What is the epitome of bad or generic anime?

I'll be honest I'm not the best at recommending anime movies but I can at least attest to the greatness of Wolf Children and Summer Wars.

I've watched Summer Wars and yeah that was quite enjoyable...

Space Brothers looks interesting, esp since when I was a young lad I liked all the space stuff Gundam/Robotech/Pat Labor/Evangelion/Starblazers (Showing my age) lol anything space/mech related resonates with me.

It's self-insert crud. It's fine to like it, I mean I like Dragon Ball Super and that's so bad, but it's not exactly quality yo.
Self-insert implies that one would identify with the main character with the events pandering to the fantasies of the viewer. That's pretty much why self-insert plots typically revolve around average Joe or Jane. Unless you were or are a loner, you wouldn't identify with Hachiman's place in the world. His personality, world-view and the interactions with everyone are predicated on that aspect.

Just let me make this clear, SPACE BROTHERS is amazing but it takes a really realistic route of a dude in this 30s trying to be an astronaut from literally scratch. So don't expect mechs haha.

I think it destroys so many anime cliches, THE MAIN CHARACTER IS IN HIS GOD DAMN 30s, and he's probably the best MC of all time.

Also, Wolf Children > Summer Wars (both have the same director).

"Unless you were or are a loner". That basically translates to "Japanese otaku".

I mean, a loner with a 'tude being plopped into a club with two typically attractive women all conveniently like that?

Yeah

The amount of Sword Art Online mentions warms my heart.

I'll say I found Deadman Wonderland boring and predictable, to the point of cringe. But its not as bad as SAO, and I know it has a following that I could understand why they like it. But I still think it sucks.

In terms of Anime that has a budget its either Naruto or Dragonball Z. The amount of panning and reusing animations is ridiculous its Anime 101 save money garbage. That Team Gai fight in Shippuden will put you off Anime for years. For Naruto they are even in a holding pattern to milk it as much as possible. Basically restarting the anime in an alternate timeline is insane. For Dragonball the fact that 5 hours could take 40 episodes of standing, screaming and powering up in the original run is ridiculous. After Frieza Dragonball Z falls apart fast.

Bleach the anime was watchable all the way until the Sword Beast Arc (You really just have to skip that arc). The Sub arc and SS arc are anything but generic. The fillers were ok and animation stayed consistent and got great in the fullbringer arc. All the major fights are well done. Fuck every Bleach opening and ending in terms of music and animation is amazing.

If you really want to find a generic anime though its one of those harem fanservice anime involving a hot space cat girl. They follow a blueprint all the way through.

Yeah
Hachiman isn't an otaku by any meaning of the term. He isn't a hikkikomori either.

Yukino is an unlikable character and the art doesn't really differentiate attractiveness amongst the student body. I know what you're getting at, but again, I think you're trying to fit it into an image of your average boy-meets-girl romcom, which it is not.

I also want to know this D:. I love Sword Art Online, the Light Novel at least, I haven't really watched the anime.

SAO Abridged is the best xD

Ao no Exorcists manga is good! And Rosario+Vampire manga is awesome (anime was TERRIBLE o_o).

Good stuff.

I would honestly rather watch Sword Art Online rather than half the shows on real tv

Well, it's much bett Er than the stuff my wife dominates the TV with, that's for sure.

i love sword art online! is it really considered that bad? i liked the whole
aid
s storyline and thought that was very well done

My man, stay strong.

Feels like most of the popular ones I've sampled lately have the same common tropes that I can't separate from "generic". But maybe it's not really it that bothers me. Maybe a lot of the formula has just become predictable, and I'm just sort of looking for something that will finally surprise me.

Try Konosuba. It's a comedy and has some fanservice, but it's a hilarious twist on the "stuck in a game/mmo world" genre.

Steins; Gate as well if you haven't taken the time to watch it yet.

Sword Art Online is a bad suggestion because the first 14 episodes are really entertaining (specially if its your first experience with the "trapped-in-a-game" genre).

I would say if you want to watch something really bad, watch Cross Ange. It has stupid almost insulting fanservice, shocking scenes for the pure sake of shock, the animation is only decent for the first episodes, its still kind of hillarious so you won't just abandon it right away (I think I dropped it by the 12th episode).

But he wants to go to space, that's enough for me lol...

I will check out Wolf children for sure.

Movies I'd recommend (Some are old as dirt so fuck me whatever)

Perfect Blue
Akira
Millennium Actress
Studio Ghibli stuff, obv
Summer Wars (as stated)
Vampire Hunter D/bloodlust
Patlabor: The Movie

Sure there is more, but those come to mind.

