Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

What do you mean they've been doing this for years already, people need to chill the fuck out till we get full details as people are running wild with their expectations.
Microsoft didn't crossplatform play on the 360 too.

What's getting people excited is the possibility of psn vs xbl games on future titles like destiny 2, cod or popular multiplatform title X. It isn't entirely unfounded either.

We’re thrilled to confirm that Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.

Open invite to other networks sure sounds like "hey Sony let's sort this shit out and get some games going"

Wow, this is an incredible change. I'm really liking this new direction for Microsoft.

Hopefully this means Rocket League is one of the first to support it!

Open invite could also come with about a million stipulations we don't know the full details yet, in theory it sounds good but let's wait before we start celebrating a one network future just yet.

I suspect this is mainly to match the PS4 when it comes to PC cross play.

I bet they threw in the other consoles thing as a shots fired kind of thing. Now if Sony doesn't play ball, they'll be the bad guy.

Finally, no I can finally play against my friends on PS4 / XBOX with my WiiU. Oh, wait...

But seriously, who thinks Nintendo would agree to that?
Given Nintendo's bread and butter are their exclusives, there's honestly very little negative repercussions for allowing it. Should NX bomb too this will allow any multiplat MP games to still have a decent userbase size, and thus not be unappealing.

YEah it's MS...they could just be playing the PR game and they might have a bunch of restrictions for this. LEt's wait and see.

This is great news. I'm sure Sony will support this as they already support cross play with PC and with their "this is for the players" theme, connecting with Xbox players will only add to that moto. I hope developers have the ability to patch this into older games as I would definitely enjoy expanding the player base in Destiny.

lol at people saying DS4 is shit...what is wrong with these people? Deformed hands? It's perfect. I can switch between either console with ease with zero issue.

The same people who have brain meltdowns when switching to async-stick positions or concave v. convex analog sticks last gen.

Their attachment to a specific console has made their brain unable to function in normal situations.

I can't take posters like this seriously on GAF anymore if they post that kind of crap. It's hyperbole to the max and freakin annoying, it doesn't bring anything interesting to any discussion. The Dual Shock is an amazing controller.

It's always the same fanboys posting the same shit. It's either "i can't play any online-heavy game on PS4 because PSN sucks, Xbox Live is the best #$%#? bla bla bla" or "i can't play shooters with the Dual Shock 4 as it's the worst controller evah, it's terrible...bla bla bla".

I mean please, i'm not even sure these people own both consoles and say stuff like that with a straight face.

Expectations:

Every game moving forward has cross platform play between all 3 systems where people can play with their pals on another device in joyous harmony singing kumbaya

Reality:

A select few titles have larger matchmaking pools and people still buy the game on and play with the system their friends are on.

I think some people are getting ahead of themselves

Na, everyone's well aware of that. Will be interesting to see which games will get that cross-network treatment.

It's console war BS, is what it is.

I wonder if Paragon was a factor in this decision. I know there's not much hype for it on GAF but I'm sure MS didn't like Sony getting an "exclusive" from Epic purely because of network policy.

So I think that PS4 -> PC -> Xbox multiplayer will work the same way that Rocket League works now on PS4: By matching us with random players in either platform.

The solution might be shouldered by the big publishers though for the big name shooters. Think Battlefield, Destiny, CoD which sell gangbusters and benefit from the population staying as high for as long as possible.

And the basic "free" random matchmaking would work quite well with invasion type games like Dark Souls or WatchDogs where people coexist in a world but don't need to pre-coordinate as it's a solo game with MP flavors.

Sony be like, so we can finally play Titanfall together now?

I have no doubt Sony will allow it, if they not already do, that is.

If Nintendo wants to attract 3rd parties (and a lot of gamers playing these games on THEIR platform), it's their hand which is forced right now.

Given that players will get the same experience on Xbox Live as on other networks for these games, how is it justified to pay for Gold for these games? (I guess the less trolly way to say this is: With Microsoft putting more eggs in the Windows 10 basket and offering support for this and the reforms in 2013-2014 to remove paid Xbox Live for apps, how will they continue to provide value for Gold subscriptions?)

