Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

No, Rigby went on and on about how the launch ps4 will support 4k bluray. Does not appear that is the case.

Correct, his findings were substantial with evidence that the tech and licenses they were going with, that it would eventually happen.

Just appears to be happening in a 'slim' revision or an 'all in one/VR' box revision if any of this come to fruition.

Please not after FFXV :(

Oh, and if it's made for 4K, but I only have a 720p (766p), can I reduce the native resolution while gaming and boost the FPS that way?

WTF ?

I just woke up, got out of bed and I have a mild headache. slowly sipping on some coffee, refresh the NeoGAF tab, and see this thread.

I call bullshit.

Now I need 2 new PS4s to replace my own, and my sons, but we already both need new controllers. So Sony, by making the worst piece of crap controller ever in the history of video games, makes buying a new set of consoles slightly more palatable to me, because I'm subtracting off $120 in my head already by them 'saving' me from having to buy new controllers. I'm crazy.

end of the year

Better sell my PS4 today before this rumor tanks the resell price
Nothing is coming out that I want to play in the coming months so I guess I will decide if I want a PS4+ or use the PS4 money for a NX
This is exciting

Honestly, this could be an awesome way to upgrade hardware without having to do it every 7 years. kind of like the iPhone model but just every 2 or 3 years instead of every year.

Jeff_Rigby redeamed?

No, because he was positive that they were using custom HDMI chips that would have 4k output unlocked via firmware updates. A whole new hardware revision just for 4k output would invalidate that.

Anyways, yeah, end of 2016? Likely just a hardware revision and not a real upgrade. The sky is probably not falling. If it also has a real SATA3 chip in it I'll consider upgrading, if not, who cares.

Seems like something definitely happening. Might want to put more coffee on.

Damn I'm not sure how I feel about this. I mean I like more powerful hardware but I also wanted to pick up a PSVR this winter. If this new version of the PS4 comes out I may just give my old model to my parents to use for PS Vue and get the new version and wait on VR. Just don't have the money to throw around for stuff like this.

I'll wait and see, don't want to freak out if its something like a 4K capable PS4.

What I'm thinking with these upgrade units is that while the PS4 and PS4.5 are out, devs make games with the PS4 in mind, and the 4.5 owners get those games at higher resolutions and framerates. As the years go on, devs start focusing game development on the 4.5, and leaving behind the 4 owners. Sorta like how devs act when transitioning to a new hardware gen.

As this is happening, with exclusive experiences being made on the PS4.5, Sony releases the PS5, having the PS4 made obsolete, and those users migrate to the PS5. PS5 would run PS4.5 games better, and would have exclusive games by Sony/AAA to encourage users to upgrade to the PS5. PS4.5 users don't need to upgrade just yet as they know a PS5.5 will come out and they are getting most of the games the PS5 is getting, just running worse.

It'll turn into a cycle of X > X.5 > X2 > X2.5, with X being made irrelevant once X2 is out, and X1.5 being made obsolete once X2.5 is out. Still the same "cycle" of when to upgrade hardware, but now with a mid gen upgrade that you can jump into if you so choose.

Or they just aim for the base model like what happens every gen and every time someone acts on this idea.

I sold mine to Amazon for a $250 Gift Card two months ago.

I suspect they'll only be taking them for under $200 now.

This is strange.

An upgraded PS4 where they keep the same CPU. If they are going to upgrade, they should atleast beef the CPU as well. If it's going to be a worthy reason to get a new PS4.

Anyway, I hope developers are making their games scalable so that they can be played on both versions of PS4, and the '4.5' would just be like playing with better settings or in 4k.

Very reasonable and sensible from Sony. There's no point in clinging to the old model from the 80s when everybody else in the tech industry moved on to the model of continuous, iterative releases.

Goddamit! I knew it. This PSVR gimmick, unable to smooth out games with the old PS4, is delaying the next Gran Turismo big time. This is the reason why PoDi is silent again. GT SPORT beta won't launch any time soon. Shit!

It's not even 9pm but I'm too tired to process this all.

Am I right in thinking the summary would be potential hardware revision at the end of the year for 4K and improved VR? No mention of if it's an add-on or entire replacement.

Interesting.

I agree that Sony should address this matter as it's clearly affecting confidence in them. Personally I'd probably go on for it but I won't pretend I'm not a sucker for the tech market.

I'm thinking this is could be a marginally better ps4 slim that has vr capabilities inside. The 4K mention might just be that now smaller games can output in 4K and not talking about AAA games.

I really hope this isn't true. I can't justify annually buying new hardware every year.

If this does come to fruition I'll actually consider getting into PC gaming. Because there is no way in hell any of the Big 3 are getting me to buy a slightly better piece of hardware I already own.

Hmm... if it a revision like the updated PS2 for progressive scan DVD playback then whatever but if it is new hardware that also enhances games Im done with consoles and Ill just move completely to PC and upgrade as needed.

We got a verified insider saying end of the year. It's real and this year just got even more interesting. Between VR and Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony all possibly launching new hardware this year, it's going to be amazing.

Am generally against this, both for the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. Certainly if either console starts to resemble the iPhone model, with small incremental upgrades, I'd be really disappointed. I own all three current gen consoles, but there's a limit to what I'm willing to pay for and how frequently I'm willing to pay for it.

If the gap in the hardware is big enough and the period of time between the upgrades is long enough, then I could accept it, but it has to outweight the general benefit of having one static development platform. This year feels far, far too soon for anything major, and if it's not major, what's the point?

The PS4 .....U. Get it?

Wii have a PlayStation 4 you?

No, I'll just see myself out then.

In all seriousness though this could mean great things for PSVR.

Exactly what I've been expecting to hear. This is the general trend moving forward with consoles. The traditional way of handling consoles is over and not sustainable anymore.

My guess this performance increase will benefit their VR stuff the most, and most of those external parts for VR will become internal.

Who said every year? PS4 will be at least 4 years old by the time an upgrade releases.

Hopefully it's just a Sega 32x thing that sits on top of my PS4 and adds an eight core i7 and 980ti lololol

Not gonna lie I am not interested in the 4k hype but better frame rate and fidelity in 1080p would be nice.

This would also help VR games from looking like Wii launch titles at high frame rates.
