Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

I am baffled that so many people in here seem to think Sony is going to abandon the 40 million PS4 owners, give them the finger, and shift focus so quickly away from one of the most successful products they have ever launched and literally one of the only highlights of the company, profit wise, over the last few years. Makes no sense that they would do this. So much doom and gloom.

A ps4.5, executed correctly, would be great for everyone.

Its more about not trusting 3rd parties to make games that still perform adequately on vanilla PS4 rather the the platform holder I'd say.

So here's the scenario. Sony releases the first batch of PSVR games. Unfortunately they don't run greatly and introduce motion sickness. People are in despair and hate Sony for that. Then Sony comes to the rescue by introducing the PS 4,5. With it,PSVR games will run perfectly. In the end, Sony is the hero once again and everyone love them all over again.

I don't think people are that stupid.

Good god man, it's all coding to industry-standard APIs with a side of additional QA. How your game runs is dictated by time and money spent the majority of the time.

Say that to the Just cause 3 team, or CD Project Red team.

I would love to hear their response from your post.

Sony truly cares about the consumer.

I'm just pointing to the fact that there's no evidence developers will opt for 60fps over making their games look even better if given the option

Oh no doubt, you would see a variety of choices. That said the games I'm assuming would still be required to run on standard PS4 so you wouldn't want to up the effects too much to where a port would be extremely difficult. I'm willing to bet a lot of devs would target 60fps on PS4.5 with slightly better effects and 30fps on PS4

So Nintendo decided to do some kind of "Apple like" hardware model, then MS changes their strategy, and now Sony jumps on board huh?

Good. because as they stand those consoles are weak as hell.

In terms of PC graphics settings, what level of lets say, AF, AA, AO, DOF, Texture Filtering would get better by. From a medium to high setting? or low to medium setting? Whats something reasonable we can expect?

PS4 games usually have a mix of settings from medium to high, but sometimes even low settings.

An enhanced version would naturally yield more high settings, but it's always different on a game-to-game basis.

This is shaping up to be one of the more interesting E3s in some time. What's MS cooking, PS4.5, NX, more VR games, etc. Could you imagine if MS goes first as per usual and announces a new Xbox (Xbox 1.5?) and then later that day Sony announces PS4.5 that's possibly more powerful and cheaper a la E3 2013? I can't imagine Microsoft letting that happen again though. Really interesting. Also kind of feel bad for Nintendo. NX comes out presumably as powerful as Xbox One and PS4 only for both Sony and Microsoft to announce more powerful consoles that same year. Even the Wii U had at least a year to settle in. Or this could be good for Nintendo since neither Sony nor Microsoft will abandon their current instal bases meaning Nintendo will finally be at some what of a power parity in some time. June needs to hurry up!

We will all buy it and they know it :P

I'm only buying this dang thing if JRPGS take advantage of it the most...

Like... this game.....

I can actually see this for generations to come. Release a new console at the beginning of the generation, release a updated system mid gen to boost sales, even if the console is selling well. Release a new console for the generation and a updated midget and rinse and repeat.

There are no more generations.

Don't buy them then your old consoles will still be supported by the same games.

The problem is people didn't know what they were getting into buying a console in this last 3 years if I had known last year that 4.5 was coming I wouldn't buy PS4 last year. Now I'm left with a gimped product because.

And it's not a first for Sony to do a "soft" upgrade inside the same generation of a device. The PSP from the 2000 model forward doubled the amount of internal memory. The games would run on the PS4VR and on the PS4, the only difference being with better performance and/or better IQ.

YUP!

Which is why console cycles exist. It's anticipation for it when it comes out, and it's knowing until the new one is announced your console is relevant, and not inferior.

So why the regret? All indications point to all games being playable on PS4 and PS4.5.

INDICATIONS, you said it yourself. You think smaller studios for indie games, or small budget tier games want more work? You think that, they won't have to maybe take advantage of it if it's in some kind of contract with XBox or sony that they have to if they released a newer console that has advantages.

That means the config they were working really hard to nail for best gameplay/performance and what not will have to be rewritten for another config.

I'm excited to see what happens here between what Sony does and MS does if these rumors turn out to be true.

I know people hate this news, but I've been looking forward to incremental upgrades for a while - especially when old and new games will work on recent models (iPhone model).

And yes, I know PC's exist - but I like gaming on consoles - just my personal preference.

Not if games start targeting higher resolutions than my old consoles can handle. It'd be playing medium or low games when PS4.5 owners are playing high or ultra.

That would literally be the PC-tiered performance that many in this very thread have decried as going against console convenience. I already have a dope PC. No need to replicate that with 2 consoles.

How many sources do you need before you are satisfied?

Two trustworthy that can give out more detailed informations then something that can be summed up in one sentence. We are talking about a conference for game developers here, you'd think that people who were briefed by Sony about a new project could give out more detailed informations like will developers get access to more memory to help with 4k resolutions. I think that's a very essential question and something a game developer would at least ask.

Also the first sentence of the last paragraph makes me very sceptical. "Plans are always changing, and some of the details we’ve heard are fuzzy..." What details? There were no details in the article to begin with. And why does he publish something unreliable and fuzzy?

And then he ends the sentence with: "one thing has become clear: Sony is exploring the possibility of releasing a more powerful console way before the PlayStation 5".

I think that's common sense for a TV and VR manufacturer. A more powerful PS4 could mean a lot of things like a PS4 model with an integrated co processor for VR (instead of having to plug in an extra box). Or a PS4 with HDMI 2.0 connectors and the ability to natively play UHD Blu Rays (and a co processor that helps with decoding a.k.a. more powerful gpu). Still 4k gaming, I do not believe him one second.

So generations are coming to and end and quick revisions are around the corner, huh? Like all other electronics. Seems very plausible. Millions spend tons on each and every iPhone and Galaxy every year.

Could it just go back to "PlayStation" with a yearly revision recognized by the date? Interesting times.

So why the regret? All indications point to all games being playable on PS4 and PS4.5.

Because I would've just saved my money and waited for this beefier console.

In the future I'll wait until a console is on its last hardware iteration before picking it up.

The problem is people didn't know what they were getting into buying a console in this last 3 years if I had known last year thet 4.5 was coming I wouldn't buy PS4 last year. Now I'm left with a gimped product.

How old is your TV? How old is your phone? How old are the components in your PC? Do you feel that each and every one of them are unsatisfactory?

Thing is, by the time this becomes popular the PS5 should be pretty close correct?

PS 5 can just be another incremental upgrade, they can just release new versions every 3 years or so. As a PC gamer, I'm fine with this, it means games that are less held back by consoles.

Sort of. It's like buying an iPhone 6 and then they come out with the iPhone 6s.

But is that what the console business should be heading towards? Don't get me wrong, it's clear that MS is planning on that, since Phil Spencer spoke about it in February but isn't this year, three years after the consoles launched a new version rather too early?

It's not sony's fault you can't handle other people having a superior version. There is nothing negative for you otherwise.

Well, I tell you. There is.

I can't and won't "upgrade" my PS4, because I have motherfucking P.T. installed, and due to goddamn Konami and ludicrous "depublishing" of software, I can't even get back what I have once I switch the system.

I thought I could do with ONE device per generation, well, I am forced to stay on this device and can't do anything even if I wanted to upgrade.

Bah. Time to go PC/GOG exclusively? I am so damn mad at this whole industry turning more and more to shit.

/leaves thread FOR GOOD
