Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

Is DeepEnigma trolling?

He makes up some nonsense about cross play requiring azure with absolutely nothing to back up his claims then asks you to prove it doesn't? you're the one that brought up azure being a requirement, how about you prove that's a requirement if you're going to spew that shit out? the onus is on you here to back up your claims, not for others to disprove them.

I don't think he's trolling... Just deeply skeptical of everything MS does, and assumes the worst.

I can't say it's without warrent, given MS' past, but some scenarios IMO are fabricated w/o any indication... This Azure limitation appears to have been pulled out of thin air, as MS has never pressured anyone into using Azure, and they really don't NEED gaming to prop up their cloud business...

This could be big for me with games like Destiny and now The Division.

Hoping a big dev hops on this because that would essentially double (or more) the amount of RL friends i have to play games like this with due to console preference.

Lord that is awesome!
This is so so awesome. Imagine how much longer the shelf life of some of these MP games will be with cross-network play.

Maybe now I'll be able to get into a R6:Siege match without having to worry about muscle atrophy.

Finally, no I can finally play against my friends on PS4 / XBOX with my WiiU. Oh, wait...

But seriously, who thinks Nintendo would agree to that?

Wow! I am so confused by MS right now. Lol. One moment they appear to be building a walled garden the next they are building bridges to other communities.

appear because people are making assumptions before getting actual information. People need to stop reading articles from gaming journalists until they guaranteed incoming 'edit' happens.

Oh hey I agree 100% thats the way it should be. Until we get more info though I'm going with the idea that Azure will be a requirement.

Hope I'm wrong though for sure

But the azure servers are so good man I wouldn't complain. Titanfalls mp, gears Ue, and Halo (in America) all so smooth online I hate being on Ea's or ubi's servers.

Not sure what all the posts saying, Sony should do this, as they have been for a while now. I dont think there would be anything stopping PS4 games from doing this at all.

Awesome move though. Hopefully in FPS's they realize that PC gamers with keyboard and mouse will dominate. Not good for console users.

This isn't a big deal for me as all my friends have a PS4 however this is good for the overall life and expanded competition for a Multiplayer game for games with randoms.

Cross platform play doesn't really do much for me unless there is an easy/convenient way to party up with people from other platforms, which I'm not holding my breathe for, so that I can easily play games with friends/family who have Bones. Aside from that, all it does is expand the userbase with a bunch of people I don't know, which I guess is nice but not really a tangible benefit for me.

Less of a tangible benefit for a console manufacturer like Sony. Which is why they won't be onboard, and if they're, they'll cherry pick which titles get approval, and it'll be niche ones. But if you're going to go down that route (selective cherry picking of titles) the only reason you do so is to have some PR on your side, which at the end of the day is nothing as it will get picked apart by a vocal minority that will call them out on such. So, they'll come out and say NO like they did to EA Access.

Sony is in the business of getting people to buy their consoles, games(w/ royalties) and subscription services and they want people from the other side to be pulled by the gravity of the success of the PS4 to buy the box. Majority this gen have chosen the PS4 so it stands to reason, friends pull friends along in a domino effect type of thing. If this move deters that, there is one reason for saying no. Since they're the market leaders and the gap increases daily - there is absolutely no reason to throw a bone to the other side looking to keep and maintain their subscription service from being slowly but surely consumed by its competitor. Other reasons being bigger third party leverage in the industry etc. We'll see but suits can come up with multiple reasons to say NO I bet. Same reasons MS last gen SAID a big fat no.

However, the Rocket League model is very unoffensive atm. You don't get to add friends on PSN from Xbox Live. You merely play with strangers....no party chat interaction and such. Third parties bypassing that with publisher specific accounts, with in-game friends and custom party lobbies will, unfortunately, bring back the previous rationale into play aka NO.

It's still gonna be limited.

Rocket league for instance has no cross platform chat, text or voice, no console branded cars. Plus who gonna want to play RTS or FPS against PC players?

I cannot imagine this helping much at all with the decision of what console to buy.

It's a start and a move in the right direction.

Looking at this, I see no reason why cross-play between Ps4 and Xb1 couldn't be a reality for this game, and any other game.

This really should end the speculation about Azure requirements as well, I think, considering the RL steam client doesn't use Azure.

I'm a pessimist. Could this be used in any bad way?

Of course it can.

For one, this is Microsoft's program, which means it's their terms and policies. That in of itself may cause problems. Other platforms might not want to join in and I don't blame them.

Second, I know they are going to try to get money cause this is a most wanted feature. Like, c'mon. I honestly think Online Passes may come back in a different form, maybe cross-network passes or something or the sort. Add $20 more dollars to the already ridiculously priced season passes so you can play with your friends no matter what platform you are on.

