ANd blizzard are kings of optimization. How do you think someone like treyarch, evolution, or how about CD Project red who had a hell of a time performance wise, try and get Witcher 3 to work on all 4 configs, meaning xbox vanilla, PS4 vanilla, xbox enhanced, ps4 enhanced.

How much more work, time do you think is needs? How will maybe the different configs react with their game, if the gpu does something different memory wise, will that add more work to utilize it?

No one knows, but what I do know is there's a reason outside of just sales third party's did not want to develop on wii u. Different config.

Even though this enhanced PS4/XBOX will be same architecture might be same cpu but different gpu or vice versa or both, it's will add to work flow.

Good god man, it's all coding to industry-standard APIs with a side of additional QA. How your game runs is dictated by time and money spent the majority of the time.

Yeah, if this releases in 2016 there's no way it's an actual true hardware revision that would split the user base. Timing makes no sense and there's no way they would be able to make an affordable console with true 4K capacity with modern games.

That scenario would be okay, if the ps4.5 reads the ps4 game code/disc and basically runs it at a higher performance then it'd be fine. But if it needs to be specifically ported to or something, that'd just work against one of the main draws of owning a console if you have a ps4 which is console specific optimization, as the more consoles there are to port too, the less specific optimizations there are made.

I'd imagine that many games would need to be patched to remove any framerate caps or whatever in order for that to happen. By default most game would probably run exactly the same as they do today (just with less performance dips). A new hi-spec mode would need to be patched in for stuff like increased AA or 60fps (unless the framerate was uncapped already).

Yea, I agree. It's probably for branding and marketing purposes. PS4k, makes sense to people. " Oh it's just a PS4 for a higher resolution."

PS4.5 is kinda ungainly, and less obvious what the point of it is.

Sony would not allow this. Games will be made for the original PS4, with resolution, frame-rate and/or some graphics settings turned up on the new model.

Even NX. It's all moving this way. Your older platform or model, will still work, like an older phone, but it just might not run everything in the best possible manner.

Since the real cash cow is in the subscription services, and for other reasons, it always seemed like they would do this. Would Sony really let all those tens of millions of PS+ subscribers a chance to move to MS? Nah, if you keep their library viable on the next platform, no one is going to switch over and throw all those games away.

I think, graphically we are reaching a point of diminishing returns that allows this to be possible, also.

This. I think it's going this way and as long as PS4 titles all work on the newer machine and newer titles stil work on original PS4 models, it's fine. Curious about price and release details. No way it will release this year when PSVR is, end of next year maybe. At which point Sony have a problem as anyone who knows about this being a reality is going to just wait and PS4 sales could slow down dramatically..

I think people take this 4K label too seriously, most games would probably run at 60 fps and on high/ultra settings, only few will be 4K, maybe some indies or first gen PS4 games (cross gen) through patches.

4K will be more like a marketing thing than anything substantial, just like with how Sony said the PS3 supports 1080P, they tried to present it as a 1080P machine back than.

Three years ago. It'll be three years ago by this fall. You'll have had three years value from your purchase and can continue to enjoy it for probably another three years. Or you can choose to get a more powerful one.

Choose. Not forced to. Why would you want to forcibly restrict choice from people just because you bought something a few years ago? Do you think people shouldn't be allowed IPhone 6s because you brought an iPhone 5?

Ah. That's a good question. I think we might see something at E3 but not because of this news. I think they might have a hardware revision in response to Playstation VR by having Oculus support. Note that I'm saying I think which means I'm pulling all of this out of my butt.

Easily my favourite logic here at GAF. Remasters (MCC), driving games (Forza) and average to terrible games (Ryse, Sunset) only count when they are on Xbox. Am I playing this right? Infamous, Driveclub, The Order... these just don't exist at all. And yes, as long as people keep bringing up Ryse you can add Order to the list.

I have no problem if someone doesn't like the games a certain console manufacturer is putting out there, but the "PS has no gamez" song and dance has been going on for like two generations in a row. Give it a rest.

Personally if console manufacturers start shortening console cycles and update the machines every few years, I'm out. Then I'll just get a beefier PC. I might miss some Playstation games or new franchises that won't come out on PC, but that's about it. I'll manage. Outside of GTA which only comes out every 5 years or so these days, I don't care one bit about franchises that have been beaten to death. Looking at you COD, Gears, Halo, God of War and all the other usual suspects. That even applies to Nintendo in my case.

It's not sony's fault you can't handle other people having a superior version. There is nothing negative for you otherwise.

Do you understand how sega's hardware worked? The had similar chips which is why 32X, sega CD could all be add on's to the genesis. On the sega saturn they did what Nintendo did and had a 8mb upgrade expansion that made some games run better, faster. It was only available in Japan. But people who had it could play games in much better conditions. And those games without on the same console played worse.

Not saying it's the same situation but it's similar and one that can depending on the config, developer and engine can cause discrepancy issues.
 
Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with consoles coming out with newer hardware every few years as long as the older models don't get left behind in the process. Such as both the GBA and the GBASP co-existing.

This allows for people to opt in for a cheaper model if they cannot afford the newest one and still be able to play the same games on either system, with the possibility of the newest one having slightly better performance or resolution, or at the very least more memory space.

Isn't this basically like how there was a 360 and PS3 slim? But now the hardware is actually improved. How many folks eventually ended up getting those slim versions?

I suppose this might be nitpicking a bit, but the PS4 and Xbone probably aren't particularly more similar to each other from an OS perspective than they are to the Wii U. Each runs a substantially different OS (PS4 is BSD based, Xbone is Windows based, and Wii U's OS appears to have been made entirely in-house by Nintendo), and will require platform specific code.
 
So here's the scenario. Sony releases the first batch of PSVR games. Unfortunately they don't run greatly and introduce motion sickness. People are in despair and hate Sony for that. Then Sony comes to the rescue by introducing the PS 4,5. With it,PSVR games will run perfectly. In the end, Sony is the hero once again and everyone love them all over again.
