Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

Microsoft just wants games like Paragon to not skip their platform because of Microsoft's own policies.

Definitely. Paragon, FFXIV and others completely ignore xbox because they demand cross-play for their online systems. They were just going to be more and more games doing this if they didn't change anything.

Basically, MS is updating their policies to try to close the gap and stay relevant, they're not revolutionizing the industry lol. Cross-play between PS and PC has been there for YEARS. The comments saying that "the ball is on Sony's yard now" are silly. PS has had cross-play only with PC because it was the only compatible platform. How many games on both PS4 and Wii U are there? Not many. And the only other platform, Xbox, was out of the question. A PS-PC-XBOX cross-play FFXIV would've existed a while ago if only MS had allowed it earlier.

This could be particularly huge for racing sims. Games like Project Cars and Assetto Corsa always have small player bases(~2000 per day per game[on pc]) but if you can consolidate all platforms into one serverlist, there will always be plenty of people to race against.

Yes, which is something people should keep in mind. Sony's allowed cross-platform with PC forever. Now how many games actually took advantage of that? Not very many. I wouldn't expect this to be any different. A few games will, but overwhelmingly they'll still be on a single platform.

Are you talking about AAA or indie franchises? I assume it would be easier to large publishers like Activision and EA, who have their own servers and plenty of resources, to implement cross-platform play.

I have to ask with the previous situation and the revelation today does this make any attempt to cross-party easier for yourselves or is this in reality just MS reaching parity with Sony and that if you wanted RL cross-party you would have to provide the infrastructure past PSN/XBL/PC passing you the players.

Im trying to understand if devs will be at all interested now they have exposure to players on these networks to put in place their own network infrastructures to effectively treat this player pool as one entity and provide all the player id/party/chat/messaging services that traditionally PSN/XBL have provided within their respective player bases.

I can guess the answer, but be nice to see if you think today might mean the future of the above is far more a possibility, purely on the basis that companies like Sony and MS while not embracing it, might not want to choke it to death because of their vested interests.

I can't comment on what we will or won't do, but I can say it actually makes things more complicated in some ways. With cross-play now a "thing", you may see platform holders actually double down on keeping their "social graph" isolated - PSN can only friend/party with PSN, XBL with XBL, etc.

They get the best of both worlds (from their POV): big multiplayer matchmaking pool, but a strong incentive to stay in their ecosystem for your network of friends.

The most exciting thing about this is the longevity of online titles.

When I boot up Bad Company 2 on PS3 these days, it's very rare to find a full match. This would mostly eliminate that issue in the future.

Awesome news!

I mean they say "including other console and PC networks." What other console networks besides PS and Nintendo could they be talking about?

Wow. Interesting to see what Sony will do. Would be very nice feature for those who have friends with the "rival" console.

it existed back with FFXI. PC, PS2 and 360 all played together. MS closed up after that game and 10 years later seem to be opening up again. strange days

Hmm. I'm cautiously optimistic about all this. In theory, cross-network play is solely a good thing as it indeed would broaden the player pool, extend the life of multiplayer games, and allow people to for instance buy the PC version and play with people they know who only got Xboxes, and/or, potentially, PS4's, and vice versa etc.

But then there's the part where Microsoft is in control. Microsoft's past with PC gaming ain't exactly grand. Plus the questions surrounding UWP policies.

This is exciting though. Big moves being boldly made.

I hope this will make people realize that the Dualshock 4 is simply awful for shooters once a shooter gets cross-play

imo of course

EDIT: I genuinely don't want people to think of this as some fan boyish tirade. I mean no ill will from this post, seriously. Play what you prefer with.

God, what a shit post you got there buddy. Jealous of the great Dual Shock 4 ?

As an owner of the PS4 and Xbox One, i can safely say that both controllers are exactly the same for shooters, it all depends on what you prefer ergonomicaly.

Wow. Interesting to see what Sony will do. Would be very nice feature for those who have friends with the "rival" console.

I'd expect they would play nice on certain games to garner the goodwill, but still fuck MS over with exclusive deals for content and such to get people to play the PS4 version over the Xbone version.

"Your move sony"

Umm... You already know Sony already allowed this right? Smh

Unless you're talking about XBL x PSN, then yes. Please allow the crossover to happen Sony!

You people are delusional if y'all think you'll be able to play games like COD or Battlefield cross play. Also PlayStation had this since forever, so I'm not really fathoming the "It's your turn Sony" or "I doubt Sony will allow this" comments.

lol at people saying DS4 is shit...what is wrong with these people? Deformed hands? It's perfect. I can switch between either console with ease with zero issue.

Because they stood in the way of cross platform play with DCUO, FF14, SFV, and Rocket League?

I think it's a different story when it comes to a console competitor. As the market leader, Sony only really have console sales to lose by allowing cross platform play with Xbox. At the moment, the PS4's high console sales leads to a higher potential playerbase for most games. So if you want to have the best chance of playing with a large number of people, you should choose PlayStation. With a common pool, that's one less reason to own a PS4 over an Xbox One.

The same people who have brain meltdowns when switching to async-stick positions or concave v. convex analog sticks last gen.

Their attachment to a specific console has made their brain unable to function in normal situations.

You are confusing cross platform play with cross party. You still can't party up with your friends on another platform in a game like Rocket League, even with this change.

This change isn't costing anyone console sales.

Edit: Sorry I read your post wrong. I still don't think many people outside of the extremely hardcore audience take player pool for games into consideration when buying a system. They buy the one that's cheap, has the games they want, and what their friends own

The trouble for me i only play multiplayer on XB1 as their is no challenge on PS4.
HaHa only joking but the banter and competition would be great :-)

It's ridiculous....sounds like an excuse to justify preferring xbox or something. Liking it more , sure, but saying i's trash, unplayable is laughably silly. I don't know a single person in real life who doesn;t like the DS4.

How would they force that once theyve passed the player over to you for matchmaking etc? Sounds quite nefarious that a possible lock down could happen - I didnt contemplate that.

TBH Im gonna down the line of thinking that the big publishers who already have some external service (Origin, Uplay etc) could expand these across their games so it allows cross party as a standard feature. I can imagine for smaller devs something like this just isnt really financially possible, indeed probably reckless and out of scope.

Thanks for the reply all the same - looking forward to see what other devs say about todays news. Probably means more hassle and higher expectations from their customers short term...

No, I'm not. A higher player base theoretically means a multiplayer base will have a longer tail because people are more likely to form and stay in a community.

What do you mean they've been doing this for years already, people need to chill the fuck out till we get full details as people are running wild with their expectations.

Expectations:

Every game moving forward has cross platform play between all 3 systems where people can play with their pals on another device in joyous harmony singing kumbaya

Reality:

A select few titles have larger matchmaking pools and people still buy the game on and play with the system their friends are on.

I think some people are getting ahead of themselves
