open to Xbox cross play.

With them leading the market significantly, I expect some hesitation.

Them leading it's still a great value to them beside they already accepted cross play with Wii U.

So why not with microsoft?Fan rivalries? It's a big plus for everyone from players to Sony and MS.

Rocket league. It will use whatever servers Psyonix uses atm.

hmmm...

I'm still not jumping the hype train yet.

Is this a Windows/Xbox exclusive feature to undermine Steam? This sounds like a very slick trick to sway people over to Windows gaming. I know everyone's warm and fuzzy, but this isn't some random kind gesture to gamers. This is a calculated move to propel Windows gaming.

Am I wrong on this?

What W10 App? Didn't they say initially that why they didn't have PC/Xbox crossplay because they'd need a separate (W10) version to support it?

No we do not.

Rocket League may be using Azure for the PC/Xbox communication, you do NOT know this, and more than likely they are.

Then the question remains, does Sony or Nintendo for that matter, have to use Azure to work with MSFT's terms as well?

Exactly.

So your speculating that Psyonix is going to update both the PC and Xbox versions to support Azure, with the PC version actually being modified to support both Azure and Amazon so as to facilitate cross-play.

I guess it's possible. But doesn't make much sense. MS Xbox live API already allows for the use of 3rd party servers. Simply giving the OK for devs to handle traffic originating from Xbox as they please seems like the easiest course of action, and most effective course of action.

We'll see I guess...

They are saying they are opening this up for games on Steam or any other network. It's right there in the OP

players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.

This is perfect for a game like Titanfall 2

already showed this excitement in the rocket league thread, but holy fuck. this is a turning point for the video game industry overall

edit: just took a better look at the OP...PsN not confirmed?

Psyonix have stated many times they don't want to put a different Rocket League version on Windows 10 Store for Xbox One crossplay. I don't think they're releasing any additional PC versions

Another quote from Corey:

It's unfortunately poor wording. They're trying to say that Xbox Live users - both on Xboxes and Win10 (app store) - can now play against other platforms in MP games.

There's no Win10/GFWL type restriction involved. Our steam client will matchmake against Xbox One, and private match, etc. the same way PC/PS4 works today. News on other platforms still pending obviously.

Is DeepEnigma trolling?

He makes up some nonsense about cross play requiring azure with absolutely nothing to back up his claims then asks you to prove it doesn't? you're the one that brought up azure being a requirement, how about you prove that's a requirement if you're going to spew that shit out? the onus is on you here to back up your claims, not for others to disprove them.

Are you seriously saying that companies act in their own self interest to maximize profits? Waaawawawaw????

Seriously i'm getting trolly but this whole thing is getting out of hand. Microsoft made this change to better their image/build their platform and the only reason ps4 isn't approved for rocket league yet is they have to talk to sony. Otherwise they wouldn't say " with information regarding other platforms coming soon" There is only one other platform

Hmm. So what happens to the PSN users that were playing with PC users? Have they said how the game picks? I'm not mistaken am I, Rocket league already allowed for cross play from Steam to PS4 didn't it?

Edit: I know this is all just announced. I don't know why I'm so hesitant and sceptical.

Edit x2: that quote...

That adds some clarification. Less reason to be so sceptical.

I am asking questions, due to how they were in the past.

So asking questions and speculating with very thin information other and one sentence statements, and 'more info coming in the future' is trolling?

I swear man.

Good news. Will the Win Store client work with Steam as well then? I assume yes after this.

Holy fucking shit. Im so excited for this. This is what I wished when I stupidly bought a 360 for COD in a PS3 dominated country.

He asked a question, he didn't make something up and pass it as the truth. You understand how questions work don't you?

we also had this news yesterday about cross-play with Gears UE Win10/XB1

https://gearsofwar.com/en-us/forums...8579-c73b-49df-8a7d-cc76de6d83c4/posts?page=1

Ah this is excellent news. Yeah my understanding was always that crossplatform play was always coming even on shooters...and would just allow players to choose if they wanted to be matched against those with other control types. Brand new platform with first multiplayer game...its basically a paid test for their service.

It's still gonna be limited.

Rocket league for instance has no cross platform chat, text or voice, no console branded cars. Plus who gonna want to play RTS or FPS against PC players?

I cannot imagine this helping much at all with the decision of what console to buy.

Sure, and without a doubt PC players will have the advantage when it comes to fps, or getting rid of stupid graphic effects so you can see your enemies faster.

But. Some games like Trackmania & Co. or MMOs could be fun as hell.

I'm not sure why people are thinking XB1/PS4 cross-platform play can't happen, unless MS is lying about allowing true cross-platform play and sticking on other requirements like W10 integration.

FFXI allowed PS2 and 360 players to play together when MS was making exceptions to their rules to gain marketshare, FFXIV didn't come to XB1 only because of MS's policies on cross-platform play:

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida hinted in the past at the possibility of an Xbox One port of the game, so today I asked about it during an interview at Gamescom.

Yoshida-san mentioned that he’s ready to create an Xbox One version at any time, as soon as Microsoft accepts the ability to play on cross-platform servers...

Yoshida-san mentioned that he personally thinks Microsoft wants exclusive content for its own community, and while he understand that it might be good from a business point of view, from a gamer’s point of view it’s better to have the content on as many platforms as possible, and people want to be able to play with their friends.

He also added that he even asked if it was possible to at least have the Xbox One version and the Windows version together on the same servers, but Microsoft didn’t accept even that solution, so they seem quite determined to keep things locked for the moment.

And of course, Nintendo has OK'd cross-platform play and games play with Sony platforms just fine. So, according to the information we have:

- Xbox and PS ecosystems have interacted in the past, before MS fully instituted it's walled garden approach.
- Sony currently allows cross-platform play with other consoles.
- MS appears to have changed their policy about cross-platform play, allowing any platform to interact with their box.

Assuming MS isn't lying, cross-platform play is inevitable for the devs that want to use it.

EDIT: Yeah, and according to that Reddit thing, it looks like MS isn't lying.

EDIT 2: Upon further review, I can't confirm any Nintendo games that currently support CPP with Sony platforms, so that might be a torpedo in my reasoning.

Wow.

Being on the losing side really does change you, hm?

This is something that Microsoft would never dream to do during the 360 years.

But now, with the Xbox One failing to gain traction and games that are not AAA blockbusters failing to retain a decent multiplayer pool not even a month after release... This was the only way out.

For us, it's great news. I doubt we'll see cross play between XBO and PS4 anytime soon, specially since Microsoft and Sony will have to iron out a lot of kinks for both networks to work together (and personally, I don't know if it even interests Sony - Just like it didn't MS last gen).

But... having cross play with PC already opens a lot of doors.

That is why you are still a Padawan.

This is too good to be true. I just got a feeling that this may not come to fruition. This is MS cross-network play, meaning it's their program / software. They are inviting others to 'join' in, but I doubt other consoles (like Sony) will like this and I honestly don't blame them. That means everything is on MS turf. I also think it's another plot device to say, "Oh we support cross-play, but other consoles don't want to play ball" when in fact the ball is in MS court.

I'm going to be optimistic tho.

Glad to hear this, though I don't use my Xbox much. Ideally, most online games would work cross-platform to ensure the biggest possible player count. I've been very happy with games enabling PS4/PC cross-play, it's nice to know XB1 will be added to the mix soon.