I dunno, outside of the fairy arc and that stupid cousin romance stuff, I didn't think SAO was that bad. Seems like it gets all the hate attention just because its popular. Also, I absolutely hated Hack sign. Maybe I'm missing the point but it was extremely boring to watch, and none of the characters were likeable.

Will investigate, tyvm....also movies? much more digestible for me, rather than getting sucked into too many random series at once.

If you're looking for interesting anime movies, here are a few recent ones to investigate:

Blue Exorcist: The Movie
Giovanni's Island
Miss Hokusai
Saint Young Men
Shashinkan (short)
When Marnie Was There

If there was an award for the most overrated show in terms of its hatred, Sword Art Online would win it. Obviously it isn't top-tier stuff, but on the whole its a fairly entertaining action-adventure with about 10 or so bad episodes out of 50 total. I laugh when people try to paint it as the worst of anime, because it's not even close.

Everyone in this thread should run out and watch Haikyu, which had a god-tier episode yesterday

Everything after gun grave of season 2 was falling asleep levels of boring I'd say out of all the episodes half of them are boring as fuck. The show has a solid season of entertaining shit though, issues aside

It basically panders to all the teenagers who think they're different and "above it all". Makes me dislike it even more for that reason.

Angel Beats since everyone already said sword art online.
Rosario+Vampire
Chobits
Also Fairy Tail
Watamote.

Rosario+Vampire is so sad. Cause if you read the manga, you realize they changed EVERYTHING in the anime. The creator must have been fucking horrified at what they did to the series.

Ragnarok Online the Animation

Whatever this shit is. I remember watching this to the last few episodes then stopped near the end when I realized I gave zero fucks about anything that was happening in the show and was wasting my time.

Gundam Seed probably fits, too. It just does things for the sake of doing things. It's dramatic for no reason other than needing to be dramatic. Things explode because soemoen said something should explode here. None of it makes sense but it just happens because those things are supposed to happen at that point in the show.

Fair enough, to each to their own on that regard. I've never had any interaction with people like that in high school to know that feeling.

Is Clannad the one with the absurdly stupid looking people? I know nothing about anime but those horrifyingly deformed faces seem to have stuck with me.

I've heard about Clannad here and there so this post prompted me to look it up on Google and I OHMYGODWHAT'SWRONGWITHYOURFAAAAAAACE?

If AnimeGAF did a vote SAO would win "most hated" by a country mile; it's just that way. With that being said, I completely agree with you, lol. Oh well.

By the way, dunno if anybody else knew about this anime, but it was one episode of Dragonaut the Resonance (recommended to me by a junior high school anime club at the time) that promptly put an end to any intentions of me becoming hardcore heavily involved with anime these past several years

Particularly this image (nsfw)

It was all only casual recommendations, careful research and following established frachises that I already knew after that

It bloody is mate. It's about a moody dude thrust into a situation with two attractive chicks that he's somehow fated to meet because of some incident that happened before they were brought together. It turning dark later doubly makes it so. It fits it to a T. Add in some incidental touches, a tsundere, an innocent girl to be broken, and some female-on-male violence and you're covering most fantasies. I owned the manga and even that shit wasn't good. Like, constant eye-rolling lmao

Clannad (After Story) is an amazing anime if you pay attention and watch it all the way through.

Ruined the emotional ending by shoe-horning in the VN wish mechanic and barely explaining it so if you weren't aware (like myself at the time) it basically seemed like Super Mario 2: The Anime.

Mahou Sensou is the most generic anime I've ever watched, even more so than Sword Art Online.

I avoid bad, generic anime as a rule, but in my time reading the impressions of people who watch bad, generic anime, Mahou Sensou (Magical Warfare) sounds like the most bad, generic anime of the last five years.

There's way more generic and terrible anime then SAO, people only whine about it because it's popular.

Problems with SAO
-Terrible main character
-Wasted female character
-Harem bullshit
-Incest
-Objectification of every female character
-The entire second half

In conclusion this show sucks. The only redeeming factors are its animation and soundtrack and an actually decent dub. Yeah it's popular but other shows are both popular and good. People shit on it because it sucks.

Huh, totally did not get that impression from watching the first season (haven't gotten around to starting the second), but I'll concede if it does turn out to be like that.

Fair enough, to each to their own on that regard. I've never had any interaction with people like that in high school to know that feeling.

