Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

Starting to miss all of the games from last gen that I may just pick up a last gen system just to play them again.

XB1 BC looks like it has really slowed down :(

That's what I did. Wanted to play Ninja Gaiden II and who knows when they'd decide to make that compatible, if they even do in the first place.

Well for everyone that's waiting for Dark Souls, at least it's just a month away to DS3, which will be when MS decides to finally drop DS's.

That surely makes everyone feel better, right? =\

Given up on dark souls arriving and started watching ENBs After Dark play through. Amazing series. He goes into so much detail about everything he comes across. Definitely a good way to fill the DS void I have right now

I preordered Doom from Best Buy after watching the multiplayer trailer.

Are there BC codes for Doom I and II with the preorder?

I believe that is only if you preorder the digital version thru the console.

Well their BC plan is starting to work on me, since because of the 360 marketplace on Xone I bought Earthworm Jim HD yesterday, and enjoyed it a lot. I remember not being entirely convinced by the demo at the time (and I still think there's something "off" with the updated graphics), but the user-recorded videos did help a lot. I just watched a few ones that made me laugh, and I decided "ok I'm in".
Although the video clips had the opposite effects for Tron Evolution (or 2.0 or whatever, the one that is BC), I was considering its purchase but I didn't see anything very thrilling in the captures (except for the cool "jump forward and have a light cycle appear around you).

So sexy...

Tron Evolution isn't a great game.

Does anyone know if the BC games available are region locked on the Xbox One Store?

I remember reading some article by... I think it was the x360 achievement guys, and the big point of it was that Xbox 360 games via Backward compatibility was region free. I'll have to dig up the article, and I'm not sure how that would work, either... Maybe they changed their region or something.

Oh, I guess it's not a store thing, just using BC enabled imported discs.

I think that it has to do with the fact that you aren't running the disc per se, but instead a downloaded package that IS region free. It would be great to have a source for that!

Converting an Xbox 360 disc game to a GoD (what the BC emulator uses) doesn't change the region of the game (if it was set) but in this case, it doesn't matter.

The region of an Xbox 360 console is merely a configuration file in a section of the flash memory. If the allowed game regions and the console regions match, the game boots. If not, it fails.

With BC though, the region of the game disc doesn't matter, because you are only ever running one game on an emulated console. So when packaging the game image up, the emulated console just has to have a matching region.

Because the entire package is an Xbox One app though, the overall package is region free. That's why it doesn't matter what your Xbox One is set to.

Weren't they promising over 100+ titles? Somehow if that's the case, they picked 96 I don't own.

There have been over 100 titles available since launch.

Just counting digital titles (and ignoring all physical discs and the Rare Replay games), my XBO currently has more than 60 BC titles available to play.

BC is going to be much more attractive if you had a large digital library last gen. If you stayed almost 100% physical, it won't seem as impressive.

Is the 360 store on Bone live for everyone now, or is it Preview members only still? I'm hoping that they've just been holding off releasing more games until that's up.

Does anyone else not see an actual price for 360 games on XBO? I've been scared to "buy" Supreme Commander 2 cause it actually doesn't say "free" lol.

The article I read just linked to this... this thing from the xbox achievements website. I still don't really fully understand it. His big deal about it is for getting achievements in the same game from different regions using different discs from other regions.

So I guess when you download the game when putting in a different region's game disc in it'll grab that region's digital version of the game. I mean, it has to, right since they have different sets of achievements?. I don't have any BC-ready imported games so I haven't done any of this myself. I imagine if you'd want to get a different region game from the Xbox store you'd have to change your console's region or whatever it is the cool kids do nowadays, but I've never done this myself either.

Well, there it is. So it's safe to asume that every game that is added to BC will be "region free" as long as it's added to the store your Xbox One is set.

Good to know

I wish I hadn't missed the Mirror's Edge sale price a month ago.

Anyway, as of right now, BC isn't as big as I thought it would be several months in.

