People are making too big a deal about this, keep expectations in check. Disappointment is going to ensue.
Microsoft didn't crossplatform play on the 360 too. What do you mean they've been doing this for years already, people need to chill the fuck out till we get full details as people are running wild with their expectations.
Were thrilled to confirm that Psyonixs Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.
Open invite could also come with about a million stipulations we don't know the full details yet, in theory it sounds good but let's wait before we start celebrating a one network future just yet.Microsoft didn't crossplatform play on the 360 too.
What's getting people excited is the possibility of psn vs xbl games on future titles like destiny 2, cod or popular multiplatform title X. It isn't entirely unfounded either.
Open invite to other networks sure sounds like "hey Sony let's sort this shit out and get some games going"
Wow, this is an incredible change. I'm really liking this new direction for Microsoft.
Hopefully this means Rocket League is one of the first to support it!
Why wasn't this done for The Division? Seriously?
Given Nintendo's bread and butter are their exclusives, there's honestly very little negative repercussions for allowing it. Should NX bomb too this will allow any multiplat MP games to still have a decent userbase size, and thus not be unappealing. Finally, no I can finally play against my friends on PS4 / XBOX with my WiiU. Oh, wait...
But seriously, who thinks Nintendo would agree to that?

lol at people saying DS4 is shit...what is wrong with these people? Deformed hands? It's perfect. I can switch between either console with ease with zero issue.
The same people who have brain meltdowns when switching to async-stick positions or concave v. convex analog sticks last gen.
Their attachment to a specific console has made their brain unable to function in normal situations.
I assume this can be easily patched in for already released games?
Expectations:
Every game moving forward has cross platform play between all 3 systems where people can play with their pals on another device in joyous harmony singing kumbaya
Reality:
A select few titles have larger matchmaking pools and people still buy the game on and play with the system their friends are on.
I think some people are getting ahead of themselves
I can't take posters like this seriously on GAF anymore if they post that kind of crap. It's hyperbole to the max and freakin annoying, it doesn't bring anything interesting to any discussion. The Dual Shock is an amazing controller.
It's always the same fanboys posting the same shit. It's either "i can't play any online-heavy game on PS4 because PSN sucks, Xbox Live is the best #$%#? bla bla bla" or "i can't play shooters with the Dual Shock 4 as it's the worst controller evah, it's terrible...bla bla bla".
I mean please, i'm not even sure these people own both consoles and say stuff like that with a straight face.
Literally in the OP.
So I think that PS4 -> PC -> Xbox multiplayer will work the same way that Rocket League works now on PS4: By matching us with random players in either platform.
Given Nintendo's bread and butter are their exclusives, there's honestly very little negative repercussions for allowing it. Should NX bomb too this will allow any multiplat MP games to still have a decent userbase size, and thus not be unappealing.
Given that players will get the same experience on Xbox Live as on other networks for these games, how is it justified to pay for Gold for these games? (I guess the less trolly way to say this is: With Microsoft putting more eggs in the Windows 10 basket and offering support for this and the reforms in 2013-2014 to remove paid Xbox Live for apps, how will they continue to provide value for Gold subscriptions?)
is this the first piece of unreservedly good news to come out of ms since the beginning of the generation?
It is one step closer to get to ms out of hardware and partnership opportunities with competitors. As long as PSN cost money gold will cost money.
Also, a cross platform buy for EA and Activision. Where you buy digital WITH season pass edition get you access to a single runtime at a time that plays on both. Now even the NX from Nintendo could wet its beak. It gives a virtual weight value to modern shooters with online only components.
Honestly this has the potential to be a market disruption for how we look at consoles. The more I think about it... this is picking a fight with Amazon Web Services at the expense of a traditional console space.
Azure everywhere for AAA games and Sony and Nintendo would have to be complicit to satisfy gamers who want value for their virtual goods. Instead of Sony recommending backspace and or AWS for PSN online services, Azure gets promoted because it can be a one stop shop for everyone.
Unabstructed Azure SDK in PS4 and NX SDK... think of that!
Season passes get the platform discounts instead of the current consumer unfriendly dlc first here first model.
:shakes uncontrollably over mere fantasy speak:
If Sony hops on board for this it could absolutely huge.
Microsoft putting Sony in a tight spot, love this. If Sony declines GamerGAF will have their ass on a stick.
not really understanding these posts. did I dream that PS4/PC crossplay has been a thing for a while now?
if Sony leaves crossplay up to developers now then why would they change their stance? its still up to the developer and it has always been that way.
Are you talking about AAA or indie franchises? I assume it would be easier to large publishers like Activision and EA, who have their own servers and plenty of resources, to implement cross-platform play.

If it's wide spread enough among 3rd party developers, I wonder what the implications are in terms of game sales. I know a lot of multi console owners purchase online centric third party games with their friends in mind, so with that boundary potentially no longer being there - where your friends are ultimately playing Call of Duty, Destiny, etc. is no longer a factor. Although I supposed timed DLC exclusivity might throw a wrench into cross network play.
Please, we need to stop this "Sony better do it now" or whatever post. I think we should just be focusing on the potential positive impact that this can bring across all platforms.
For those wondering, games like Dreii currently allow cross-platform play between PlayStation 4, PS Vita, Wii U, PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. Sounds like Xbox will finally be joining everyone else.

I'm not so sure of that.Oh thank god
I can stop listening to Xbox vs. Playstation arguments at work
seriously I got it on my Xbox one but all my friends got it on ps4 and I seriously don't feel like switching and starting all over. Why wasn't this done for The Division? Seriously?

Yeah..... this will never happen.Could make for a huge E3 annoucment if MS got a Sony guy on stage to announce cross platform play for the new CoD