It is one step closer to get to ms out of hardware and partnership opportunities with competitors. As long as PSN cost money gold will cost money.

Also, a cross platform buy for EA and Activision. Where you buy digital WITH season pass edition get you access to a single runtime at a time that plays on both. Now even the NX from Nintendo could wet its beak. It gives a virtual weight value to modern shooters with online only components.

Honestly this has the potential to be a market disruption for how we look at consoles. The more I think about it... this is picking a fight with Amazon Web Services at the expense of a traditional console space.

Azure everywhere for AAA games and Sony and Nintendo would have to be complicit to satisfy gamers who want value for their virtual goods. Instead of Sony recommending rackspace and or AWS for PSN online services, Azure gets promoted because it can be a one stop shop for everyone.

Unabstructed Azure SDK in PS4 and NX SDK... think of that!

Season passes get the platform discounts instead of the current consumer unfriendly dlc first here first model.

:shakes uncontrollably over mere fantasy speak:

is this the first piece of unreservedly good news to come out of ms since the beginning of the generation?

I think B/C with 360 games was good news too.

Someone said it earlier, and I agree. Losing the console race so far to Sony has made MS more bold. Dropping Kinect like they did, B/C, this...

Gotta give them credit for still putting up a fight.

I'm not sure why people are unsure Sony wouldn't be on-board with this. From all the comments we've gotten from devs over the years, it's always been specific that Microsoft was the one to block/shoot down the idea of cross play with the PC/PS3/4. Like, devs calling out MS specifically instead of making allusions that both console makers weren't fond of the idea makes me believe that Sony would be fine with allowing Live players to play against PSN players. The fact that they've been open to connecting to other networks for years now also makes it easier to believe they'll be up for it.

I've also read that there are certain games that allow cross-network play between PSN/Wii U though I'm not sure how accurate that is given I don't have any experience with games that do that.

If it's wide spread enough among 3rd party developers, I wonder what the implications are in terms of game sales. I know a lot of multi console owners purchase online centric third party games with their friends in mind, so with that boundary potentially no longer being there - where your friends are ultimately playing Call of Duty, Destiny, etc. is no longer a factor. Although I supposed timed DLC exclusivity might throw a wrench into cross network play.

MS isn't getting out of hardware, and this in no way leverages Azure.

Azure can already be used for any game on any platform and it isn't a requirement for cross-network MP.

If Sony hops on board for this it could absolutely huge.

Microsoft putting Sony in a tight spot, love this. If Sony declines GamerGAF will have their ass on a stick.

not really understanding these posts. did I dream that PS4/PC crossplay has been a thing for a while now?

if Sony leaves crossplay up to developers now then why would they change their stance? its still up to the developer and it has always been that way.

You're not since they've never had PS4/XB1 cross play or ever talked about it or hinted towards it.

Are you talking about AAA or indie franchises? I assume it would be easier to large publishers like Activision and EA, who have their own servers and plenty of resources, to implement cross-platform play.

To be honest, i'd expect far more indie games to support this than AAA titles. As I mentioned, despite Sony having cross-platform enabled for years there are only a few games that actually use it. So i'm not expecting to suddenly see CoD and Battlefield support this.

Please, we need to stop this "Sony better do it now" or whatever post. I think we should just be focusing on the potential positive impact that this can bring across all platforms.

Where your friends are playing will still be a factor because of OS features like party chat, invites, and friend lists.

We need this in the OP so we can stop with 'it's sony's move posts'

For those wondering, games like Dreii currently allow cross-platform play between PlayStation 4, PS Vita, Wii U, PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. Sounds like Xbox will finally be joining everyone else.

It's not just the one game either:

- Pure Chess; Wii U, 3DS, iOS, Android and PS
- Cubemen 2; Wii U, Linux, Mac OS, PC and iOS.

If Sony doesn't allow it then it's simply XB1/PC crossplay which is good news but not as exciting. What's the issue?

Damn. This could be a huge moment for gaming in general. We'll see how it plays out, but I honestly never expected Microsoft to take any steps in this direction. Good on them.

Good move by MS. People buy consoles because their friends have that console, which means PS4 has huge momentum from that alone. This is a way for MS to make that edge irrelevant.