But again, imma be optimistic about this.

On the other hand, there are truck tons of games, action games, coop shooters, sports games, heck don't forget Minecraft that could benefit massively from this. Focusing purely on the negative isn't fun.

I'm still waiting for the conditions*.

Probably Microsoft will allow cross platform networking on the condition that Xbox gamers get priority in the player pool during matchmaking, or something along the lines.

I don't think there are conditions, and I don't think Microsoft is acting nefariously or with ulterior motives. Microsoft just wants games like Paragon to not skip their platform because of Microsoft's own policies.

WOW this is huge!

I was at MS dev conference last week and this a new company from what I could see. They are so open now by embracing outside technologies and open sourcing MS technologies. Surprised to see so much Android and iOS talk there. Amazing to see how the new leadership has changed it for the better.

Hope Sony jumps on this too. Mr. Hirai tear down these walls.

Whoa. This a set of walls that I didn't see crumbling any time soon, but I guess the stuff happening at the gaming side of Microsoft are have naturally lead toward these type of policy changes.

Can't argue with a bigger MP pool.

Too bad this happened After games like MGO3/Battlefront/Division came out. If Sony agreed to microsofts "Invitation" I could see EA patching Star Wars, and probably Ubisoft doing Division but fat chance on Konami patching. Hahaha
#fuckkonami

As it stands crossplay from PlayStation to PC is rare as you don't see it in big games like The Division, Battlefront or COD. It's definitely more of an Indy thing. Even Street fighter V I think did it cause fighters are more of a niche and needs the extra community to connect. Same with FFXIV, they wanted that game to have every chance it could so I totally expect it on XB1 now.

Hopefully all the big players will play nice and we will see good things from this change.

Ultimately yes MS is doing this so they don't miss out on games such as RL or being late to the party. I'm glad they opened it up as said other platforms.

That said we won't get any info if Sony would do this until at least like E3. They'd have to discuss all the logistics and how to do it first.

Yeah E3 has the potential to he really damn exciting from MS. We are slowly seeing their new vision and it would be cool for them to just come all out and really reveal what the plans are at E3

Yep, E3 is going to be super weird this year, lol. We actually got a good look at their vision at last build but only recently have the implications come to light. Build this year should solidify what they are doing and I imagine a timeline of the end of this year for their first party titles to be fully embracing this vision of a pc/xbox merged library. 3rd parties that want in will start trickling in starting next year and some at end of this year that they have been working with specifically.

E3 will be the first event with Spencer's actions taking form. Should be interesting to say the least.

lol It's not that bad. Ranked takes me usually 2-4 minutes at the most to find a group.

But it's down the devs? So it's basically what Playstation has but now Xbox players might be able to join in. Cool and about time.

The real Wall for me, is that I can't join a group with my friends on PC while playing PS4 ( Rocket league etc). So we can't play in the same Lobby or communicate :(

Yes, which is something people should keep in mind. Sony's allowed cross-platform with PC forever. Now how many games actually took advantage of that? Not very many. I wouldn't expect this to be any different. A few games will, but overwhelmingly they'll still be on a single platform.

Terminology suggestion for thread:

Cross-play: Multiple platforms are able to play with and against eachother in multiplayer servers.
Example: Shuhei searches for a Rocket League match on his PS4 and gets matched into the same server as Gabe, who is playing on Steam.

Cross-party: Players can add friends from, and create parties with, other players from multiple platforms.
Example: Adam, who is playing Destiny on his PS4, sends a party invite to Phil, who is playing on Xbox One.

The gates on cross-play have been thrown open, but a lot of people in the thread are conflating this with cross-party, which is a different beast entirely, and one MS/Sony may stop well short of enabling for a myriad of reasons.
I have to ask with the previous situation and the revelation today does this make any attempt to cross-party easier for yourselves or is this in reality just MS reaching parity with Sony and that if you wanted RL cross-party you would have to provide the infrastructure past PSN/XBL/PC passing you the players.

Im trying to understand if devs will be at all interested now they have exposure to players on these networks to put in place their own network infrastructures to effectively treat this player pool as one entity and provide all the player id/friends list/party/chat/messaging services that traditionally PSN/XBL have provided within their respective player bases.

I can guess the answer, but be nice to see if you think today might mean the future of the above is far more a possibility, purely on the basis that companies like Sony and MS while not embracing it, might not want to choke it to death because of their vested interests.

That can be changed but I am not sure Sony will be happy with that. Or MS for that matter but they seem to have changed - face value at least....we need a handy MS FAQ. Third parties will do cross-party with publisher specific accounts. Whether Sony or MS allow this is another story.