I mean it's not a particularly bad characteristic for a main character to have, but it's basically another harem anime except it tries to disguise itself as something more.

You have no idea. I watch a lot of bad generic anime, and Mahou Sensou stands out in my mind as the bad, generic anime. More than Strike the Blood, more than Guilty Crown, more than the Irregular at Magic High School.

I see this topic's quickly devolved into "anime I don't like" and "popular shows that aren't as good as their popularity would indicate" (yeah I agree guys allot of it is bad but the question is for bottom of the barrel). I'm gonna take an actual shot at answering the question. Let me just preface my response with that 10 years ago I watched allot of anime. As in, huge stacks of DVDs I would consume in weeks and subs I would tear through at lightning pace. Of everything I watched, by far the worst and trashiest is the 2004 TV series DearS.

DearS hits a bunch of the notes. Hapless teenage boy who lives by himself inadvertently enters a master-slave relationship with a hot, scantily-dressed, mentally challenged alien chick who he tries to "civilize" to humanity to whacky results because - surprise - their race's culture is based on master-slave relationships. He does have help though: The competent but decidedly less hot daughter of the landlord who puts up with all this because they're childhood friends and it's revealed near the end (concretely!) that she likes him!

The first alien chick apparently wasn't supposed to show up though, and a second hot alien chick (who also happens to be a tsundere) moves in to teach the first one how to be a proper slave, much to our hero's chagrin who just wants to do the noble thing of course and treat her like a human. They all also go to school too where everyone naturally fawns over the hot aliens and nobody gets much learning done because their one teacher is a total nympho who comes to school in lingerie and turns situations that didn't already have sexual misunderstandings into just those.

There's also a bizarre subplot with an alien catgirl (emphasis on the 'cat' part in her behavior) on some kind of mission that's awkwardly shoehorned in and breaks the flow of any episode she appears in because her relation to the main plot isn't adequately explained for... the entire run? I think she ties in to the last episode to help close out a show that's obviously about nothing else except fanservice.

Also, the show looks bad. I don't have a good eye for good or bad art and animation unless they're far on one side of the scale or another. This one's definitely on the bad end.

DearS earns bonus points for super generic openers and closers for that era. I'm pretty sure it's a copycat, probably trying to cash in on Chobits' success. Anyway, the ender has chibified versions of the female aliens doing a little dance to an upbeat track, pretty standard for that type of the show of the time. The opening is super of-that-era and totally shameless, even for the era. A second, high-pitched vocal support timed with the rising background music in a way that's supposed to sound sexual (the image on-screen includes the female lead falling in water towards the other alien chick to a forbidden lesbian kiss, while perioidcally cutting to bubbles containing images of her nude, upper body). Perioidcally there are shots in the opening showing the aliens moving in to the camera as if to kiss the viewer. And the part that gets me the most that I don't think I'll ever forget: The lyrics when the lead alien chick moves in to kiss you are "I'M YOUR SLAVE!" The rest of the opening is just super-generic and totally of the era: Shots of the supporting cast doing their 'thing', a pan of the whole supporting cast staring at the camera (as if to establish some sort of credibility with the audience that this show will be about something other than just whacking off), action sequences distributed in no particular order, a pan of a mysterious, comatose chick in a tube or something I guess. It's got allot of elements of '90s openings but with all the fanservice of the '00s, and this one's dialed up to 10.

... DearS is more bad than anything else though. It's not even bad-good. It's just bad. I could probably find something more generic but it would also be better. DearS is just awful.

Rosario+Vampire is so sad. Cause if you read the manga, you realize they changed EVERYTHING in the anime. The creator must have been fucking horrified at what they did to the series.

The manga is actually pretty decent as well, especially around chapter 20 when the story changes for the better. The anime though was a goddamn travesty! The art style was so cheap compared to the manga and like you said, they botched just about everything and everyone.

A friend of mine and I watched the first two episodes of the Neptunia anime on a lark

I'm going to go with that

I actually think the Neptunia anime is one of the best videogame to anime adaptations that I have seen, and it's certainly not generic.

It is pretty stupid and NOT great at all, but I wouldn't call it generic. It's just whatever.

Maybe it's because I watched Berserk juuust before my teenage edgelord phase, so it lost a lot of appeal to me, but yeah, from what I can remember, it was pretty inane. I wouldn't call it generic, but it was pretty silly. If Warhammer 40k wasn't already the trope namer for "grimdark," then Berserk would be the next best candidate.