I'm hoping that as they improve the emulator, more titles will "just work" and we'll see a faster release rate. But yeah, at this moment it feels like there isn't a whole lot of activity on the BC front. Adding a store section is a good sign though

It won't say free. If you've already bought the game you don't go through the store to get it. You should go to 'My games & apps' > 'Games' > scroll all the way right and it should be under 'Ready to install'. If you own the game and it is installed it will say 'Play' in the store.

Yeah that's pretty much it. Red Dead is the glaring obvious one.
Uh no? Where are all the other Rockstar games that have no near future sequels? Why would Bully Scholarship Edition be held back unless this were Rockstar holding out completely?

So, have they actually announced and/or released any new BC games in march? We're halfway through the month and it seems like the BC announcements are just not happening

No announcements have been made since Carcassonne was released three weeks ago. Over the past month, only three games have been made backward compatible.

I'm using Wikipedia as a source, so hopefully this is a mostly accurate list of all releases so far:

Nov 12: 102 games (initial BC release)
Nov 16: Dungeons Siege III (gwg)

Dec 16: Sacred 3 (gwg)
Dec 17: 16 games (monthly update)

Jan 12: 10 games (monthly update)

Feb 11; 4 games (AWAN, LEGO Batman, Sam & Max, Trials HD)
Feb 15: Galaga
Feb 25: Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved
Feb 26: Carcassonne

No hope for any multi-disc games, huh?

I wouldn't say "no hope". It is an area they have mentioned they would like to get working but there are technical hurdles to overcome.

"No hope" would be expecting original 360 Kinect-only games to come to the program. They've said multiple times that it's not happening.

OK some of the GwG titles are missing.

For instance "Sacred Citadel" for Feb. 1st.

But still only 9 games total for February and until now 1 for March (Surpreme Commander 2 from GwG)

There have only been 2 games on GWG that weren't BC before the were on offer for free. Dungeon Siege III and Sacred 3.

Deus Ex Human Revolition was in the Dec 17 batch

The rest were part of the initial batch on Nov 12:
DiRT 3
Castlestorm
Operation Flashpoint
DiRT Showdown
Sacred Citadel
Gears of War 2
Supreme Commander 2
Borderlands

It appears that MS is mostly picking GWG titles from the pool of already BC games. I mean, I don't really want them to hold back the BC until a game is on GWG, because that would mean people that already own it have to wait. But it also means GWG titles aren't likely to be something that's not already BC.

Every goddamn time I see this thread on front page I let myself blindly hope that Halo Wars or RDR is ready 😭

Also praying that Oblivion, New Vegas, MW2, and Dead Space get it too.

I'm buying Dead Space when it goes on sale again or when it becomes BC, whichever happens first. I'd like to pay less for it, but it it becomes BC I'm not waiting. Love that game so much, and I'll do another playthrough as soon as I can do it on my XB1.

I bought in on Games on Demand for 360 a long time ago... I don't think they ever added Dead Space 2 to GoD :/

The first 2 games are AMAZING!!!

If my Sort by Recently Updated list is correct, looks like a few BC games recently got updates including American Nightmare, Sonic 2 & CD, NBA Jam, Banjoe Tooie, Sacred Cotadel, Plants vs Zombies, Prince of Persia, Witcher 2, and Perfect Dark. Too bad we can't see version numbers to confirm or the little dot we used to get for updated titles.

Also made a slow-mo video of Sonic 2 with controller and timer in view to test what this perceived input lag really is. May play around to see if I can get to make a video with actual milisecond read outs.

Side note: why is Pneuma always at the front of that recently updated list?

There was a bug in the Oct 2015 emulator that prevented games using that build from connecting to Xbox Live. All games that were packaged with that version should have gotten an update to a newer version of the emulator.

You can check version numbers on an installed app by holding both analog triggers and then pressing the button with the two little squares on it.
